Why was she contemplating suicide in July and August when they were soooo convinced that Caylee was alive and all the sitings that they were reporting. Could it be that they knew then? We all know the answer to that!

Jose Baez tells WESH how she could get off; George, Cindy tell CBS' 'Early Show' they're behind their daughter -- no matter what

Watch CBS Videos Online

Today is the start of the May sweeps ratings period. News organizations are promoting their reports to bring in viewers, and the Casey Anthony case has become an important lure.

WESH-Channel 2's Bob Kealing will have an interview with Anthony attorney Jose Baez at 11 tonight. Anchor Martha Sugalski said at 11 last night that Baez "makes the case for why Casey could go free.

We'll explore four areas in the case where Baez and other prominent players say reasonable doubt could exist.

We're going to tell your what the key battleground is going to be."

On CBS' "Early Show," Maggie Rodriguez this morning concluded her two-part interview with Casey's parents, George and Cindy Anthony. Rodriguez shared the headline with me yesterday: Cindy had contemplated suicide. The second part had been taped after their appearance on the show yesterday.

This morning, the parents described Casey. George called her sensitive, caring and "the kind of daughter that any father is proud of." She is accused of murdering her daughter, Caylee.

What do they say to people who say the evidence is hard to refute? "Has any case ever gotten all this kind of exposure?" George asked. "No."

The parents said they would support Casey, no matter what. "All we can do is stand behind our daughter," Cindy said.

"There's some people that say we should be done with it," George said. "You can't. That's our daughter. No matter what."

Cindy canceled on Oprah because of integrity . . . (WTH?)

Casey Anthony: Cindy tells WKMG she canceled on Oprah Winfrey because of integrity -- yes, you read that right

posted by halboedeker on Apr 23, 2009 11:58:36 PM

Why did George and Cindy Anthony pass on Oprah Winfrey?

In a text message to WKMG-Channel 6, Cindy said, "BTW I cancelled on Oprah because of integrity."

WKMG's Jessica D'Onofrio said Anthony didn't explain the cryptic message.

Cindy is going to pick a fight with Oprah? Based on honesty?

Who do you think is going to win that one? Duh.

The Winfrey people said they decided not to go forward with an Anthony interview after learning the couple would appear elsewhere. George and Cindy talked to CBS' "Early Show" on Wednesday and Thursday.

So WKMG anchor Mike Garofalo asked which party should be believed: Oprah or Cindy?

"It's really anybody's guess," D'Onofrio said.

Given her track record, Oprah wins my vote. What do you say?

Baez apologizes if he hasn't shown outrage

Casey Anthony case: In WESH interview, Jose Baez apologizes if he hasn't shown outrage that wronged woman is jailed

posted by halboedeker on Apr 25, 2009 10:43:11 AM

Where is the outrage from the defense that the wrong woman has been jailed?

Bob Kealing of WESH-Channel 2 asked that question of Jose Baez, who is representing Casey Anthony in her murder trial.

"I apologize if I haven't shown that previously," Baez said.

"I've pulled out all the stops to try to get her the best defense possible," he added. "That's what I'm mostly concerned with. I have to stay focused. I can't get emotional."

Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee. WESH has heralded its interview with Baez as an exclusive -- the first the attorney has given since the state decided to seek the death penalty. The NBC affiliate aired reports Thursday and Friday -- the first two days of the May sweeps ratings period -- and put other parts of the interview on its Web site.

Kealing asked how Baez will try to explain the smell of decomposition in Anthony's car trunk. Baez countered that the lab has said it could possibly be decomposition -- a "very presumptive result," Baez said. Baez added that the evidence hasn't been submitted in court and that the science behind it isn't
fully accepted.

Did you find the interview worthwhile? Or not?

Casey Anthony case: WESH explores 'ugly coping'

posted by halboedeker on Apr 28, 2009 11:53:12 PM

How to explain Casey Anthony's behavior after her daughter disappeared?

WESH-Channel 2 tonight explored the issue of "ugly coping" -- or a defendant's not grieving in an appropriate way.

The record shows that Anthony partied, lied and waited a month to acknowledge that daughter Caylee was missing. Anthony is charged with Caylee's murder.

In an interview with WESH, Jose Baez, Anthony's attorney, gave an oft-repeated line: "She has a very compelling reason for her actions."

That's all he was saying about his client. But Baez evidently sees a parallel in the case of a military wife who partied, purchased breast implants and slept around after her husband's death. Cynthia Sommer was charged with her husband's murder, but she was freed after two years in jail.

"She lost her emotional compass. She went off the deep end," Sommer's attorney, Allen Bloom, said. "This is not an unusual phenomenon."

WESH reporter Bob Kealing highlighted Baez's citing of the Sommer case as "the first information of any kind in nine months that Baez has offered beyond that pat answer that Caey has a compelling reason for her actions."

Yet a lot of what followed was just speculation.

Kealing recounted Sommer's story and then asked: "Will Jose Baez use Cynthia Sommer, the case he told us about, to help him in the case against Casey? Can this notion of ugly coping be applied to Casey's partying, lying and apparent disinterest over the loss of little Caylee?"

WESH anchor Jim Payne followed that with another question: "By steering you to this case does Baez tip his hand?"

Kealing replied that Baez's spokeswoman said the Sommer connection is "not an accurate representation of the defense strategy."

Kealing added, "We're not saying this is going to be his defense."

Which raises a question: Why was this report shown?

I don't think the information justified the buildup or the airtime lavished on the report. But it's sweeps month, and any Anthony report brings in some viewers.

Jose Baez says 'we'll be surprised' by what happened on the day Caylee's remains were found

Jose Baez says 'we'll be surprised' by what happened on the day Caylee's remains were found

posted by halboedeker on May 5, 2009 6:25:27 PM

The State Attorney's Office released 700 pages of documents to the defense team in the Casey Anthony case.

