DAMARRIUS THOMAS - 2 yo -(2010) Newport (NE of Little Rock) AR
A two-year-old Newport toddler died this
weekend at a Little Rock Hospital. His father is in police custody
charged in his death.
"We haven't had a homicide here since 2006.
As far as a child abuse case this severe, it's going to be beyond my
recollection, it's 10 or more years," says Lt. Patrick Weatherford with
the Newport Police Department.
This past weekend tragedy struck. Friday
police were called to 123 Lacy Drive in Newport where they found
2-year-old Damarrius Thomas not breathing. "Resuscitative efforts were
performed they actually got the baby back, and the baby was transferred
to Arkansas Children's Hospital," says Weatherford, but Thomas died the
next day. According to investigators, he died of head trauma and a
broken back.
Meanwhile, his father Richard Ingram was
arrested and taken to the Jackson County Detention Center where he was
questioned by police. "The child has marks on his body consistent with
being struck by a belt, which Ingram admitted to, also the child has
signs of shaken baby syndrome, which Ingram also admitted that he had
shaken the baby with in the last 24 hours," states Weatherford.
Police say in 1998 a similar abusive head
trauma case took place involving a 3 month old, the man was charged with
capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. For officers, cases
like these can break their hearts. "These cases are difficult to work
not only from the law enforcement end, but also from the personal end
and having children myself to see these types of injuries to a small
child," says Weatherford.
A bond hearing was held this afternoon. Richard Ingram is charged with capital murder. He's being held without bond.

Jackson County Circuit prosecutors have charged a Newport man with capital murder in the death of his 2-year-old child.
Judge Barbara Griffin ordered Richard Ingram be held without bond during a court appearance on Monday.
Newport police officers responding to a call Friday
found Damarrius Thomas not breathing. The child was taken to a Newport
hospital then transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock
where he died the following day.
During a probable cause hearing, Lt. Patrick
Weatherford testified that an autopsy determined Damarrius suffered a
broken back, multiple deep bruises to his back, buttocks and upper legs
as well as neck injuries and catastrophic brain trauma.
It couldn't immediately be determined whether Ingram had obtained an attorney.

On Monday, Richard Ingram was charged with capital
murder in the beating death of his one-year-old son, Damarrius Thomas.
Now, Damarrius' mother Tykeisha is left with the shock of her son's
brutal murder, and the mission of finding the money to give her son a
final resting place.
Since the news of his murder, the family of Damarrius Thomas cannot figure out why anyone would want to hurt the little boy.
"I break down at night thinking about it. I've even had dreams about
the baby, you understand? It's been really mind boggling for me." said
Damarrius' Mother Tykeisha Thomas
20-year-old Tykeisha Thomas cannot afford to pay for Damarrius' funeral
and burial on her own. In an effort to raise money to bury her son,
Tykeisha stood at the corner of Natural Bridge and Jennings Station,
handing out leaflets asking for donations. Nothing is more important to
Tykeisha than finding her son a final resting place.
The donation response has been good so far, but the family is not there
yet, in their effort to say their final goodbye to this young boy,
murdered just two weeks before his second birthday.

Welcome Scorpion Love. I always like to know the whole story as often the mother is there and also abuses the child or fails to protect them. Glad to hear it's not the case this time but it's such a pity so many children are raised without a two parent loving family these days. I totally agree. A child should be safe with their father. It's shocking how brutal he was.Scorpion Love wrote: @ kiwimom he was visiting his father out of town , but what should that matter? NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – The man accused in the death of his 2-year-old was found guilty in court Friday.
According to the Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce's Office, Richard Ingram was found guilty of capital murder in the death of his 2-year-old son Friday. It took the jury just 37 minutes to convict Ingram.
Ingram was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In August of 2010, Newport Police arrested Ingram after he admitted to beating his son with a belt while trying to potty train him. Newport Police say he also admitted that he shook his son until his head flopped back and forth.
In an autopsy, conducted by Associate Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Erickson, he stated the injuries to Thomas included a broken back just below the ribcage which had caused internal bleeding. Doctor Erickson summarized this case by stating Thomas was a "brutally beaten baby" and that he had "severe deep injuries that are in distribution from the head to above the pubis."
On Friday August 13, 2010, police were called to 123 Lacy Drive in Newport where they found 2-year-old Damarrius Thomas not breathing. He was transported to Arkansas Children's Hospital where he died the next day.
