Dive teams searching Ohio river for missing Morenci boys

Francis X. Donnelly and Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News

Morenci— A search for three boys missing since Friday focused today on an Ohio river 20 miles away. Dive teams from several law enforcement agencies searched the St. Joseph River south of Pioneer, Ohio, police said. Several spots are being checked by the divers, said Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks. "It's not our intention to leave any stone unturned," Weeks said during a daily press briefing this morning. He said investigators are making progress in solving the six-day disappearance. "I don't believe it's a stalemate," he said. "I'm not giving up." But Weeks conceded that the number of tips flowing into his office has dropped as the case has dragged on. During the press conference, Mayor Keith Pennington said the case has overwhelmed the small town of 2,000 residents. City Hall has been closed for the week as police use it as a command center. A Christmas parade planned for Saturday was postponed, said Pennington. "We've been thrust into the national spotlight in a way few cities of 2,000 have ever experienced," Pennington said. He thanked the hundreds of volunteers who blanketed the small rural community near the Michigan-Ohio border. The Skelton boys — Tanner, 5, Alexander, 7, and Andrew, 9 — were last seen on Thanksgiving and were reported missing by their mother the following day. "We are not satisfied with the outcome…" Pennington said. "We've been very humbled in this tragedy. We are unable to fix it." Volunteer searchers are being curtailed by the end of the week, officials said. After that, searches will be conducted by police in response to tips and their investigation. The City Hall will reopen on Tuesday, Pennington said. Pennington praised the volunteers — which numbered as many as 200 on Thursday — from Morenci and the surrounding communities in Michigan and Ohio. "I thank them for everything they've done," he said. The children's father, John Skelton, is being held in Lucas County, Ohio. He faces three kidnapping charges in Lenawee County for their disappearance. Pennington said today when asked what he would like to say to Skelton, the mayor responded: "To John, if you know where they're at, please tell us." As volunteers gathered this morning for the sixth day of looking for three missing boys, most believe the Skelton boys are dead and some wonder whether their bodies will ever be found. "It's not looking too hopeful," said Quinn Parsons, 24, a Sylvania substitute teacher who joined the search at the beginning. "But I'm not giving up." Hope isn't the only thing plummeting. Volunteers endured another cold day as they traipse along roads and fields. Meanwhile, Skelton is fighting legal efforts to return him to Michigan to face the charges of parental kidnapping. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gary Cook set bond at $3 million. A $10,000 reward was offered for help in finding the boys. The source of the money wants to be anonymous, said Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks. A hobbled Skelton, sitting in a wheelchair with an ankle cast, bowed his head and didn't make eye contact with Cook during the brief hearing on Wednesday. He whispered one-word answers to a string of questions by the judge. He hurt his ankle Friday after slipping from a banister in his home during a failed suicide attempt, said police. His court-appointed attorney, Merle Dech Jr. of Toledo, declined comment on Wednesday. If Skelton's children are discovered in Ohio, he could face charges in the state, said Lucas County Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Lingo. If the charges include murder, Ohio, unlike Michigan, has the death penalty, Lingo said. Morenci is so close to the Ohio border that some roads outside it cross into and out of that state. During a press briefing Wednesday, Weeks asked residents to search their yards. Residents with large properties could receive help from the police. "We appreciate their assistance," Weeks said about the hundreds of volunteers who have been looking since Saturday. Searchers are being hampered by Skelton's lack of cooperation, said Weeks. The massive search efforts will be discontinued Friday night, said Weeks. Skelton stopped talking to law enforcement officials several days ago and, before that, told them several things that weren't true. Several areas searched by police based on Skelton's earlier comments failed to find the boys, Weeks said earlier. And Skelton also had said that he gave the children to an acquaintance so they wouldn't be home during his suicide attempt. Police later determined that the acquaintance didn't exist. Weeks said the case has attracted hundreds of tips from around the country. "If I knew where the boys were, they would be here right now," he said. A fund was established to help the boys' mother, Tanya Skelton. Donations can be sent in the name of the family to United Bank and Trust at 1050 E. Main St. in Morenci. Tanya Skelton, who hasn't spoken about the ordeal, is staying at her parents' home in Morenci. A sign on the front door asked for privacy.

