A play based on the Casey Anthony case will be taking the stage of a playhouse in Australia. Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty on charges that she killed her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee Marie, claiming a babysitter kidnapped her toddler. Caylee was last seen in June of 2008, but she was not reported missing
until a month later. Her remains were found in woods near the family's home in December. “Tot Mom” premiers at the Sydney Theatre Company on December 18. The play, created by Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, says it's based on police reports and transcripts from the Nancy Grace Show.

New proof that the saga of Caylee and Casey Anthony is a worldwide phenomenon: The crime story is becoming a play Down Under.
"Tot Mom," created and directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh, will be staged from Dec. 18 to Jan. 31 by the Sydney Theatre Company.
The company’s Web site says that Soderbergh uses “excerpts from transcripts of Nancy Grace’s show, court documents and police reports” to create the play, which is described as “a compelling drama for our sensation-hungry times.” By taking the material from the public record, a playwright would not have to compensate an author.
Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.
On her HLN show, Grace (pictured) repeatedly has referred to Anthony as “tot mom.” An HLN spokeswoman said that Grace had no comment about the play.Yet Grace is evidently a major character. The company’s Web site says Grace’s “public crusade for justice for little Caylee transformed the case from a tragic story to a 24-hour news spectacle.”
Essie Davis, who acted in Australia and The Matrix Revolutions, will play Grace.
Ticket prices range from $30 to $75.
Soderbergh is one of Hollywood’s most-acclaimed directors. He won the directing Oscar for "Traffic," and his other credits include "sex, lies and videotape," "Erin Brockovich," "The Informant!" and the "Ocean’s Eleven" series.
Last month, Soderbergh talked to the Sentinel about "The Informant!" in which Matt Damon plays a corporate whistle-blower who often bends the truth.
“I’m fascinated by lying,” Soderbergh said. “If you walk around all day every day, telling the truth about every situation you encountered, to everyone you encountered, someone will eventually kill you. It’s just a matter of where the line is for you in lying.”
Soderbergh also has shown a willingness to tackle risky, non-commercial projects, such as the two-part film "Che" and the HBO series "K Street."
Yet the Sydney company’s synopsis for "Tot Mom" hints that the play will explore issues that intrigue people who have followed the case closely: “Why was Caylee’s disappearance not reported to police for over a month?
When was the child last seen? What was the strange smell in the boot of Casey Anthony’s car?
Who and where was the alleged babysitter?”
The Sydney Theatre Company is a prestigious group. The artistic directors are Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and her husband, Andrew Upton. The company’s patron is Giorgio Armani.
