Amber Alert Posted For Missing 6-Day-Old Boy

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in Pitt County have issued an Amber Alert for a 6-day-old boy and his mother, who they believe has abducted him.


The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office issued the alert Monday for Kayden
Chavis, described as approximately 20 inches long and weighing six
pounds.





Deputies are also looking for 30-year-old Jessica Chavis, identified as a
black female who is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 130 pounds with black
hair.
The Daily Reflector of Greenville reports that sheriff’s department
spokeswoman Christy Wallace said the baby was at the home of an
unidentified relative and that the Pitt County Department of Social
Services was coming to take custody of the boy. Wallace didn’t say why
the department was taking custody.


Officials believe the baby is in danger, but won’t say why.

Authorities in Pitt County have found a 6-day-old boy and his mother, who they believe abducted him from a relative's home.
Capt. Paula Dance with the Pitt County Sheriff's Office said
investigators acted on information they received and went to a home
inside the Greenville city limits Monday evening. The boy and his mother
were found unharmed at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office issued an Amber Alert Monday for Kayden Chavis
and his mother, 30-year-old Jessica Chavis. The boy had been at the home
of an unidentified relative, and Pitt County Department of Social
Services was coming to take custody of Kayden because of what Dance
described as cognitive issues with Jessica Chavis.

Dance said formal charges would be filed Tuesday after talks with the district attorney's office.

NEW INFO: Amber Alert Mom Out Of Jail

A mother charged after her newborn baby was the subject of a statewide Amber Alert has gotten out of jail.


The Pitt County Detention Center says Jessica Chavis was released last night on a $3,000 bond.


The 30 year old mother was charged with misdemeanor child
abuse Monday night after deputies say she took off with her six day old
baby.


Sheriff's deputies believe Chavis panicked when she
learned the Department of Social Services planned to take custody of the
newborn. DSS already has custody of her other children.

Deputies say a mother whose son was the subject of an
Amber Alert turned herself in, apparently because the woman had nowhere
to go.


Jessica Chavis, 30, was charged with misdemeanor child abuse Monday night.


Deputies arrested the mother and took her six day old baby
at an apartment complex off Spring Forest Road around 8:00 p.m.. They
say the arrest was arranged through Chavis' sister.


Sheriff's deputies believe Chavis panicked when she

Investigators say they'll be discussing with the district attorney whether any family members should be charged in the case.


They credit the broadcasting of the story, in addition to the Amber Alert which lead to the discovery of Chavis and her baby.