I think most of us would agree that when it comes to missing children, finding them is paramount and we shouldn't allow refusal to co-operate. Give them drugs to make them talk or make the penalty for not talking the same as if they had murdered the child. I'm sick of all these cases when the suspects are allowed to lawyer up and say nothing while thousands of people search and thousands of tax payers money is spent trying to find out what the 'suspect' could tell them

A representative of the family of three missing Morenci, Michigan boys spoke to the media Thursday saying they support a decision to halt searches for the weekend. Andrew, Alex and Tanner Skelton remain missing . The brothers were last being seen Thanksgiving evening, one week ago. Kathye Herrera, the spokesperson for their family, said Thursday, “We support their decision to stop the organized search for the weekend to give volunteers the time to recuperate as well as to spend time with their own families.” “Everyone that has a child should understand what we are experiencing,” said Herrera. Full statement from the family of the Skelton boys:
"We cannot find the words to express our gratitude to those that have brought food, sent cards, called, donated money, or offered prayers. And to the schools for the use of their buses that have transported for the searches as well as the fire departments who have provided the use of their facilities, equipment and trained volunteers.
To the volunteers, that have manned stations to provide food and shelter to the searchers. And to the employers that have allowed employees time from work to volunteer. Those men and women that have actually done the searching have been tireless.
It is unbelievable to us that volunteers have come from states as far away as Texas. We know how hard everyone has been working wanting to bring [home] our precious little boys and we thank you.
Last but most importantly, a special thank you to all of the law enforcement agencies that have given more than 100 percent in their efforts to reunite our family. They have given of themselves diligently, going without sleep and being away from their own families.
We support their decision to stop the organized search for the weekend to give volunteers the time to recuperate as well as to spend time with their own families. It will give the police the chance to reflect and refocus and decide what the next steps will be for everyone. We would not want a tragedy because volunteers are too tired. So, please take this time and relax. The media has been great about getting the word out to everyone that our boys are missing, which is appreciated. We hope that the media will respect the family’s desire for privacy at this time. The focus should be on the safe return of our boys, not on us. Everyone that has a child should understand what we are experiencing."

Father confesses in missing brothers case?

Post by BJ on Fri Dec 03, 2010 4:03 am

It is now being reported by mainstream media outlets that John Skelton has confessed to killing his 3 children before attempting to kill himself.

Rumors of this have been circulating for days, but have now allegedly been confirmed by these agencies through several sources.

Police have searched an abandoned school building in Kunkel, Ohio where Skelton said he wrapped them in blankets and gave each a teddy bear, leaving them inside. A local man called police after seeing Skelton's van on the news, advising that he had seen the van in the area.

Also checked were vacant houses, several restaurant dumpsters and even a garbage dump in Bryan, as well as multiple other locations, acting on information provided by Skelton as to where he dumped the boys' bodies.

Dive teams from Michigan, Indiana and Toledo are searching the St. Joseph River, just south of Pioneer, for three missing boys from Morenci at the time of this writing.

They are also set to search another nearby rivier and gravel pit.

Morenci Police Chief advised at a press conference on November 30, based on "Statements that he's made to investigators would indicate that it's not going to be a positive outcome."

Police are said to be witholding this information currently due to Skelton giving misleading information all along.

Unfortunatley, this does bring Chief Weeks' statement that searches would be suspended at day's end Friday into perspective.

A bright note in this tragedy is the pulling together of people, near and far, as was seen in the recent Knox County case.

A candle light vigil will be held in Archbold, OH Thursday night.

One generous anonymous donor even put up a $10,000 reward for the recovery of the children. The fact that this person is doing this anonymously is evidence of a wonderful character. GOD bless you.

