ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Eyewitness News may have solved the mystery surrounding the phantom PR man working for Casey Anthony's attorney. He calls himself "Todd Black," but that's not his real name.

A former FBI revealed to Eyewitness News that Todd Black is really Gil Cabot, a man who's spent time in prison for trying to extort money from a Los Angeles news anchor. The so-called Todd Black has been involved in the Casey Anthony case almost since the beginning.

The man who goes by the name Todd Black at Press Corps Media became defense attorney Jose Baez's public relations firm back in September. Eyewitness News went to Baez's office Monday and asked whether he knew from the beginning that Todd Black is really convicted felon Gil Cabot, but he would not answer any questions.

Baez hooked up with the phantom public relations man who goes by the name of Todd Black two months after Casey Anthony's first arrest, but the man never shows his face in public. One of Baez's partners, Jose Garcia, told Eyewitness News he's never seen Todd Black.

The public hear from Todd Black in October when he made a statement over the phone to a CNN show host.

"This is a very serious case, involving not just the loss of the life of this little girl, but the loss of whatever is going to happen with Casey Anthony," Todd Black said (hear it all).

"But I know that, based on the recording that I listened to, Todd Black is not Todd Black. Todd Black is Gil Cabot," former FBI agent Jack Trimarco told WFTV reporter Kathi Belich during a phone interview on Monday (listen to full interview).

Trimarco, a former FBI lie detector specialist, investigated Cabot in the 1980s for trying to extort money from Entertainment Tonight talent Jann Carl, who was then a Los Angeles TV news anchor.

"We recorded many, many phone conversations between Gil Cabot and Jann Carl, although Gil was always using different names and different aliases in his scheme. He eventually got arrested and was found guilty," Trimarco said.

Trimarco said someone connected to the Jann Carl case recently alerted him that Cabot, aka Todd Black, was involved in the Caylee Anthony case. When he listened to a recording of Todd Black's voice, the voice wasn't the only thing he recognized.

"But I do believe that he had used the alias Todd Black back in the 1980s," Trimarco said.

Cabot is a Tampa native and graduate of Hillsborough High School. He started out as a DJ and got involved in the music business before he got into trouble. Trimarco said Cabot uses threats and aliases to make money.

"The voice changes, the pitch changes, the inflection changes, but the bottom line is they're all Gil Cabot," he said.

Late Monday afternoon, Press Corps Media responded to Eyewitness News' question in an emailed statement (read full statement).

"It simply DOES NOT MATTER if our company was founded by a gentleman who spent time in prison over twenty-five years ago, especially since that distinction is a key selling point that brings credibility to our services assisting celebrities, politicians and others charged with a crime. It simply DOES NOT MATTER that when he sold the company in 1996 he remained a consultant, just like it simply DOES NOT MATTER that security names are assigned to our company staff," Todd Black wrote in the release.

That still does not answer the question, is he really Gil Cabot?

What is up with Todd Black? (again)

I am just so puzzled on how a law firm, (“Jose Baez”) could admit to
hiring another firm “Press Corps” (Todd Black) when it appears that the
company does not exist or is so much in hiding that it is questionable
that they even exist. Baez is saying yes they are my spokesperson; no
they are not my spokesperson. Todd Black is now we know, a fake name
but is the entire company a fake? Is it possible that Baez has cooked
this all up?

This upsets me a lot. The Florida Bar has dropped the case against
Baez. They say or agree that the so-called Press Corps was not employed
by Baez during the time they badmouthed the prosecution, yet according
to Baez they were, just before and just after the statements were made.
I have had dealings with the FL. Bar on a complaint I have made against
a Florida lawyer. One thing I know is that the bar does not do
investigations; they view the complaint documents, which can be filed
online and go no further than that. You have to supply all the
information to them. They may check a little into what you say and to
see if it is valid but that is all. I feel that there may not have been
a very strong complaint made to begin with and that is sad.

Here is what is real puzzling to me. Todd Black now says his name is
not Todd Black. When doing a telephone reverse look up the phone number
(615-254-1400) on Press Corps fax, it comes up as Aim Productions &
Management located at 118 16TH AVE., SOUTH Nashville.

