Winnipeg police seek father, children missing after holiday
September 12, 2008

CANADA • Abby, 4, Dominic, 8, MARYK (2008) ~ Winnipeg MB Maryk-10
Dominic Maryk, 7, (top) and his six-year-old sister
Abby Maryk have been missing since Aug. 30, 2008.

Winnipeg police are asking for the public's help in locating two children who have been missing since Aug. 30.

The children, seven-year-old Dominic Maryk and his six-year-old sister, Abby, were on a holiday with their biological father, Kevin Maryk.

They were not returned to their mother, their custodial parent, as planned on Sept. 1.

"If there was any concerns on the guardian parent's part regarding this possibility … she would not have let the children go," said police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput.

"There was no indication by the suspect in this matter that the children weren't going to be returned, so therefore the guardian is very concerned right now."

When police went to Maryk's Winnipeg home, they found his belongings had been removed. Chaput said it appears Maryk did not intend to return.

Abby Maryk is described as having green eyes, wavy, shoulder-length, blonde hair and weighing about 40 pounds. Dominic has brown eyes, short brown hair and weighs 60 pounds.

Warrant issued for father

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Kevin Maryk, 37. He is described as being about 5-feet-10, weighing about 205 pounds. He has hazel eyes, and most recently had a shaved head and goatee.

Police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for
Kevin Maryk's arrest on two counts of abduction in
contravention of a court order.

They were last seen at a car rental agency in the area of King Edward Street in Winnipeg on Aug. 19, at the start of the authorized vacation.

Police said they have exhausted all leads in the case, so they're appealing to the public for help.

The vehicle hasn't been returned to the rental agency, police said Friday. Police declined to release a description of the vehicle, saying they don't know if he still has it or where he was headed.

"It's a very generic vehicle, and we're just worried that there would be … an influx of far too many calls in relation to a possible sighting of that vehicle," Chaput said.

"We really want to focus on the descriptions and what he looks like, what the kids look like, rather than focus on a vehicle right now."

There has been no record of Maryk or the children crossing the Canadian border.

An Amber Alert was not issued because it's not believed the children are in danger, police don't have a confirmed vehicle, and too much time has passed since the children disappeared.

"Investigators at this point do not believe the children are in danger, and that's the biggest, I guess, factor that doesn't meet the criteria for Amber Alert," Chaput said.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Maryk for two counts of abduction in contravention of a court order.

Anyone with information regarding Maryk's or the children's whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg police at (204) 986-6250 or (204) 986-6222 or Child Find at 1-800-532-9135.

Man sought in connection with children's abduction
September 16, 2011

CANADA • Abby, 4, Dominic, 8, MARYK (2008) ~ Winnipeg MB Maryk-23
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating a 41-year-old wanted male, Robert Groen. Groen was last seen on February 6, 2011, leaving his residence in Winnipeg. He is believed to have left the country. Groen is a known associate of Kevin Maryk. The Winnipeg Police Service's investigation into the abduction of Abby and Dominic Maryk in 2008 has revealed that Groen had assisted Kevin Maryk in the abduction. As such, he is currently wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

Police are now looking for a third man in the abduction of two Winnipeg children three years ago.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Robert Groen, who was last seen in the city in February this year.

Police said Groen is a friend of Kevin Maryk, the father of two missing children, Abby and Dominic Maryk.

Maryk and the two children disappeared in 2008, and police charged him with the abduction.

Police said Groen helped Maryk take the children, and now he’s been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

Groen is believed to have left Canada, said police.

He’s Caucasian, 5’9, and 160 pounds. He has a medium build and shaved brown hair, as well as green eyes.

Police asked anyone who’s had contact with Groen in the last two years, or who has information about the abduction is asked to call The Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.

Video Report: Winnipeg mother's plea

A Winnipeg woman whose two children were abducted in 2008 issued a public plea on Tuesday for any help that could lead to their safe return.

Emily Cablek has not seen her children, Dominic and Abby Maryk, since they left for a court-approved visit with their biological father, Kevin Maryk, in August 2008.