MORENCI, Mich. --

About 200 people resumed search efforts Friday in southern Michigan and northern Ohio for three young brothers last seen at their father's home on Thanksgiving Day as authorities prepared to use the weekend to determine what else should be done to help find the boys.

Police in the southern Michigan town of Morenci have said the organized search would be the last of the week using volunteers. Still, it's unlikely that the volunteers who have turned out will stop looking for Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5.

No news briefings were planned for Friday. Police have said investigators would follow up on tips over the weekend.

The search has consumed Morenci, a town of about 2,000 residents 75 miles southwest of Detroit, prompting the cancellation of Saturday's annual Christmas parade and shutting down City Hall so it could be used as a command center.

Much of the search in recent days has been centered on three counties in the northwestern corner of Ohio. Dive teams on Thursday dove into lakes, rivers and a gravel pit, while buses carried hundreds of volunteers to remote roads and fields.

The boys' father, John Skelton, faces three kidnapping charges and is fighting extradition from Ohio to Michigan. He remains jailed on a $3 million bond. Morenci police Chief Larry Weeks said earlier this week that Skelton, 39, has provided some information, but authorities have had no contact with him during the past few days.

Skelton's attorney at the extradition hearing has said he wouldn't comment on anything about the case. Skelton's sister, Linda Ford of Jacksonville, Fla., has said that she didn't think authorities were treating her brother fairly.

Police have said they don't expect a positive outcome.

The boys' mother Tanya Skelton, 44, reported the boys missing Nov. 26 when their father didn't return them. Police say he tried to hang himself and that he lied to investigators when he said he first gave the boys to a female acquaintance to hand over to their mother.

She filed for divorce in September. A judge gave her custody of the boys, but she and John Skelton reached an agreement on visitation.

Missing Skelton boys phoned 9-1-1 operator prior to disappearance
December 3rd, 2010 3:15 am ET

John Skelton's sister, Lucinda Ford says her brother was a doting dad before his sons disappeared, the Detroit News reported. But that doesn't take into account the 9-1-1 call they allegedly made just days prior to their disappearance, in which they feared they were home alone.According to Scripps News, an online letter posted by John Skelton to his wife on Facebook detailed how he was upstairs on the phone and their three sons mistakenly thought he wasn't in the house at all, prompting them to call 9-1-1. He told his wife in the online letter, dated Nov. 21st, that the incident happened the night before, on the 20th.The 20th fell on Saturday night, and less than a week later the boys would disappear. Scripps attempted to access the phone call record but was unable to do so with police at the time of this writing. As John Skelton is currently under investigation, it is unlikely the media will be granted public access to any data gathered at this stage of the investigation, regardless of the public record access law. Criminal case investigation integrity supersedes such accommodations; it has to in order to ensure justice is served.Law enforcement will be able to ascertain if the 9-1-1 call was met with a prompt response by patrol officers, or if John was indeed in the house and immediately followed up with the 9-1-1 operator. This will aid them in determining what was going on with the man now charged with parental kidnapping. Some schools teach children to phone 9-1-1 in an emergency and many parents reinforce that message in the home. Andrew Skelton was the son most likely to have made the call, as he had expressed a desire to grow up and be like Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks during a previous interaction with the law enforcement official--an interaction that Weeks expressed still haunts him now, USA Today reported."He said, 'Hey Chief, how ya doin'?"Morenci Police Chief Weeks then told how Andrew hustled back into the house and quickly returned with his police garb on."He said to me, 'I'm gonna be a police officer like you one day.'" And that struck a chord, as the man who has helped to search high and low for the three missing brothers said, "That's been with me ever since."The three Skelton brothers--Andrew, Alexander and Tanner--may have really been alone in their father's house on that night, just days prior to their disappearance, but we know that at least one of them may have attempted to reach out for help from the people who could give it to them: 9-1-1 operators. The missing Skelton boys' potential effort serves as an important reminder to everyone else: refresh your children's memories of what to do in an emergency situation. You never know when they might need it.