Under the Secretary of States web page that corp. or company does not exist. An
old TN. Corporation listing for Press Corps also list it at the same
address. However as I have mentioned in another blog this is the
address of “Off Broadway Shoes”. The piece of land that Off Broadway
sits on is owned by “LUI NASHVILLE DEMONBREUN STREET,LLC” according to
the Davidson County - Nashville, TN property appraisers page. Sending
an e-mail to the address on Press Corps fax returned this e-mail.
“—– The following addresses had permanent fatal errors —–

(reason: 550 presscorpsmedia IS NOT ACCEPTING ANY MAIL)”.
I have to really question what true company today uses AOL for their e-mail?

Further searched brings us to a current Press Corps, (note that it
is not Press Corps Media as on the fax) and a new address of 511 UNION
STREET, Nashville. This is one humongous office building. It lists the
registered agent as “DAVID BILLINGSLEY” and a search on that brings us
to dead end. Billingsley is listed as the agent and he maybe a friend,
attorney or anyone. I will stay on this working on and off and would
love to have some help from anyone living in Nashville or anyone at all.

Think about this. Baez joined in with a non existent company that
hides its identity as well as its employees. Would you do this? Is he
just not thinking again? Is it possible that he created this whole
thing? Has anyone ever seen Todd Black? This guy could be an eighth
grader for all we know or some high school kid. I’ve been searching for
more than six hours and I’m taking a nap.

Todd Black, Jose Baez PR man in Casey Anthony case used a bogus name!

Todd Black, the guy that caused the Florida Bar investigation into Casey
Anthony’s attorney, Jose Baez, has admitted his name isn’t really Todd
Black! A spokesperson for him admitted to the Orlando Sentinel,
there is no Todd Black–but who he was they weren’t willing to say!

“In general we can tell you that it’s been standard procedure for
many years to have our company’s story reps utilize abbreviated names
for security purposes, most especially now with the Casey Anthony Case
that is overrun with hostile attitudes and serious threats that have
been generated by negative media coverage,” an e-mail from his
spokesperson stated.

Mr. Black has acted as Jose Baez spokesman through a company called
Press Corps Media. Information about this company, previous clients,
and colleagues of Black have not been attainable. Black will not take
part in face to face interviews and faxed most of his news releases,
These releases appear to be written on a typewriter. He has refused to
submit a picture of himself or to be photographed. It’s unclear where
he lives or works. Black said in a telephone interview this morning
that it is an “abbreviated” last name he’s used professionally..

The Public Relations Society of America’s code of ethics lists
“honesty” as one of its professional values, and states members must
“be honest and accurate in all communications,” and “avoid deceptive
practices. It is not typical for a spokesperson to use a fake name and
to use a fake identity raises serious ethical issues.
“To use a fictitious name flies in the face of creating a trusting
and ethical relationship with the media,” said Mackenzie, author of
Courting the Media: Public Relations for the Accused and the Accuser.
“And for anybody in the media, frankly, who covers the statements
released knowing this person’s rather charlatan behavior, I consider
that also to be unethical.”

One of the letters submitted to the Bar in the invetigation of Baez
was from Press Corps Media’s president, Peter Tillman. Both Tillman
and Timothy Chinaris, an attorney representing Baez in the inquiry,
stated that Press Corps Media was retained by a Connecticut family.
Chinaris said his client had not paid and will not pay “any part” of
Press Corps Media’s fees or expenses, and he did not know or talk with
anyone from the media company before it was retained.
The Sentinel attempted to contact Tillman by leaving a voice-mail
message at the telephone number provided on the letterhead, but Black
returned the phone call.
“He’s not interested in discussing anything with you,” Black said of Tillman.

Black wouldn’t say who the Connecticut family is and when pressed
for information about Press Corps Media and its parent company,
Arrested Media, he said, “You guys are going to waste your time
creating whatever story you want to create.”

Excuse my french, but WTF????
Can this case get any stranger–or sleazier?? First of all, why would
Baez use a spokesperson (someone that would be representing HIS law
firm) he didn’t first check out?? Are we supposed to believe he got a
random phone call from some guy who said his name was Todd Black
working for some company he wasn’t familiar with and he just said,
“Yeah, man! Thanks! You can speak for me!!” (my words not Baez’)
I’m sorry but I just don’t believe it. I don’t believe he would risk
his firm’s reputation by using someone in such a high-profile role
without knowing who he was and who he represented. Next he’ll be
telling us the family in Connecticut that paid the PR firm did so
annonymously. Give me a break.
