EDWARDSVILLE - A history
of abuse preceded the death of a toddler, whose stepmother received a
40-year sentence Thursday for killing him by banging his head against a
doorframe.
Associate Judge James Hackett handed down the sentence to Jami Renee
Anderson, 29, of the 3100 block of Fernwood Avenue, Alton, who had
pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in Madison County
Circuit Court in November.
That plea was in exchange for a prosecution agreement to seek a
sentence of no more than 50 years in the case involving 22-month-old
Chase Anderson. The child died last March 9, a day after being injured.
Assistant Madison County State's Attorney Jennifer Vucich sought the
50-year sentence, while defense attorney Scott Turner argued for a
minimum 20-year sentence, saying that his client suffered from bipolar
disorder and was medicated at the time of the incident.
Hackett leaned to the higher end of the range.
"We can't tolerate the murder of our children," he said.
Jane Turner, a pathologist for the St. Louis Medical Examiner's
Office, testified that the child's body showed signs of at least five
previous injuries, which she called indicative of abuse.
The fatal injury came about after Anderson admitted she lost her
temper and slammed the child against the doorframe - after first making
up a story about a fall.
The doctor described the injury as "a high-velocity impact injury not resulting from a fall."
Vucich pointed out that Anderson's mother - not Anderson - called
911 to report the child's injuries, and when police arrived, they found
Anderson hiding in the basement instead of tending to the child.
Vucich said previously that Anderson did not dial 911 because authorities had a warrant out for her.
Anderson had been married to her husband, James Anderson, for only
10 days. Her two natural children were asleep in the home when the
stepson was killed.
Instead of seeking medical help for the child, Anderson called her
husband. He called his mother, who went to the home, saw the baby's
condition and dialed 911.
The child died a few hours later of blunt trauma to the head in a St. Louis hospital.
Alton Police Chief David Hayes heaped praise on prosecutors.
"We appreciate the way the State's Attorney's Office - particularly
Jen Vucich - prosecutes the people who kill our kids," he said.
There had been no previous police calls regarding the child, he said.
James Anderson filed for divorce shortly after the incident. The
father of Jami Anderson's two natural children filed for and obtained
an order of protection shortly after the incident.
Shortly after the death, the child's grandmother, Lee Harrison of Roxana, described Chase as a normal, happy boy.
"He was a good little boy, always playing, laughing and running," she said.