Search for Skelton Boys Called Off for Weekend
Police will use next few days to decide on their next move.
Reporter: Associated Press

Hundreds of searchers combed the southern Michigan and northern Ohio countryside again Friday for three young brothers last seen at their father's home on Thanksgiving. With the search ending unsuccessfully, authorities prepared to use the weekend to determine what else should be done to find the boys.
Morenci police had said Friday's search would be the last organized one of the week using volunteers, and fire official Bob Mohr said Friday evening that no search was planned for Saturday or Sunday.
Still, it's unlikely those who have turned out will stop looking for Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5.
The search has consumed Morenci, a town of about 2,000 residents 75 miles southwest of Detroit. Saturday's annual Christmas parade has been cancelled, and City Hall shut down so it could be used as a command center.
Much of the search in recent days has centered on three counties in the northwestern corner of Ohio. Dive teams dove into lakes, rivers and a gravel pit, while buses carried hundreds of volunteers to remote roads and fields.

The boys' mother, Tanya Skelton, 44, reported them missing Nov. 26 after their father didn't return them from a court-ordered visitation. Police say John Skelton lied to investigators when he said he gave the boys to a female acquaintance to hand over to their mother before he tried to commit suicide.
Skelton's attorney at the extradition hearing has said he wouldn't comment on anything about the case. Skelton's sister, Linda Ford of Jacksonville, Fla., has said that she didn't think authorities were treating her brother fairly.
Police have said they don't expect a positive outcome. Mohr said that if volunteers are needed to search again, officials will put out the word through the media.

On Tuesday it was learned that the father of three missing Michigan brothers will be extradited to Michigan, after he fought extradition from Ohio after his sons went missing, and after he was charged with kidnapping.John Skelton is being held on $3 million bail, $1 million for each child. Morenci Police say they have no new information in the case of the three missing boys. The children were last seen at their father's home on Thanksgiving.Michigan's Governor Jennifer Granholm received the paperwork to extradite the boy's father back to Lenawee County. She is expected to send the paperwork to Ohio in order to have Skelton brought back to Southeast Michigan.Skelton remains in jail at the Lucas County Jail charged with parental kidnapping.Police continue to ask the public to search their properties for any sign of the boys. If their properties are too large to search, police urge people to contact them for assistance.Skelton is due back in a Toledo courtroom Dec. 14.

Re: The Three SKELTON Brothers - 9, 7, 5 yo (2010) - Morenci (on OH border, W of Toledo) MI

Post by TomTerrific0420 on Thu Dec 09, 2010 3:46 am

The FBI on Wednesday interviewed a woman who believes she saw the three missing boys from Morenci, Mich., enter the donut shop where she works at the end of November.

Sandy Jones said an agent from the Cleveland office questioned her for about an hour and said the FBI would contact her Thursday about sending an artist to Sandusky to produce sketches of the three boys and woman she saw enter the House of Donuts at about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 28.

She said the FBI agent said there was no evidence the boys were dead and he hoped they were alive.

An FBI spokesman declined to comment Wednesday.

Ms. Jones said she believes the boys are the sons of John Skelton, who is held in the Lucas County jail on $3 million bond on three counts of parental kidnapping. The boys — Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5 — have been the subject of a nationwide search since they went missing the day after Thanksgiving. Authorities implied last week they were dead when they said they did not believe the case would have "a positive outcome."
But Wednesday, Mr. Skelton's parents, William and Roxann Skelton, said after talking with their son via a video connection at the jail in Toledo that they boys were safe.

Outside the jail, Mr. Skelton's parents of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. told reporters their son told them categorically the boys are well, and they believed him. They said Mr. Skelton did not say where the children were.

"He wanted me to tell you all, verbatim, his boys are safe and sound," Mrs. Skelton told reporters. "He took those boys out of harm's way, and I respect my son. He loves his children, and I respect my son for doing just that."

