State Police say George Delany, 21, from Frederick, Maryland has been missing
since Saturday. According to police he was last seen in the Town of
Chili where he lives off campus with other students.

Delany's father, also named George, says his son was stressed out with school.

The senior George Delany said he drove up from Maryland, visited with his son last week in Rochester, and left on Friday.

He just learned Tuesday morning that his son is missing.

The R.I.T. student's roommates last saw the student Saturday morning.

Police say the student's car was found on Ward Road in Wayland on Sunday.
Wayland is about 50 miles south of Rochester and the Finger Lakes.

State Police spokesman said they are winding down their search for the
night but will continue to patrol the area in search of Delany.

Mother of missing RIT student: "We're just waiting and trying to stay strong"

The mother of missing RIT student George Delany says her son was
stressed out by school but would never just disappear like this.
"It was a surprise. He's been stressing out a bit, you know, the
usual student stress at college. But he seemed to be doing fine," Susan
Delany said from her home in Maryland. "We think that maybe he decided
to take a break and just head home because where his car was found is
on the way home here. That's the only thing I can speculate on."
Susan Delany is at the mercy of information that she gets from local media and the New York State Police.
"It's terrible. In fact, I feel like a zombie. I hate to admit this
but I'm at the point where I can't even cry that much. I just in such a
state, I don't know. We're just waiting and trying to stay strong, and
jump at the phone whenever it rings, and say lots and lots of prayers,"
she said.
The RIT junior went missing Saturday after leaving his off-campus
apartment in Chili. Police say he was last seen on Ward Road in Wayland
this weekend.

A possible witness
Shay Martin is one of the few people that may have seen Delany near
his ditched car. Martin was driving near his home going to pick up his
girfriend. On Saturday, while it was still light out, Martin notice a
young man carrying a tool box heading in the direction of the car.
Martin says the man looked like he had a bloody nose.
Martin says he asked the man if that was his car off the road (the
car identified as Delany's). Martin said the man said no. But Martin
says he answered so quickly and abruptly that it made Martin
suspicious.
We showed Martin a picture of Delany from Delany's Facebook page and Martin said "that looks like him."
We contacted State Police after our conversation with Martin. An investigator was scheduled to talk with him this afternoon.

The mysterious white Ford Escape
Then, there's the case of the mysterious white Ford Escape.
State Police say George Delany's car was found stuck on this snowmobile trail
just off Ward Road. Investigators say a person living nearby saw Delany
and offered him help but Delany said he already had someone on the way.

That same witness says he later saw a white Ford Escape trying to help
Delany get the car off the snowmobile trail. When he drove by later,
Delany and the white SUV were gone but Delany's car was still there.

The search
Today, State Police increased their
search efforts by bringing in a canine search and rescue team and the
state forest rangers. They plan to search the area where the car was
found along with an area about four miles away where his cell phone was
last used. Investigators tell News 10NBC his cell phone is now off.

Foul play not suspected
At this point, foul
play is not suspected. Captain Rick Allen said, “We don't know if he
couldn't get the car out and he started to walk. Maybe got disoriented
not knowing the area, not being from down here or there could be other
circumstances involved. We're uncertain at this point.”

State Police tell say Delany's told his roommates he'd be right back when he left on Saturday.

Crews plan to continue this search until sundown.

They're asking anyone with information about George Delany to call them at 398-4100.

Police Focus on Leads in Missing RIT Student Case

By: YNN Staff

State police have discontinued their physical search of the wooded area
where an RIT college student went missing and are now focusing on
following up on leads they have developed. The improved weather
helped Troopers refocus their efforts to locate 21-year-old George
Delany from the sky on Thursday. They also used dogs, focusing on the
area where Delany was last seen.Delany's car was found over the
weekend, abandoned in a field in the town of Wayland. They say the
Maryland native and RIT student, who lives in Chili, had no ties to
this area in Steuben County. "He's not familiar with this area
down here. He has no contacts or any reason to be down here. He does
make a phone call around 7:47 Saturday night. Now, it's dark. He may
have just gotten disoriented and walking around, which could put him
anywhere," said Captain Rick Allen of the New York State Police.

Rochester Institute of Technology students are getting involved to help find George Delany, the Tuscarora High School graduate who has been missing for more than a week, the Frederick News Post reports.

Delany, 21, a student at Rochester Institute of
Technology in Steuben County, has been missing since last Saturday,
when he left his off-campus house that evening.

Students have been passing out fliers in an attempt to raise awareness about Delany's disappearance. Tuesday, the campus organized a "Rally for Hope" and
have also established a Facebook page featuring Delany's picture and
updates about the search, the News Post reports.

"We want people to understand that if they see something or have
even a small piece of information, they should call the number on that
flier," said James Brigden, a Students Finding George Delany organizer,
in a news release, according to the News Post.

I wonder if the car had GPS. We get cars on snowmobile trails all the time, due to GPS. Its a big fine for a wheeled vehicle to be caught on one here.

Great support followed student’s disappearance
Posted: Sunday, April 10, 2011 3:00 am

On March 12, 2011, our classmate and our friend, RIT student
George DeLany disappeared in Wayland, N.Y. We learned this news
three days later.

Through the efforts of many people, the word that George was
missing spread along the corridor from RIT through Wayland through
Frederick, Md. to Washington, D.C.

The story was shown on the television, printed in newspapers, heard
on the radio, blogged, and socially networked. There was a Rally of
Hope at RIT. A banner was signed by the people of the Southern Tier
and sent to his family.

And the Facebook page “Students Finding George DeLany” carries
prayers and words of support from more than 2,300 people.

Now three weeks later, we remain steadfast in our hopes that George
is alive and well, and will find his way back to his family and
friends.