"[Jose] Baez got an avalanche of new evidence today, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's happy," said WESH-Channel 2's Bob Kealing.

At first glance, Baez said this material wasn't what the defense was seeking, such as Caylee's autopsy report, Kealing reported. Baez said he may ask the judge to intervene. Casey is charged with daughter Caylee's murder.

"They know what we want, they know how long we've been asking for it," Baez said of the prosecution. "There comes a certain point where cooperation ends."

Baez today questioned a corrections officer and a sheriff's detective about Anthony's reaction on Dec. 11 when a child's remains were found near the Anthony home. Those remains were later identified as Caylee. Baez deposed jail Lt. Tammy Unser and Detective Phillip Graves.

WFTV-Channel 9's Kathi Belich said Baez had told her that Anthony "was not treated very well at the jail the day she found out a child's remains were found near her home."

Baez is trying to keep a videotape of Anthony's reaction from being released to the public. "The defense does not want us to see Casey Anthony's meltdown," Belich said.

Another Belich point stood out: "He [Baez] says we'll be surprised when we find out what happened that day, on Dec. 11th." She added. "But he says he doesn't even know the whole story yet."

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer scoffed at Baez's approach: "The only camera Mr. Baez doesn't like that he's met is the camera at the jail."Baez will depose more witnesses next week, including a co-worker of meter reader Roy Kronk, WESH reported.

WKMG-Channel 6's Mike DeForest reported Zenaida Gonzalez's lawyers plan to interview former Anthony pal Annie Downing in several weeks. Gonzalez is suing Casey Anthony for defamation for linking her to Caylee's disappearance. But Anthony's attorney's hope to get Gonzalez's civil lawsuit thrown out, DeForest added.

Casey Anthony: WFTV says it won't retract report that the defense team called 'this fabrication'

posted by halboedeker on May 6, 2009 2:20:58 PM

Casey Anthony's defense team wants a retraction from WFTV-Channel 9.The station says no way.

Jose Baez's spokeswoman said WFTV's Kathi Belich was wrong when she reported this week that Baez "faxed copies of his motion for a
change of venue to some reporters before he ever filed it with the
court."

Baez spokeswoman Marti Mackenzie fired off an e-mail to the station: "Please retract this fabrication that you reported.
Let us know when you plan to retract your report."

"We're not going to retract it," WFTV news director Bob Jordan told me. "Faxed or handed. Makes no difference how it was transmitted. What matters is that it was transmitted to reporters."

Mackenzie said that simply wasn't so and that the motion wasn't provided to any reporter before it was filed.

"Their reports are tainted with the way they like to spin their own story," Mackenzie said today. "Kathi Belich, it appears, came late to a news conference so she could make her own entrance. She hangs back and then tries to grab Jose by herself. So much of this is about theater. These are things that are a trademark of Channel 9, the confrontational interview. "

Mackenzie said WFTV has sent out a message, through all its Anthony reporting, that the station is pro-prosecution. But this particular report -- about the change of venue motion -- was enraging because it was a fabrication, Mackenzie said.

Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.

Even the family's baptisms are controversial

Even the family's baptisms are controversial

posted by halboedeker on Aug 10, 2009 1:36:15 PM

Motions by Casey Anthony's defense team made headlines on noon newscasts today.

WKMG-Channel 6 and WFTV-Channel 9 reported that the defense wants Anthony's check-forgery case delayed until after her murder trial. Anthony is accused of the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.

Both stations reported that the defense wants Tim Miller of Texas Equusearch certified as a material witness.

WKMG also reported that the defense wants these people barred from testifying for the state: Leonard Padilla, Tony Padilla, Tracy McLaughlin and Robert Dick. The defense said those people had an attorney-client relationship with Anthony, anchor Erick Weber said. (Those four people entered into agreements with the defense counsel.) The hearing on the motions will be Aug. 21.

But another Anthony story -- from Sunday -- was stirring heated conversation on the Internet. On what would have been Caylee's 4th birthday, grandparents George and Cindy Anthony were re-baptized, according to people who attended the service.

In a sign of low regard for George and Cindy, some readers questioned the Anthonys' timing and motives in being re-baptized. I read about this development on the WESH-Channel 2 Web site. And I've heard about it from readers who were outraged.

Were the Anthonys upstaging Caylee on what should have been her day? When your baptisms are controversial, you really have an image problem.

Jose Baez says ethics allegations motivate him to fight harder

Jose Baez says ethics allegations motivate him to fight harder for client who says she is not guilty

posted by halboedeker on Sep 1, 2009 6:49:51 PM

After being cleared of several ethics allegations, Casey Anthony's attorney Jose Baez was speaking out on WKMG-Channel 6 tonight. The CBS affiliate scheduled the exclusive interview at 6:30 p.m. to compete with national news on ABC and NBC.

"Jose Baez says he knew he did nothing wrong, so it came as no surprise to him when he received this letter from the Florida Bar clearing him of an ethics complaint," WKMG's Mike DeForest reported.

Baez insisted that he never told former private investigator Dominic Casey to do anything unethical, DeForest said. Baez had no idea why the private eye would make such a charge. Baez was cleared after a four-month review by the Florida Bar.

"It's discouraging to hear your name thrown around like mud, especially when you work so hard," Baez told DeForest. "I know what it's like to be accused of something you haven't done. So what it does is it really motivates me to fight harder."

That feeling evidently has cemented the bond between Baez and his client. Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.

"My client has told me she's not guilty, and I'm working hard and doing everything that I can as her legal counsel to put the state to its burden," Baez said.

Baez had no comment on another ethics allegation that involves his former public-relations spokesman, a convicted felon who used a fake name.