In Sandusky, Ms. Jones, 40, said she recognized the youngsters from media photos and that the woman with them addressed the youngest child as "Tanner" two or three times. She reported her sighting to Sandusky police, who interviewed her Saturday.

She said she observed the boys and woman for five to seven minutes. The two older boys appeared shy and even scared, while the youngest was more outgoing, she said. The woman appeared "tired" and "ragged" and looked as if she had recently dyed her hair.

She said she told the FBI agent that the boys looked healthy. She described the woman as white, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with dark short hair.

"I couldn't believe it when they walked in the door," she said. "They looked just like the missing boys. I know that since then a lot of people have stopped in the donut shop and told me they hope they're alive."

Mr. Skelton initially told authorities he gave the boys to a woman named Joann Taylor for safekeeping, but officials later said that statement had been discredited.

Mr. and Mrs. Skelton's comments Wednesday echoed statements made last week by Mr. Skelton's sister, Lucinda Ford. Ms. Ford said she believed her brother was hiding the boys in a safe location and accused their mother, Tanya Skelton, of not taking good care of the children.

She stood by those statements Wednesday, but said neither she nor her parents know where the boys are.

"They're not with me, they're not with my parents, they're not with my brother," Ms. Ford said. "I believe wholeheartedly they're safe."

Donna Galloway, the Skeltons' pastor at the Morenci United Methodist Church, said the mother and the community continue to hope that the boys will be found alive.
"I have hope, until it is taken away from me affirmatively and by fact," Ms. Galloway said. "That is because hope is necessary to be able to put one foot in front of the other."

Ms. Galloway, who visited Mr. Skelton in jail on Friday, said allegations by Mr. Skelton and his family that Ms. Skelton mistreated her sons were "outright lies" and an effort to deflect attention from the real issue of the boys' disappearance. She called on Mr. Skelton, and anyone who knows the whereabouts of the boys, to come forward with the information.

"This can be resolved in 5 minutes if John Skelton and his family — who say they know things — would tell the truth," Ms. Galloway said angrily. "I think that it is time for the answers to be given, It is time for John to man up ... It's time to end this, it's time to bring the boys home."

Morenci police officials said Wednesday they would release a statement concerning the case, but later declined to comment.

On Tuesday, Morenci police chief Larry Weeks cautioned reporters against publicizing leads in the case that had not been fully investigated.

Teacher: I may have seen 3 missing brothers

Excerpt:

A retired Morenci teacher has told authorities she may have seen the missing Skelton boys the day after Thanksgiving – just after they were reported missing – with a woman who matches a description given in an earlier possible sighting, according to a report.

The teacher said she may have seen Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, at a flea market in Ohio, WDIV-TV (Channel 4) is reporting today, quoting unnamed sources. She reportedly taught a music class to one of the boys and didn’t know until several days later than the children had been reported missing.

A Morenci Police representative this morning said he had no information on the possible sighting and could not comment.

Missing Morenci boys' dad almost arrested in September

The father of the three missing Morenci boys was threatened with arrest on parental kidnapping charges almost three months ago after he removed his sons from school for a Florida trip and suggested they may not return, according to police reports obtained by the Free Press.