Please accept our appreciation for everyone who has reached out and
played a part in the search for George, especially the New York
State Police.

Remains of George DeLany, missing Rochester Institute of Technology student, found: police

Police believe they have found the remains of a missing Rochester Institute of Technology student.

George DeLany disappeared last month, launching a school-wide effort to locate the 21-year-old. A Facebook page was also created to recruit volunteers and enlist help.

A man looking for antler sheds Sunday evening found the human remains believed to be DeLany in a remote wooded area near the town of Cohocton in western New York. The medical examiner still must confirm the identification.

There was no note at the scene, nor signs of foul play, police said at a press conference Monday morning. A tool box with items belonging to DeLany was found nearby, but a cellphone he was believed to have on him has not been recovered.

Born in Maryland and described as a "great student" by a professor, DeLany's mother said he was having difficulties in school before he went missing on March 12.

"He's been stressing out a bit. You know, the usual student stress at college," Susan DeLany told the Messenger Post. "But he seemed to be doing fine."

The third-year R.I.T. student vanished after telling his roommates at his Chili, N.Y., apartment that he would be back.

He was reported missing three days later, and his car was found several miles south of his home stuck along a snowmobile trail.

A person who lived nearby told authorities they encountered DeLany the night he disappeared. The witness offered to help the student get his car back on the road, but DeLany said someone was coming to help him.

Later, the witness drove by again and told police someone with a white Ford Escape was there helping DeLany. When the person drove past a third time, both DeLany and the SUV were gone.

The car, however, was still there.

The remains police believe to be DeLany were found some two miles away.

Cohocton, N.Y. —

Authorities believe human remains found Sunday in the Town of Cohocton are those of missing college student George Delany.

The remains were found by two hikers at approximately 6:45 p.m. Sunday in a wooded area off of Campbell Road and Oil Well Hollow Road.

The remains were taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Officer for an autopsy and positive identification.

Delany, 21, a Rochester Institute of Technology student from Frederick, Md., has been missing since March 12 when he left his off-campus residence in the Town of Chili. He told his roommates he would return soon.

Delany’s vehicle was found the next day off of Ward Road in Wayland. The area where the human remains were found Sunday is just east of Ward Road.

New York State Police have planned a press conference for 11 a.m. today.

Rochester Institute of Technology students, faculty remember DeLany

Adjunct
R.I.T. faculty member Paloma Capanna reads a letter from the DeLany
family at the memorial service for George DeLany Tuesday.

Rochester —

“We will find you — don’t lose hope.” “I personally don’t know you, but
please come back soon.” “Strangers are praying — come home.”
Those pleas are just three of hundreds written on a banner for
George DeLany, the previously missing Rochester Institute of Technology
student whose remains were discovered Sunday night in a shallow
indentation near the Wayland-Cohocton town line.

DeLany was last seen March 12, the day before his car was found in
the Town of Wayland. State police in vain led massive search efforts,
but it was a landowner who found DeLany in a previously unsearched
area, two-to-three miles from the missing student’s vehicle.

Tuesday evening a crowd of approximately 75 gathered at the Schmitt
Interfaith Center for a memorial service on the R.I.T. campus to
remember their friend, classmate, and student.

“For those of you that knew George, I’m awfully sorry for your
loss. For those of you that didn’t know George, I’m sorry for your
loss, that you didn’t have a chance to get to know him,” said Mary-Beth
Cooper, senior vice president for Student Affairs at R.I.T.

Adjunct faculty member Paloma Capanna, who was active in the
“Students Finding George DeLany” organization publicizing his
disappearance, read a letter from the DeLany family. The family wasn’t
in attendance.

The letter summed up DeLany as a “nice person” who wanted to be known as a “tough guy,” despite it being against his nature.

“We are all a bit shy, and George inherited that trait,” said the
letter. “That was tough to deal with as he grew older. Once he became
involved with people, he could open up, and show the young man we loved
so much.”

Much of the conversation at the memorial service centered on the community that developed during DeLany’s disappearance.

“Over the past month, our group (Students Finding George DeLany),
with everyone here and in the community, has experienced something
special, and that’s because of George,” said R.I.T. student James
Brigden. “Not only has he built a sense of community that people work
forever to try to build, he’s built it strong ... People work a
lifetime to try to build a sense of community, and George did it in a
very small amount of time.”

R.I.T. President Bill Destler, speaking before Brigden, also
emphasized the community that had developed, and needed to continue.
“I hope all of us will dedicate ourselves to that basic idea, that
we are all a family. Those of us that need help, need to know that we
can help them,” said Destler. “We don’t know, we may never know,
exactly what happened to George. But I think we do know that we have a
responsibility to try to minimize these kinds of tragedies.

“If I’m proud of anything, I’m proud of the fact that this
community kept its vigil going, both in person here on campus and on
social networks ... I’m proud we didn’t give up hope until the very
last.”

The discovery of DeLany’s remains would seem to bring closure, but
Capanna and Brigden said they wouldn’t step back from the incident that
has enveloped them in the past month. Capanna said she and the students
will lobby to get Billy’s Law, legislation previously rejected by the Senate Judiciary Committee, back to the Senate.

The law would
create stronger sharing of information between missing persons
databases and provide grants to municipalities and states to share
information, according to an article from the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the details of the case — such as why DeLany was in
Wayland, or the official cause of death — aren’t known. To Brigden,
whatever details still unknown are irrelevant.

“We’re at the point where we have an answer for George’s family.
The details we don’t know, and there aren’t many, aren’t as important
to the students,” he said.

Others, though, such as sophomore D.J. Abele, are still curious as to what happened to their classmate.
“I’m torn. Part of me wants to know what happened. I don’t want more horrible news. I don’t,” he said.
