October 22, 2011 - Police are asking for the community's help in locating 14-year-old Mathew Huluk.

Huluk was last seen on Oct. 21, leaving a Bancroft Drive residence around 10 p.m.

He was wearing pajama bottoms, a white t-shirt and crocks. Police described Huluk as measuring 5-5, weighing 90 pounds and having medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Police are currently in the Kingsway area looking for him. North Shore Search and Rescue and an Ontario Provincial Police chopper have been requested to assist in the search.

There is some concern for Huluk's well-being due to the cold overnight temperatures and his lack of suitable clothing.

Motorists are asked to keep their eyes peeled. Police stated that Huluk may be hitchhiking in the area.

If located, police are asking the public to not approach Huluk. Instead, contact police at 705-674-7511 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-TIPS, online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).

Update: Greater Sudbury Police Service has set up a command post on the Kingsway, near Levesque Street, to co-ordinate the search for a 14-year-old boy missing since 10 p.m. Friday.

The police service's search and rescue team has been looking for the teenager since he was reported missing. Today, it called in North Shore Search and Rescue and the Ontario Provincial Police helicopter unit to assist in the search.

Mathew Huluk left a residence on Bancroft Drive on Friday evening. He is described as five-foot-five, 90 pounds, with medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

When last seen, he was wearing pyjama bottoms, a white T-shirt and Crocs. Police expressed concerned for the teenager's welfare because of the cold temperatures overnight and because he wasn't wearing suitable clothing.

The temperature was below freezing with the wind chill overnight and early morning.

Staff Sgt. Dan Despatie, the on-scene commander at the search centre, said the OPP helicopter was delayed due to fog.

About 15 members of the volunteer North Shore Search and Rescue were ready to begin their work about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Despatie said patrol officers were also involved in the search.

Police were advising motorists to be on the lookout for the teenager hitchhiking, but not to pick him up.

Police are advising people not to approach the teenager if they see him, but to call police immediately if he is spotted.

Meanwhile Insp. Todd Zimmerman, who is in charge of the search, is continuing his investigation into the suspicious death of a 30-year-old man Thursday night on Pine Street.

Officers were called to 7 Pine St. and later deemed the death of David Allen McLeod as suspicious.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS (8477), online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).

Greater Sudbury Police Service is asking anyone who may have had contact with a missing 14-year-old boy to call police immediately.

Matthew Huluk went missing from a Bancroft Drive residence Friday about 10 p.m. When last seen he was wearing pyjama bottoms, a white T-shirt and Crocs. Police say they are concerned the teenager may be in danger because the weather has turned so cold and he is not properly dressed.

Matthew is described as five-foot-five, 90 pounds, with medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Staff Sgt. Eric Sanderson said a search-and-rescue effort has not resulted in the boy being found. Greater Sudbury Police called in the Ontario Provincial Police helicopter team and North Shore Search and Rescue.

Its own search and rescue team and patrol officers have also been involved in the search.

Anyone who may have seen the boy is asked to phone 705-674-7511 or 911 immediately.

Greater Sudbury Police Service suspended the ground search for Matthew Huluk, 14, about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police, North Shore Search and Rescue and the OPP helicopter team had been looking all day Saturday for Huluk, who went missing Friday about 10 p.m.

Police were concerned because the boy left a Bancroft Drive residence Friday evening dressed only in pyjama bottoms, a white T-shirt and Crocs. They were concerned for his safety given the cold temperatures in the last 24 hours.

Police say there was a sighting of the teenager in the Bancroft Drive-Weller Street area of Minnow Lake.

Attempts were made to locate him, but he was able to get away before police arrived at the location..

Huluk was observed wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans at the time of the sighting.

He is described as five-foot-five, 90 pounds, with medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Police are again asking the public to call 911 if they see Huluk or notice a young male in the area.

October 24, 2011 - Greater Sudbury police are still looking for 14-year old Matthew Huluk, even though intensive ground and helicopter search crews were called off on Oct.22. The decision came following a sighting of the teen in the Minnow Lake area.

Staff sergeant Robin Tiplady said authorities were initially concerned that, when the boy left a youth detention center on Oct. 21, he was not properly clothed for the weather. He was later seen better dressed in the area of Bancroft Drive and Weller Street. Attempts were made to locate him, but he was able to evade police prior to their arrival.

Matthew Huluk left a youth detention center on Oct. 21.

Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding the teen, and for drivers to be on the lookout for a young man hitchhiking in the area. Huluk was reportedly wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS (8477), online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).

Mathew Huluk: Found, deceased

Sault teen found dead in Parry Sound area - UPDATED
October 25, 2011

The death of 14-year-old Matthew Huluk will be investigated by the Ontario Coroner's office, a spokesperson said on Tuesday. Huluk went missing from a Bancroft Drive residence in Sudbury on Friday around 10 p.m., and was found dead in the Parry Sound area on Monday.

Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police are investigating his death. At this time, there is no evidence to indicate Matthew, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, was a victim of foul play, say Greater Sudbury Police Service.

The coroner's office investigates any deaths that are sudden and unexpected or include criteria like violence, misadventure, negligence, misconduct and malpractice by unfair means.

"In this particular case, it would be sudden and unexpected at the moment," said coroner's office spokesperson Cheryl Mahyr. The office investigates 18,000 deaths a year in Ontario, and handles 70 inquests per year. An inquest will begin if investigators think the results would prevent similar deaths in the future. Investigators will decide whether or not to begin an inquest after the death investigation, Mahyr said.

"The purpose of a death investigation is to answer the five Ws, who the deceased was, when they died, how they died and by what means and to consider the death for a possible inquest."

The investigation will take around six to nine months.

Greater Sudbury Police Services started looking for the teen over the weekend after it was reported that he left wearing nothing but a pajama bottom, a white T-shirt and Crocs. Officers were worried for his safety because of the cold weather.

"When we found out the missing person had run away and he wasn't properly clothed, we contacted north shore search and rescue ... we had canine units, we had assistance from EMS. We basically flooded the area where we figured he might have ran to in all attempts to locate him. There were reports of possible sightings," Insp. Todd Zimmerman of the criminal investigations division, said, adding that he can't confirm these sightings. Based on these sightings, police believed he had found warmer clothing and called off the official ground search on Saturday around 9 p.m.

Anthony Huluk, the teen's grandfather, described him as a "very nice fellow. Very polite and friendly. ... He liked to joke around."

Huluk's grandfather added that the teen, who has a twin brother, liked sports and fishing.

"We took him fishing. He loved fishing. Him and his brother, on a wonderful day, we went fishing," he said. "I used to go visit him. He was a very good child."

Kevan Huluk, Matthew's father, said he son was "a normal 14-year-old. He was a happy go lucky kid for the most part."

October 26, 2011 - Note: Police initially reported that Matthew Huluk was found on Monday, but later said he was found on Sunday.

Kevan Huluk remembers his son as a "happy go lucky kid" who loved to fish.

Matthew Huluk, 14, was found dead in Parry Sound on Sunday after leaving a Bancroft Drive residence in Sudbury on Friday.

By Tuesday morning, the teen had two Facebook groups up in his honour.

"He was a normal 14- year-old kid," Matthew's father said from Sault Ste. Marie, the teen's home-town.

Matthew, who had a twin brother, liked sports and would go on fishing trips with his grandfather, Anthony.

"He was a very nice fellow. Very polite and friendly," Anthony Huluk said, adding that he was "really, really upset" when he found out about Matthew's death.

"I used to go visit him. He was a very good (child). He liked to joke around," his grandfather said.

Both the Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Coroner's office are investigating the teen's death, which the OPP said was not a result of foul play.

The coroner's office investigates deaths that are sudden and unexpected or include criteria like violence, misadventure, negligence, misconduct and malpractice by unfair means.

"In this particular case, it would be sudden and unexpected at the moment," said coroner's office spokesperson Cheryl Mahyr.

The office investigates 18,000 deaths a year in Ontario and handles 70 inquests per year.

An inquest will begin if investigators think the results would prevent similar deaths in the future.

Investigators will decide whether or not to begin an inquest after the investigation into the boy's death is complete, Mahyr said.

"The purpose of a death investigation is to answer the five Ws-- who the deceased was, when they died, how they died and by what means and to consider the death for a possible inquest."

The investigation will take around six to nine months.

Greater Sudbury Police officers started looking for the teen during the weekend after it was reported that he left wearing nothing except pajama bottoms, a white T-shirt and crocs. Officers were worried for his safety because of the cold weather and deployed a ground and helicopter search team.

"We had canine units, we had assistance from EMS. We basically flooded the area where we figured he might have run to in all attempts to locate him. There were reports of possible sightings," Insp. Todd Zimmerman of the criminal investigations division said.

Based on these sightings, which Zimmerman can't confirm, police, who thought Huluk was evading officers, believed he had found warmer clothing and called off the official ground search on Saturday around 9 p.m.

The investigation into Matthew's death is ongoing.

14-year-old struck by train
October 26, 2011

Matthew Huluk, the 14-year-old who was found dead on Sunday, was struck by a train in the Killarney Township district of Parry Sound, West Parry Sound OPP said Wednesday.

"(He) was found by CN employees along the CN railway line," said Constable Charles Ostrom of the West Parry Sound OPP.

Employees found the body around 9 a.m. on Sunday, and immediately notified police and stopped railway traffic. The deceased was identified as the 14-year-old who went missing in Sudbury last Friday. A post mortem was conducted on Tuesday, but the cause of death will not be released until it is determined and confirmed by the coroner's office, Ostram said, adding that foul play has been ruled out.

"The investigating officers who visited the scene, along with the identification unit, have drawn the conclusion that there didn't appear to be anything that would lead to suspicion of foul play."
