A man and a woman are in police custody after the suspicious death of a three-month-old South Side boy who died Thursday from blunt force trauma caused by child abuse.Joel Bainter was pronounced dead at Children’s Memorial Hospital at 9 a.m. Thursday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.An autopsy on Friday found Joel died of multiple injuries from blunt force trauma caused by child abuse and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.DCFS is investigating allegations of abuse against both Joel’s mother and father, agency spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.DCFS has not had prior contact with the family and there are no other children in the home, Marlowe said.A man and a woman who are considered “persons of interest” are in police custody as of 9 a.m. but no charges have been filed, according to a Wentworth Area detective.The detective declined to say what their relationship was to the infant.

The 18-year-old mother and father of a 3-month-old boy who died from abuse last week were charged today in the boy's death, police said.
Joel Bainter, of the 900 block of West 32nd Street in the Bridgeport neighborhood, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. Thursday at Children's Memorial Hospital. The Cook County medical examiner's office has said the infant died of multiple injuries and blunt force trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide.The boy's mother April Bainter, and the boy's father, Joel Ballard, both of the 32nd Street address, were charged with aggravated battery to a child and endangering the life of a child, police said.Investigators said the boy had suffered from fractures to his ribs and skull.
Kendall Marlowe, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Childrenand Family Services, said the agency was investigating allegations ofabuse by the parents.

September 14, 2010 (CHICAGO) -- Bond was set at $750,000 each for the parents of a 3-month-old Bridgeport neighborhood infant charged in connection with the boy's death last week from blunt force trauma caused by child abuse. April Bainter and Joel Ballard, both 18 of 940 W. 32nd Pl., are charged with one count each of aggravated battery of a child and endangering the life of a child, according to police. In bond court Monday, Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered them held on $750,000 each and set a preliminary hearing for Oct. 1 in South Felony Court (Br. 48) at 155 W. 51st St., according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton. Three-month-old Joel Bainter was pronounced dead at Children's Memorial Hospital at 9 a.m. on Sept. 9, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
