Police: Asheville toddler at center of Amber Alert returned

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An Amber Alert that was issued for a missing 16-month-old from Asheville has been canceled.
The N.C. Department of Public Safety issued the alert for Jayden Wilson Squire shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
The alert was canceled shortly after 9:15 a.m. Friday after Asheville police said the boy was brought to the department by a relative of his father, Russell Allen Wilson Squire, who was the alleged abductor.
According to the N.C. DPS, Squire was allegedly abducted by 25-year-old Russell Squire on Thursday afternoon at the Thunderbird Motel at 835 Tunnel Road in Asheville.

Officials say the suspect allegedly strangled the boy’s mother to the point where she lost consciousness before abducting the child.
He was last seen leaving the motel on foot.
It was not clear if authorities were still searching for the suspect since the boy had been returned. There was no updated information as to his most recent whereabouts.
Russell Squire is described as standing 5’11″ tall and weighing 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, pants and white Air Jordan sneakers. He has a tattoo of a cross on his back.
Anyone with information about the alleged abduction is asked to call Asheville police at (828) 259-5854.
