New Haven family seeks help in finding missing girl- 15 years old
08/10/2012

NEW HAVEN — The family of a 15-year-old apparent runaway is seeking the
public’s help in locating the girl who hasn’t been seen in nearly two
weeks.

Leah Jackson, who likes to be called Leah Carmela, was last seen on July 28.

“The
more information I obtain and give to police, the less work they have
to do,” said her mother Shari Muhammad. “Is she okay. I know nothing.
She left in the middle of the night.

“She would never do anything like that.”
Muhammad and police believe she is a runaway. She shut down her Facebook
page before she disappeared and the family is petitioning to get the
social media site to allow them access to look for clues on her
whereabouts.

Police spokesman Officer David Hartman said police
are investigating the missing person’s report but have no reason to
believe, based on the information investigators have at this point, to
believe she is endangered.

Her family suspects she might be with a
Hispanic male in his early 20s. The family has been posting flyers at
corner stores, bus stops, the train station, all around town, the mother
said.

“I’m just desperately trying to find my daughter,” said Muhammed.
Police asked anyone who sees the girl to contact authorities at 203-946-6304.

The mother’s number is 203-435-8486.

Muhammad, Leah’s mom, described her daughter (pictured) as 5 feet tall,
105 pounds, with light brown skin and pink highlights in her hair. She
was last seen wearing a multi-colored tank-top and dark blue “skinny

“Johnny.”
Since
her disappearance, Leah’s Facebook account has been deleted, Muhammad
said. “There’s no trace of her. We can’t find her anywhere. We’ve got a
cold trail. She would never just leave and not contact me at all.”
Muhammad said she has filed a report with the police and put up flyers around town.
“It takes every bit of your soul to just hold yourself together,” she said. “Inside it’s eating me apart not knowing.”

Located Safely: Leah Jackson, 15, New Haven, CT

Three
weeks after a 15-year-old went missing, city detectives found her safe
and sound at a friend’s house on Edgewood Avenue, according to Assistant
Police Chief Archie Generoso.

The
girl, Leah Jackson (pictured), went missing since July 28. Her family
feared she had arranged to meet an older man known as “Johnny” with whom
she had conversed on Facebook. Police and the family issued several calls for public help in tracking her down.

Police
got a break over the weekend when Leah was caught on camera as she and
some friends made a purchase at Target in Milford, Generoso said.
Detective Rosealee Reed, who led the case, traced the credit card that
was used in the purchase to an address in New Haven. The address was a
year old, but it started a trail police were able to follow.

That
trail led to a home on Edgewood Avenue, where police found Leah Monday
around 4:40 p.m., according to Generoso. Leah was safe with a friend and
that friend’s family.

“There
was nothing nefarious,” Generoso said. “She was staying a female friend
her age she had found on Facebook. She was sitting watching TV.”
