A Hubert couple has been charged with child abuse after investigators say they were torturing their five children.

Larry W. Anderson, 25, and Janet Lynn Anderson, 28, both of West Volant Street,
were charged Monday by the
Onslow County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of felony child abuse,
six misdemeanor counts of child abuse, three counts of contributing to
the neglect of a juvenile and two counts of accessory after the fact.

The Andersons are accused of using torture to discipline their five children
August 2010 to July 26, 2011, according to warrants.

The alleged torture included tying one child’s hands behind his back and
duct-taping his mouth shut, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown told The Daily News.

“I just don’t understand people sometimes,” he said.

In a news release Brown said the Andersons are also accused of "restricting the children
from getting the food necessary to maintain health and nutrition."

The children have been taken from the Andersons and are in the custody of the Onslow County Department of Social Services.

The Andersons’ bond was set at $346,000 each. Their first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

HUBERT, N.C. - A U.S. Marine assigned to Camp Lejuene and his wife were arrested and charged with abusing and torturing their five children.

Lance Corporal Larry Anderson and his wife Janet Lynn Anderson were arrested Monday. The pair appeared in court this morning.

Corporal Anderson is assigned to the 2nd Battalion 9th Marine 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejuene.

Police reports between August 2010 and July 2011 show the Anderson's
used torture-type methods to punish their five children. They're also
charged with restricting food.

Additionally, Onslow County Sheriff said the Anderson's duct taped the children's mouths and did not bathe them regularly, which caused them to develop sores.

The children ranged in age from 18 months to 6 years old.

Neighbors who knew the couple were in disbelief.

Investigators told Nine on Your Side that doctors who treated the
children said one of them One was so badly malnourished that he would
have likely died within the week.

We've been told that the Onslow County Department of Social Services has taken custody of the children.
