MOUNT VERNON — Police have issued an Amber Alert for a 5-year-old boy missing from Mount Vernon.Police say the boy, Ranaldo Brown, was last seen on West Third Street in Mount Vernon on Sunday around 7:30 a.m.



They say the child is 3-feet, 6-inches tall, weighs 50 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair. He was wearing blue denim shorts, white cutoff shirt and red-and-black sneakers.

Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Thomas Whaley. They say he is not related to the child and is the former boyfriend of the boy’s mother.

He was last seen on foot, possibly heading for New York City.

Police say the suspect has an extensive criminal record.

They ask anyone with information to call 911 or Mount Vernon police at 866-NYS-Amber.

Officials issued an Amber Alert this morning, one day after a career criminal abducted a 5-year-old boy in Westchester County, police said.

Ranaldo Brown was abducted at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday on West 3rd Street in Mount Vernon.

Police say his abductor, Thomas Whaley, 49, used to date the boy's mother -- but he and the child are not related.

Officials think Whaley and the boy could possibly be headed for New York City.

Brown is 3’ 6” and weighs about 50 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue denim shorts, a white cutoff shirt, and red and black sneakers.

Whaley, 49, is about six feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He has an extensive criminal history, including violent and weapon offenses, police said.

An amber alert issued for a 5-year-old boy police
said was abducted by his mother's ex-boyfriend in Westchester County was
canceled after the child was found safe Monday morning, authorities said.

Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis says
little Ranaldo Brown has been returned to his mother. Thomas Whaley, who
has no relation to Brown but is his mother's ex-boyfriend is being
questioned by police, authorities said.

Police had been looking for Brown
since Sunday morning after Whaley, 49, allegedly abducted him from his
grandfather's house in Mount Vernon.

Brown's 26-year-old mother has a
restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Whaley, who police say has an
extensive criminal record. The grandfather did not know about the
protection order, however, and let Whaley take the child, police said.

Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Carl
Bell said he didn't know why Whaley took the child. Bell said Whaley
told the grandfather he wanted to take the boy with him to see some of
his friends in the Bronx. The police commissioner also said it appeared
Whaley and the boy were close while Whaley was dating the child's mother.

When Whaley didn't return the child
Sunday evening, Brown's mother called police. Whaley called the
grandfather at about 9:30 a.m. Monday and told him where the boy could
be found. Detectives picked him up in the Bronx.