Winnipeg police have released new images that show what Dominic Maryk, left,
and his sister Abby may look like today. The children, who were seven and five
years old when they were last seen in August 2008, are now 10 and nine years
old, respectively. (Winnipeg Police Service)

Winnipeg police say they believe Maryk abducted Dominic and Abby — who were seven and five years old at the time — and removed them from Canada.

"I miss seeing their smiles. I miss not knowing if they're going to enjoy what I put in their lunches," an emotional Cablek told reporters in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

"I miss hearing them argue because to hear their voices, even arguing, would be a blessing right now."

Canada-wide arrest warrants have been issued for Maryk and two other men police believe may have helped in the abduction: Cody McKay, who is Maryk's nephew, and Robert Groen, who they describe as an associate.

The children's vacation with Kevin Maryk was approved by the court, even though their mother has legal custody.

On Tuesday, police released age-progression photographs that show what the children, now 10 and nine, would look like today.

Both police and Cablek say they believe there are people — friends, family members or acquaintances — who may know the whereabouts of Dominic and Abby.

Police said some people may also be helping Kevin Maryk and the children stay hidden from the authorities by providing shelter or financial support.

"I miss them so much. I've been trying my hardest to find them," Cablek said.

"I don't know if they understand why they're gone. I don't understand why they're gone."

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Dominic and Abby Maryk, Kevin Maryk, McKay or Groen is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service's missing persons unit at 204-986-6250.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information.

These photos were taken when Dominic was 7 years old and his sister, Abby, 5 years old, along with recently completed age progression photographs of each child. Dominic is now 10 years old and his sister Abby is now 9 years old. Their appearances, including their height, weight, hair color and length could now be very different.

Investigators are of the belief that acquaintances, friends, or family members may have knowledge as to the whereabouts of the children. Certain individuals may also be enabling them to stay hidden from the authorities by providing them with shelter or financial support. Anyone having knowledge of this occurring is asked to come forward and provide the necessary information required to locate Dominic and Abby and reunite them with their Mother.

Missing Winnipeg siblings found in Mexico
May 26, 2012

CANADA • Abby, 4, Dominic, 8, MARYK (2008) ~ Winnipeg MB Maryk_11

Two Winnipeg siblings who went missing nearly four years ago have been found in Mexico.

CTV Winnipeg's Stacy Ashley reported Saturday night that Dominic and Abby Maryk were located living under lock-and-key in Guadalajara.

Police allege that the children's father, Kevin Maryk, abducted the children and took them out of the country in August, 2008.

At the time, Dominic was 7 and Abby was 5.

On Thursday, a Mexican resident watching a television report about the children's story realized he recognized the children.

A private investigator in Louisiana who had been working on the case, Wilhelm von Mayer, said the man tried to go to Mexican officials, but to no avail.

"He saw them and said, ‘Wow, I know those kids, they're my neighbours," von Mayer told CTV Winnipeg in a telephone interview from Louisiana. "So he reported them to the Mexican police, the army and everybody he could, but nobody would listen to him."

Von Mayer and officials with the FIND Foundation in Mexico followed up on the tip, and a raid was subsequently conducted on the home where the children were living.

Von Mayer said the children spent their days behind locked doors, and were not allowed to attend school.

Ashley reported Saturday evening that the children were scheduled to fly back home to Winnipeg.

In December, the children's mother, Emily Cablek, said her children were always with her, even though she had no idea where they were.

"They're always in my heart," Cablek told Ashley. "I'm always looking for them. I won't ever stop looking for them."

When they return home, the children will be greeted by relieved family members, as well as a Christmas tree with four years' worth of gifts to open. Their grandmother has not taken down her tree from the year the children went missing, and has put new gifts underneath each year.