The documents, obtained this week through a Michigan Freedom of Information Act request, shed light on the simmering dispute between John Skelton, 39, and his estranged wife, Tanya, 44, about a trip to Florida in September. Court records show that she filed for divorce following the trip. The report shows that police had already reviewed the parental kidnapping statute because of the Florida dispute -- months before John Skelton was charged with three counts of parental kidnapping after the boys disappeared during a Thanksgiving visit. The search for Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, has garnered national attention and prompted scores of tips. Police have said they don't expect a positive outcome. Skelton is jailed in Toledo pending an extradition hearing set for Tuesday.Police reports state that Skelton went to Morenci Elementary School on Sept. 13 and signed the boys out "for what he called a vacation to Florida.""However, while he was doing so" he "implied that the children may not be returning and that the school may need to forward the children's records," a police report said. Though the Skeltons had talked about going to Florida, the report states Tanya Skelton did not want to go and was unaware Skelton was leaving with the children. The report went on to say that police believed Skelton would be violating the parental kidnapping statute by taking the children with the intent to keep them from their mother. Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks called Skelton and told him that if he did not return, police would seek his arrest. The issue was resolved after the Skeltons met at Morenci City Hall, where Skelton told his wife where the children would be and that she was welcome to come along. Police conferred with prosecutors and determined that no crime had been committed because there was no court order for custody. On Sept. 21, an officer was called to the Skeltons' house on Congress Street in Morenci because of a domestic dispute that arose after the couple got back from Florida. Tanya Skelton's family also was at the house yelling, and was asked to clear out so the couple could talk, the report stated.A third report details a police call the weekend before Thanksgiving, when 7-year-old Alexander said he couldn't find his father. When an officer arrived at the house, an upstairs light came on and John Skelton walked into the room, saying he had told his son that he was going upstairs to call someone.

Father of 3 missing boys is arraigned in Michigan

ADRIAN -- The father of three missing boys made his first appearance Wednesday before a Lenawee County judge through a video hookup on charges that he unlawfully kept the children from their mother.

John Skelton, 39, who is charged with three counts of parental kidnapping/custodial interference, was seated in a wheelchair during the 10-minute hearing.

A video monitor in the courtroom allowed Judge James Sheridan and the defendant, who was in the county jail, to view and talk to each other. About 15 television and newspaper reporters watched a 20-inch monitor above the spectator seating area in the courtroom.

After reading the charges filed against Mr. Skelton in Lenawee County District Court, Judge Sheridan continued his bond at $30 million, or $10 million for each charge, and continued the case until Dec. 28, when a preliminary hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. Skelton told the judge that he didn't have enough money to hire an attorney and asked for a public defender.

When questioned by Judge Sheridan about his assets, he said he only had about $20 in a checking account.

According to paperwork he completed on Tuesday after he arrived at the Lenawee County jail, Mr. Skelton declared ownership of a 2000 Dodge Caravan minivan, on which he makes $100 monthly payments, and claimed no savings.

The unemployed truck driver said he must make $373 monthly child support payments to his wife and owes $55 a month on credit card debt and $50 a month on student loans.

Judge Sheridan appointed attorney John Glaser to represent Mr. Skelton.

Mr. Skelton was brought back to Michigan and placed in the jail on Tuesday after waiving extradition in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

He was arrested Nov. 30 after he was released from Mercy St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he was treated following a failed suicide attempt in his Morenci home.

His sons, Andrew, 9; Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, were last seen on Thanksgiving Day in the backyard of Mr. Skelton's Morenci home and reported missing by their mother, Tanya Skelton, the next day.

The complaint accuses him of taking or retaining for more than 24 hours each of the boys with the intent to detain or conceal them from their mother. Each offense is punishable by up to one year and one day in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Neither Prosecutor Jonathan Poer, who filed the charges Nov. 30 in district court, or an assistant prosecutor from his office was in the courtroom.

In an interview after the hearing, Mr. Glaser said he had just learned from the court that he was appointed and said his knowledge of the case was limited to media coverage.

"I don't know anything about this other than what I have read in newspapers or watched on television," he said.

Mr. Glaser, a longtime lawyer in the city, graduated from the University of Toledo college of law in 1984 and was licensed later that year to practice in Michigan. He made an unsuccessful attempt to be elected district judge in the November.

Family members of Tanya Skelton or Mr. Skelton didn't attend the hearing. However, the court session did attract a handful of spectators, including Jeff Glore and his father, Dale Glore of Morenci. Both men said they believe the boys are alive.

"I wish in a way he would tell where those kids are at," said Dale Glore, a retired janitor for Morenci Schools.

"I hoped that he would tell where the kids are at so they can bring them home," said Jeff Glore of Adrian. "For the families, I just want them home safe. I want the town to get back to normal."

