Incident


The suspects are wanted by the Colorado Springs Police Department for felony child abuse. They are facing charges relating to the abuse and burning of the infant son, Emanuel Guzman. Both parents failed to appear in court on 5/21/09 and custody of their son has been transferred to the Department of Human Services. Recent investigative information has determined that both suspects may be attempting to flee with the child to Mexico.

"Police still want all of us to keep an eye out for this little boy and his parents. As of Tuesday evening there is no change, and no new information from authorities. We're keeping it on the home page as a constant reminder that the search continues.
The Colorado Springs Police Department issued an Amber Alert for the 23-month-old boy late last Friday night.

Police believe the boy is with his mom and dad. The family lives near Fountain Blvd. and Chelton Rd.

Police say Emanuel Guzman is in desperate need of a doctor and time is of the essence. "The longer he's away from medical attention, the more risk of infection or illness," said Sgt. Jeffcoat.

An Amber Alert is still open for 23-month-old Emanuel
Guzman who police believe may be on the way to Mexico with his
parents.

Emanuel was being treated for severe hand burns he
received last month and police believe his parents, Benito Guzman, 29, and
Carmen Aguilera, 30, abused the child.

"We believe the parents are responsible for the injuries
and there are active for the parents for felony child abuse charges," said Lt.
David Whitlock, of Colorado Springs Police Department.


Emanuel was under the care of the Department of Human Services
when a magistrate released him to the care of his parents. On Thursday,
his parents were supposed to return to court for a hearing that would
have determined whether Emanuel would have stayed with them or returned
to the Human Services Department. When his parents didn't show up for
court - and when they weren't found - an Amber Alert was sent out for
Emanuel.

"This is a case where we are just concerned that the
parents are not going to be able to provide the medical care he needs," Whitlock
said.

Benito Guzman is 5-foot-8 and weighs 180 pounds, with
black hair and brown eyes. Carmen Aguilera is 5-foot-6 weighs 130 pounds and
has black hair and brown eyes. Police say they may be driving a tan 2004 Ford
pickup with Colorado license plate 491-SKZ, or a brown 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
with Colorado license plate 781-SLH. Police are asking anyone with information
on the case to call 444-7000.
