A CHILD ABDUCTION OCCURRED ON THE AFTERNOON OF MARCH 6, 2014, IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA. THE CHILD IS NICHOLAS JOHNSTON A 12-YEAR-OLD WHITE MALE, 4 FEET 8 INCHES, 80 POUNDS WITH BLOND HAIR AND BLUE EYES. THE SUSPECT IS SRI JOHNSTON A 49-YEAR-OLD WHITE FEMALE, 5 FEET 1 INCH, 125 POUNDS WITH BROWN HAIR AND BROWN EYES.
JOHNSTON IS POSSIBLY DRIVING A TAN 1998 SATURN 4-DOOR, CA LICENSE PLATE NUMBER 4AUU679.

The California Highway Patrol sent out an Amber Alert on Monday over cellphones for a Long Beach boy allegedly abducted from his home by his mother.

The victim was identified as Nicholas Johnston, 12, described as white with blond hair and blue eyes, 4-feet-8 inches tall and about 80 pounds.

CHP officials say the boy was abducted on Thursday by his mother, Sri Johnston, 49, who is white with brown hair and brown eyes, about 5 feet tall and 125 pounds.

She was last seen driving a tan 1998 Saturn four-door with California license plate 4AUU679.

The alert was sent to cellphones around 1:20 p.m., shortly after the CHP made the announcement through its Twitter account.

The Long Beach Police Department could not be reached for comment.

Boy abducted in Long Beach, authorities say

LONG BEACH, Calif. - A woman who allegedly abducted her 12-year-old son in Long Beach was arrested in Oceanside Monday about 90 minutes after a statewide Amber Alert was issued.

Sri Ann Johnston, 48, was arrested at about 2:40 p.m. by members of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, according to Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department. She allegedly abducted her son, Nicholas, on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Shortly after her arrest, the District Attorney's Office announced that it had charged Johnston with one count each of kidnapping and child custody deprivation. She is expected to be arraigned later this week, and faces up to 13 years and eight months in prison, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Johnston picked Nicholas up last Wednesday for visitation, but failed to take him to school the next day.

The boy was recovered safe when Johnston was arrested Monday, Pratt said, adding that the boy's father has primary custody of the child.

Pratt said an Amber Alert was not issued until Monday because the case did not initially "meet the criteria" for the alert. She said an alert was declared once "new information" was gathered.

She said Sri Johnston was only allowed to have the child "in a very specific time frame. She was in violation of that."

The Amber Alert likely got the attention of many cellphone owners, thanks to a notification system that prompts a loud alert sound to emanate from mobile devices.
