FBI destroyed heart shape sticker residue evidence

WKMG-Channel 6 teased its big story by running a warning at the screen's top during last night's "CSI" and "The Mentalist."
There was reason for the crowing: It was an explosive story -- and another demonstration of Tony Pipitone's reporting skill.
The story led the 11 p.m. news: Pipitone reported that the FBI had destroyed an important bit of evidence in the case against Casey Anthony. She is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee.
"A blunder in the case against Casey Anthony," anchor Lauren Rowe said.
Pipitone called the evidence "one of those jaw-dropping disclosures" in the case. A heart-shaped sticker had been found on the duct tape around Caylee's mouth and nose. Similar hearts were found in mom Casey's crafts closet.
But an FBI log reveals that the lab destroyed the heart's outline on the duct tape, Pipitone reported in his exclusive.
The result: "It can never be compared to the hearts recovered from Casey's home or on a piece of cardboard found 30 to 40 feat away from Caylee's skull," Pipitone reported.
How did this happen? "Any outline was obliterated in the fingerprint-testing process," Pipitone read from a report that station had obtained before its official release.
And Pipitone added that the FBI didn't take a photo of the heart-shaped image before the testing, which revealed no fingerprints on the duct tape.
The FBI had refused to comment on the revelation that it didn't take a photo, Pipitone said.
"We don't know if some other agency might have taken a similar picture that shows such an outline," Pipitone said. "But we know that there's no mention of such a photo in the 8,000 pages that have been released so far."
It was another first-rate report from Pipitone. And he promised a follow-up today: an interview with a former prosecutor about the revelation could mean to the case.
