Meeker OK --- A 2-year-old girl was found
dead inside a vehicle outside the Tender Care Too day care in Meeker
after being in the car for more than six hours, authorities said.

Destiny Morse said she found her daughter,
Atrinity Hasbell, inside the vehicle when she arrived to pick her
up from day care Wednesday afternoon.

"I looked back in the backseat and she was just
sitting there in her car seat, and she was all stiff and stuck to her
car seat, and her lips and nose were black and she was all covered in
sweat," Morse said.

Morse said her roommate arrived at the daycare
with her own children and Atrinity. According to Morse, the roommate
brought her sons inside the day care, left the van there and walked down
the street to her job. Morse said the roommate forgot Atrinity was in
the back of the van.

"I don't blame Jessica," Morse said. "I know she
didn't do this to me on purpose. I know she cares about me. I know she
loves Atrinity."

Morse said losing her only child should serve as a
reminder for other parents now that summer is around the corner, words
that were echoed by Atrinity's grandmother.

"Accidents happen; it's something that's
terrible," said Arettia Bjorkdahl, Atrinity's grandmother. "She's a
beautiful little girl. She was really smart and had an unbelievable
future ahead of her. I guess I feel better knowing she's with God."

Meeker's Chief of Police, Don Conner, said he's
asked investigators with the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office
to assist with the investigation.

"They're talking with witnesses tonight and will
be for the next few days," said Meeker Police Chief Conner.

A mother of a 2-year-old girl who died after being left in a hot car
says it was the "switched routines" of her and her roommate that led to
the child's death.

The state Medical Examiner's
office has ruled that Atrinity Marie Hasbell of Chandler died Tuesday of
hyperthermia. The girl's manner of death has not been determined.

District Attorney Richard Smothermon says he hasn't decided if charges
will be filed. Eighteen-year-old Sarenity Morse, the girl's
mother, says her 21-year-old roommate was to have dropped Atrinity off
at a day care Tuesday morning when the roommate left her two sons there.

Authorities
say Morse went to school and the roommate went to work nearby. Both
arrived back at the day care at 3:30 p.m. to pick up their children and
found Atrinity in the car, covered in sweat.

ATRINITY HASBELL - 2 yo (2010) - Meeker (E of OK City) OK 413787 Accidents happen??? Leaving a child in a sweltering vehicle because you "forgot" they were with you??? That's not an accident, that's just plain ignorant. This is a crime and this woman needs to be charged. Ooohhh this crap makes me mad, furious.
I believe this ignorant roommate should be shut in a car for 8 hours, in the heat-that to me would be great punishment.

A Chandler woman is charged with
second-degree manslaughter after she leaves a friend's child in a hot
mini-van.Lincoln County prosecutors say Jessica Holmes was
negligent when she left 2-year-old Atrinity Hasbell in her van
throughout the day.The little girl's mother says a change in
routine contributed to her child's death.Holmes told prosecutors that she had left that morning with
her two sons in the back seat and Atrinity was in the seat behind them.
She was supposed to drop-off all three at a Meeker day care. When
the women went to pick up their kids, day care officials say the little
girl hadn't been there. They found Atrinity still in the mini-van.The
District Attorney says although Holmes may not have intended for the
little girl to die, she should have taken more steps to keep her safe.Holmes
and Attrinity's mother are both roommates.Unfortunately, we hear
these types of stories every summer. Some advice from
KidsandCars.org -- first, be alert when your routine changes. Most of
these situations happen when a parent or caregiver has to do something
different. Also, use a teddy bear as a body double. Put it in the
front seat with you as a reminder.Another suggestion, put
something you need in the backseat with your child, such as a purse or
wallet. When your car is at home, make sure it's always locked to
prevent a child, or neighbor's child, from climbing inside. Finally,
if you notice a child in a hot car, don't assume the parent already
knows, always get involved and call 911.

Babysitter pleads guilty in toddler’s death

SHAWNEE, Okla. —
The Chandler babysitter charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of a toddler left inside a hot mini-van in Meeker last summer has entered a guilty plea in her case. Court records shows a pre-sentence investigation was ordered and formal sentencing is scheduled May 25.

Jessica Lorene Holmes, 21, is charged in Lincoln County District Court in connection with the death of Atrinity Marie Hasbell, 2.

The child was found dead in the back of Holmes’ minivan May 26 outside Tender Care Too day care, 511 S. Culver, in Meeker.

Holmes was supposed to have taken Atrinity, her roommate’s daughter, to day care with her own two children that day. She told police that wasn’t her regular routine and she forgot Atrinity was in the third-row seat in the back of the van. The child was found when the mothers went together to pick up their children at day care and Atrinity’s mother discovered her child wasn’t inside.

By “culpable negligence,” charges allege Holmes effected the death of Atrinity by leaving her in a parked vehicle for a prolonged period of time while temperatures outside reached 90 degrees.

Holmes, who was scheduled for a non-jury trial to begin this week, appeared in court with her attorney, Craig S. Key, where she entered the guilty plea.

Holmes was arrested June 3 after charges were filed in this case.

In August, Holmes tearfully spoke publicly about what happened in hopes no one else will have to go through the pain she or Atrinity’s family has endured, she said.

“It really can happen to anyone...I can’t stress it enough — take safety steps to avoid it,” she said. “I wish I would have had more knowledge.”

She also said she has learned a lot of safety precautions, such as leaving a purse, a phone or something like a Teddy Bear in the child’s car seat when not in use, then holding on to that item as a reminder until the child is taken out of the car seat.

The state medical examiner concluded the child’s cause of death was hyperthermia, which occurs when the body produces more heat than it can dissipate.

Watch for updates on this case.
