Police: 3-year-old girl raped, beaten before her death

3-year-old Charlie Brame was raped and beaten before she died, police say
Step-father charged with rape of 3-year-old Orlando girl, autopsy to determine cause of death


When paramedics found 3-year-old Charlie Brame at her Orlando home Sunday, she had bruises on her back and head, signs of sexual abuse and she could barely breath.

Doctors later found swelling on her scalp and blood pooling in her skull, an Orlando Police Department report said.

Police say the girl was brutally raped and beaten before she was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children where she died Monday.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of her death.

Police believe Charlie was injured by her step-father, Pascal Kaufmann, a 19-year-old German national. Kaufmann was arrested Sunday on charges of child neglect and child rape. He was denied bail.

More charges could be filed following the results of an autopsy, according to OPD spokeswoman Lt. Lovetta Quinn-Henry.

Charlie's mother, whose name was not released, told investigators Kaufmann moved to the United States from Germany in August. She and Kaufmann were married "about a week ago" according to the report.

Kaufmann's arrest report says he was the only one with the girl when she was injured. He was left to care for Charlie when her mother went to work about 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kaufmann told investigators the girl was injured when she fell off of a bed onto the carpeted floor. He thought she was fine but when she didn't get up for several seconds, he moved her to the living room couch and called his wife using a neighbor's cell phone.

Neighbors said Kaufmann was "calm" when he borrowed their phone and although he was asked several times if he needed help, he declined.

Doctors found signs of recent and severe sexual and physical abuse on the child's body.

Charlie's doctor "stated his findings were positive for aggravated child abuse with severe brain trauma," the report said. Doctors "indicated that is was unlikely that (Charlie) could receive such severe head trauma from falling out of the bed and was more consistent with blunt trauma to the back of the skull."

Family members described the girl as "happy and healthy" before she died Sunday.

Charlie's father, whose name was also removed from the police report, said he hadn't seen his daughter in about two weeks because of issues between he and Charlie's mother that cropped up after Kaufmann "spanked" the little girl.

"He stated he has told (Charlie's mother) several times not to leave his child alone with Pascal because he doesn't know him and he is very young," the report said. "He stated that several weeks ago, his daughter told him that Pascal spanked her.

"He said he confronted (Charlie's mother) about it and told her that Pascal is to never touch his daughter again or he would kill him."

The state Department of Children and Families is working with Orlando police to investigate Charlie's death. DCF officials would not say if the family had ever been investigated in the past.

Instead of hiding the identity of the mother, they need to arrest her and post her mug shot.  She should be in prison along with her boy toy.
