Delray Beach
police reported Tuesday afternoon that they have found a teenage girl –
who sent a text message to her mother about 7 a.m. saying that she was
being held in the trunk of a car – safe in Miami.
No
other details were immediately available from police. A family member of
the girl also told the Sun Sentinel she had been found safe.
Police spent much of Tuesday searching for Jade Beneby, 17, who was walking to her bus stop at the intersection of SW 8th
Avenue and SW 1st Street at about 7 a.m. when she sent her mother a
text message saying she was in trouble and needed help, according to
police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero.

“She sent an
additional text regarding her having done all that she could and stating
that she was in the trunk of a vehicle,” Guerriero said in a statement.
“Jade was last seen wearing a long sleeve white shirt and long blue
jeans. She had a pink bag.”
Guerriero said about 3:30 p.m. that Jade had been found
safe, and that detectives were on their way to Miami to interview her
and learn the circumstances of her disappearance.
"Detectives
called and said Jade has been found in Miami and she is safe,"
Guerriero said. "We are so grateful, and I’m sure her mother is as well.
We will conduct the investigation from there."
A family member told the Sun Sentinel that Jade was recovered by law enforcement in a motel in Hialeah,
and that she had been taken to the motel against her will. A clerk at
the motel, the El Paraiso, confirmed there was a police raid there
Tuesday afternoon but said she had no further details.
Jade's
mother, Sandra Willis, appeared briefly outside her home Tuesday
afternoon after Jade was found, with family members and supporters
standing behind her.
"When I got text saying, 'Help me mommy,' all
I knew was to call on Jesus," Willis said. "We looked to God and prayed
to God and came together in one accord."
Jade's cousin, Pat Glover,
expressed the family's relief. "Everybody is so happy everything is all
right. Thank God that they found her," he said.
Jade’s
school bus typically makes it’s scheduled pickup at 6:53 a.m., and
that’s what happened Tuesday morning, according to school district
spokeswoman Vickie Middlebrooks.
Guerriero held an
earlier news conference at 2 p.m. to say that investigators don’t
believe it is a hoax and that they are treating it like a kidnapping.
She said Jade is a good student, a senior at Atlantic High, and has a
good relationship with her mother. Investigators are focusing on talking
to her friends to learn what she might have told them in recent days,
Guerriero said.
““Her mom is very distraught, very upset,” she said.
Not many tips have come in from the public. “We had hoped for more,” Guerriero said.
Police did not receive any 911 calls about the reported
abduction; Jade’s mother came into the Delray Beach police station to
report her daughter missing, Guerriero said. Police are trying to track
Jade’s cell phone, Guerriero said, a process that can take time.
Family
and friends were gathered Tuesday afternoon at Willis' home. One of
Jade's siblings, Denise Johnson of Palm Springs, said she did not
believe Jade had run away, and did not think she had a boyfriend because
her father did not want her to date until she got older.
“She’s
funny. She’s very playful. She’s a sweetheart. She is a beautiful girl
inside and out,” Johnson said, outside Willis’ house. “It’s like you are
not safe to walk to the bus stop.”
Johnson said she
hoped Jade’s abductor would decide to release her. “You see it on TV,
but you never think it will happen in your family,” she said.
The
Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued a statewide alert for the
missing girl, then rescinded it after she was found. Delray Beach police
also had been in contact with the FBI.

DELRAY BEACH — A 17-year-old girl who was the subject of a nearly eight-hour, statewide search on Tuesday is back with her family this morning, according to police.

Delray Beach Police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Guerriero said Jade Beneby, an Atlantic High School senior, "was turned over to her mother (Sandra Willis Stewart) last night."

She added that there was "nothing new" this morning in what is still considered "an active investigation" into Jade's possible abduction after she left home Tuesday morning to walk to a school bus stop.

There was little commotion at the Stewart home this morning, compared to Tuesday when dozens of friends and family swarmed the fenced property on Southwest Fourth Street to support the distraught mother.

After learning that Jade had been found Tuesday afternoon, Stewart proudly proclaimed that she never lost her faith.

"Thank you, Jesus, for bringing my daughter home," Stewart said.

But details concerning Jade' possible abduction remain sketchy. Detectives have said only that Jade was found safe in a Miami hotel by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Neither Stewart nor Jade's father - Charles Beneby - could provide any additional information Tuesday night concerning their daughter's whereabouts or details of her alleged abduction.

As a result, there are still many questions surrounding Tuesday's events. Not the least o which is whether the teen was actually abducted, or was it a runaway attempt gone bad?

Detectives were looking to get to the bottom of that question and more as they interviewed jade about her alleged abduction, which prompted FDLE to issue a statewide Missing Child Alert.

The frantic day was set in motion when Stewart walked into the police department saying her daughter had been abducted and thrown into the trunk of "a silver car." An Amber Alert was not issued because the department lacked tag or vehicle information.

She said Jade left home around 6:30 a.m. for the bus stop near Southwest Eighth Avenue and Southwest First Street, and managed to make it there. But the Palm Beach County School District reported that the bus picked up students at the stop around 6:49 a.m.

Meanwhile, Stewart said she was waiting for her mother to stop by with a spare key to her home after she locked her keys in her car. That's when Stewart got the first text message from Jade at 7:05 a.m.: "Mommy help me, I'm in trouble."

A minute later, Jade sent a second text saying "I did all I could," and that she was now in the "trunk of a silver car."

By that time, Stewart's mother had arrived. Together, they drove to the police department. Fliers were printed by the department and the missing child alert was issued on a state level.

Stewart said she went home, where she locked herself in her room and prayed. During the search, authorities were reportedly talking to her friends and tracking her cellphone until she was found.

Delray Beach police have a "possible suspect" in the case of a teenager who says she was abducted Tuesday morning from her school bus stop, but they not releasing any more details.

"He is still being investigated," police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero said in an e-mail Wednesday afternoon. "No charges have been filed," and authorities are not identifying him, she said.