Abducted Winnipeg children return to Canada from Mexico
May 28, 2012

CANADA • Abby, 4, Dominic, 8, MARYK (2008) ~ Winnipeg MB Maryka10
Winnipeg children Dominic and Abby Maryk were reunited with their mother last week after a four-year separation. The pair was allegedly abducted by their father in 2008 and had been living in Mexico. A YouTube video released by Winnipeg police in 2011 about the case shows age-progression images of the siblings.

Nearly four years after they disappeared in the midst of a bitter custody dispute, two Winnipeg children who were living in Mexico have been reunited with their mother.

“I am the happiest mommy in the world right now,” said Emily Cablek, in a written statement. “We still have a long road ahead and I want my children to feel completely safe through it all … they deserve nothing less.”

Kevin Maryk allegedly abducted his children Dominic and Abby Maryk, then seven and five years-old, in August 2008 during a court ordered visit, said Winnipeg police.

With the help of Interpol, authorities located the children in Guadalajara, Mexico. On May 25 at 5 p.m., police took the children into custody and reunited them with their mother.

CANADA • Abby, 4, Dominic, 8, MARYK (2008) ~ Winnipeg MB Maryk_12
Abby and Dominic recognized their mom “100%” said Winnipeg police Det. Sgt. Shaunna Neufeld, with the missing persons unit.

Abby and Dominic recognized their mom “100%” said Winnipeg police Det. Sgt. Shaunna Neufeld, with the missing persons unit.

The children were living in a rough area of Guadalajara and likely weren’t attending school, she said. The siblings also brought home a small dog.

Police arrested Mr. Maryk, 40. He is being held in Mexico City until he can be extradited back to Canada to face charges of abduction in contravention of a court order and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence (child abduction).

Another man, 41-year-old Robert Neil Groen, is also in custody in Mexico. He will face a charge of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence (child abduction).

Police have also issued a Canada-wide warrant for 23-year-old Cody John McKay, who is still at large.

“I want to thank the Winnipeg police missing persons unit for their amazing persistence and to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection for standing by me and guiding me through the worst 45 months of my life,” Ms. Cablek said.

“You all helped me stay strong for the most important moment of my life, for that you will always be in my heart and a part of my family.”

Ms. Cablek has asked for privacy so that her family can begin to heal.

Christy Dzikowicz, of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, said the children seemed to be in decent physical condition at a Monday media conference hosted by the Winnipeg Police Service.

The children essentially were confined for years without communication with the outside world, she said.

“As we see in many parental abductions, particularly ones of this duration, there’s been much damage done and alienation. However . . . in the last 12 to 18 hours, there has been such a remarkable shift, that it’s beginning to feel a bit more like the happy reunification you would dream of, or hope for.

“That being said, we’re not naive, there’s a lot of work to be done but they are content at this moment, they are content with their mother, and we have every expectation that there’s where they’ll remain.”

Police said the tip came after the children had been moved five times, including to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, said Det. Sgt. Neufeld.

Det. Sgt. Neufeld called the arrests the result of “a little bit of luck, a lot of persistence.”

“As a mom of three kids, I can’t imagine a week without my kids, let alone three and a half, almost four years,” she said.

Witnesses allege the siblings spent their days inside a home surrounded by security cameras and barbed wire.

The siblings will have access to a psychologist, Det. Sgt. Neufeld said.

Third suspect sought in Canadian children's abduction
May 28, 2011

snipped.....

-On Friday, the children were found in Guadalajara, Mexico, and reunited with Cablek over the weekend.

Their father, Kevin Douglas Maryk, 41, was arrested, along with his friend and alleged accomplice, Robert Groen, 42.

Another alleged accomplice is still being sought by police, who have issued a Canada-wide warrant for Cody McKay, 23, Kevin Maryk's nephew.

-The living conditions for the children were poor, police said. They didn't attend school or have access to medical attention, said Christy Dzikowicz of the CCCP.

"They weren't allowed out in the light of day," she said.

In an effort to elude police, the children were moved at least five different times, police said.

Maryk and Groen are being held in Mexico City pending extradition.

Maryk is charged with abduction in contravention of a court order and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, namely child abduction.

Groen is charged with conspiracy.
