Man accused of beating 2-year-old girl again

ORLANDO -- A man accused of severely beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter was previously convicted of abusing the same girl.

Orange County Sheriff's deputies arrested 23-year-old Michael DeLeon Wednesday after they said he beat the girl so badly, her brain bled.

In an arrest affidavit, investigators reported that DeLeon was arrested in Sanford last year for abusing the same child.

He later pleaded no contest to charges of shaking the girl.

“This is savage. We unfortunately encounter these things every day and I cannot emphasize this enough that a parent is the first line of defense for a child, especially a 2-year-old who cannot protect themselves,” said DCF spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner.

In an emergency protective custody hearing Friday, a judge ordered the girlfriend's three other children be put in foster care.

According to DCF, the mother said she thought her daughter may have fallen from a bunk bed.

She's now on a ventilator at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

DeLeon is charged with aggravated child abuse.

Child abuse suspect facing new charges

A man accused of severely injuring his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter —who was slated be released from jail Wednesday — is now facing new charges.

Seminole County filed a last minute violation of probation charge from a 2011 child abuse conviction against Michael DeLeon minutes after an Orange County judge ordered him released on a personal recognizance bond.


The new Seminole County charge comes with no bond and will likely delay DeLeon's release.

Orange County Sheriff's investigators arrested and charged 23-year-old DeLeon with aggravated child abuse last week.

He was accused of beating the child so severely that doctors had to remove part of her skull to alleviate the swelling of her brain. The girl is still recovering at a local hospital, but has been removed from a ventilator. DeLeon is not allowed to see the child.

"There are conflicting statements [from the mother], but that does not amount to probable cause," Orange County Judge Deb Blechman said, before ordering him released.

Blechman warned that DeLeon could be rearrested if more evidence was produced.

DeLeon is currently on probation in Seminole County for a 2011 child abuse case involving the same victim.

Shortly after the hearing Wednesday, Orange County Jail officials learned of the new charge from Seminole County and kept DeLeon behind bars, according to jail spokesman Allen Moore.

DeLeon is also on probation in Osceola County on a drug conviction, but he has not been charged with a violation of probation in that case.

The child's mother told investigators she and DeLeon were the only adults in the home when the 2-year-old girl was injured. But officials said she told several different stories about how the child was hurt.

In one statement she claimed the girl could have been hurt after falling off of a bunk bed while alone in her bedroom, while the mother and DeLeon were watching TV in another room.

The mother later told a nurse she was in room with the child and "wished she would have caught her" when the child fell.

A third version of the woman's story claimed DeLeon was alone in the room with the child when she was injured.

A few days before the child was severely injured, she had returned to Central Florida after spending a month with her biological father in another state.

This judge is nuts, he was going to turn this monster loose.

Why wasn't the mother arrested. It sounds like she's covering for the bf. Poor baby should have stayed with her father.

Babyj, these POS mothers always stand by the POS boyfriends to the determent of poor helpless babies and children.

This woman knew he was abusing her baby and it was OK with her.

She needs to be in prison.

She needs to have a vet spay her so she can't breed anymore.