Mr. Glore, a 1984 Morenci High School graduate, said he joined the hundreds of volunteers who searched in vain for the boys the week after Thanksgiving around Morenci and Ohio.

Jodi Perez of Adrian said she went to the hearing out of concern for the missing boys' family. "We just came to show support for the boys," she said.

Tanya Skelton Speaks About Missing Sons
Tanya Skelton: 'For Him To Accuse Me Hurts'

DETROIT -- Tanya Skelton spoke with Local 4 on Tuesday about her three missing sons and their father, John Skelton.
She addressed the claims John made about her abusing the children.

"For him to accuse me hurts," Tanya said.
She also talked about the time she spent in prison.
"I am a different person now," Tanya said. "My children get time outs, they don't even get spanked."
Last week, Tanya broke her silence since her sons went missing on Thanksgiving day. Sources said she had been encouraged by police to stay quiet while they interrogated her soon-to-be ex-husband John Skelton on the whereabouts of their boys.
Tanya had a message for her estranged husband:
“Everyone, not just me, not just my family, but everyone has hurt enough. Just tell us where the boys are,” Tanya said.

Vigil Thursday For Missing Morenci Brothers
Mother Says She Believes Boys Are Safe

ADRIAN, Mich. -- A candlelight vigil is planned in Adrian on Thursday for three young Michigan brothers who were last seen on Thanksgiving in the care of their now-jailed father.
The mother of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton said she still believes they're safe.
Tanya Skelton said her intuition still tells her "that my boys are alive and that they're with someone they know."
"In my heart, I have as a mom not felt that my children are gone," she said. "I feel they're out there alive somewhere. I just don't know where."
"I have bought some presents," she said. "I still have some things I want to get. It is very hard to go shopping not knowing, but there will be presents under the tree."
John Skelton is in the Lenawee County jail on parental kidnapping charges. Police say he's made false claims about turning his sons over to another woman.
The vigil is at 6 p.m. at the Trestle Park band shell.
Tanya Skelton told reporters at Morenci United Methodist Church that she wants her sons home for Christmas, The Daily Telegram and The (Toledo) Blade report.
She said she was still praying the boys are alive and unharmed and would return to unwrap their gifts.
"They are . not the typical kids who want the new toy or the latest," Tanya Skelton said. "They are happy with what they get, so Christmas is always fun because you never know what's going to be in the present and how they are going to react, but they are always smiling and happy."
"It's going to be hard if they are not home -- very quiet, emotional Christmas," she said.

I watched the interview with Tanya Skelton, in my own opinion--she really didn't act as upset as I would think a mom would. I felt she was forcing herself to cry, something was just fishy to me.

Re: The Three SKELTON Brothers - 9, 7, 5 yo (2010) - Morenci (on OH border, W of Toledo) MI

A day before he was scheduled to be back in district court in Adrian, the
father of three missing Morenci boys waived his right to a preliminary exam.
According to an official with the court, John Skelton — charged with parental
kidnapping in the disappearance of his sons — went before Judge James
Sheridan today to waive his right to the hearing. Skelton, 39, is
scheduled to be arraigned in Lenawee County Circuit Court Jan. 5.
His sons — Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, ages 9, 7 and 5 — have been missing for more than a month.
Skelton initially told investigators he gave his sons to an acquaintance before
he attempted suicide in his Morenci home, but police have said they
found no evidence the woman existed. He has also said the boys are with
an organization he has not identified.
Skelton is jailed on a $30-million bond.
Hundreds of volunteers — both citizens and fire officials from around the state
and from outside of Michigan — scoured areas of Lenawee County and
counties in Ohio searching for the boys after their disappearance. There
have been hundreds of tips and two alleged sightings in Ohio.
The boys’ mother, Tanya Skelton, 44, told the Free Press last week that she
has faith that her sons are alive and said she has been turning to
Bible passages with messages of hope — something she believes is a sign from God.
“I feel in my heart they area alive,” she said,” and
Him directing us to the word ‘hope’ tells me that we’re not to give up hope.”
