The woman accused
of abducting her 13-month-old step-niece last month from a Swansea,
Mass., convenience store was order held on $250,000 cash bail in Fall
River District Court Tuesday.

Alyssa Dawn Johnson, who was captured in Pennsylvania, was brought to
Massachusetts overnight after waiving extradition. She pleaded not
guilty to the Feb. 18 kidnapping, according to the office of Bristol
County District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter.

The abduction sparked an Amber Alert in Massachusetts and Rhode
Island.

The
toddler, Jaylin Boudria of Fall River, was found hours later unharmed
and abandoned in a parking lot in Middletown, Conn. The police said
they had been told that the woman was hoping to use the child to
convince an old boyfriend that he was the father.

Johnson, who also uses the first name Kimberly, was arrested at a
Pennsylvania women's shelter on Feb. 25. She had been hiding there using
an alias and stolen identification.

Alyssa Dawn Johnson was indicted Monday on charges of kidnapping,
assault and battery and child endangerment.

Johnson, 38, of Altoona, Pa., is charged with kidnapping her 13-month
old niece in Swansea on Feb. 18 and abandoning the baby about two hours
later in a parking lot in Middletown, Conn. She also uses the name
Kimberly Johnson.

She was arrested on Feb. 25 in Holidaysburg, Pa., and was returned to
Bristol County to face charges. She was arraigned in District Court on
March 22 and has been held since on $2.5 million bail.

Johnson, police say, resumed contact with her half-sister Kristen
Johnson late last year after an 8-year separation.

On Feb. 18, while driving Kristen Johnson and Kristen’s two children to
the Swansea Mall for a shopping trip, Alyssa Johnson stopped at a gas
station and asked her sister to get her a cup of coffee.

When Kristen got out of the car, police allege, Alyssa Johnson got her
2-year-old niece out of the car, escorted her to the store and then got
back in her car and drove away with the baby still inside.

Police say Johnson planned to go to Altoona to present the baby to a
former boyfriend and convince him he was the father. But she had second
thoughts and stopped in Middletown, Conn., 110 miles away, and left the
baby, with her car seat and diaper bag, in the parking lot of a medical
clinic. Alyssa Johnson then drove off, leaving the baby behind, police
say.

The baby was found unharmed a short time later. She was reunited with
her parents after police found an envelope with the baby’s name and
medical records inside the diaper bag.
Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter announced the indictment by
the Bristol County grand jury. Johnson was arraigned under the name
Alyssa Johnson.

Alyssa Johnson was named Kimberly Johnson when she was born in Fall
River. During her arraignment, she told District Court Judge John Julian
she legally changed her name to Alyssa Dawn Johnson. The police report
on the kidnapping lists seven other names Alyssa Johnson has used in
the past.

She has been held since her return to Massachusetts. She would need to
post a $2.5 million bond or $250,000 in cash to secure her release on
bail.

Her next court date will be for her arraignment in Superior Court in New
Bedford. That appearance has not yet been scheduled, according to
Sutter’s office.

The woman accused of abducting her niece, sparking a multi-state
amber alert-- has been moved to a jail in western Massachusetts. The
Bristol County District Attorney's Office confirms that Alyssa Dawn
Johnson has been transferred to the Hampden County Correctional Facility
near Springfield. That's because of the publicity surrounding her case.
Johnson's superior court arraignment has now been pushed back until
the end of the month. She's accused of kidnapping her half-sister's
daughter from a Swansea gas station in February. The little girl
was found several hours later - abandoned but safe - in a Middletown,
Connecticut parking lot. Johnson was arrested days later in Altoona,
Pennsylvania.
