A man in Memphis has been convicted of murder for
beating his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter for wetting herself in a
case the prosecutor called heartbreaking.
Antonio Starks was automatically sentenced Friday to life in prison in the death of little Amilyia Oliver.
Prosecutor Jennifer Nichols told The Commercial Appeal it was heartbreaking to hear testimony from the girl's brother, now 9.
He had told authorities that Starks routinely
punished them by making them run laps in their apartment and stand
against the wall with arms outstretched for long periods. The boy also
said Starks would punch his young sister when she frowned at him.

As an accused baby killer faced a judge, a new report
highlighted the problems experts say lead to crimes against children and
other issues in the home.

Police charged Antonio Starks, 23, with first degree murder and child
abuse for allegedly killing 3-year-old Amilyia Oliver, the daughter of
his girlfriend, Nekela Oliver.

Starks told police he belt whipped the three year-old and was sorry
because he "could not take care of her." Oliver is charged with
accessory after the fact for allegedly lying to police to cover for her
boyfriend.

The latest study, just out today, reveals alarming numbers of Memphis
children are born to single mothers. Advocates say more children are
suffering the consequences, which are sometimes deadly. Child advocates
will raise a flag in honor of that murdered three year-old tomorrow.
It's just the latest tragedy in a growing number of child deaths.

Memphis police have charged a man in the weekend death of a three-year-old.



Police
charged Antonio Starks, 24, with first degree murder in perpetration of
aggravated child abuse/neglect. Additionally, police charged the
child's mother, Nekela Oliver, 29, with accessory after the fact. Investigators
said three-year old Amilyia Oliver was taken to Delta Medical Hospital
by Oliver and Starks around 12:45 Saturday afternoon. The little girl
was unresponsive when she arrived at the emergency room, and died a
short time later Officers were called to the hospital on a possible child abuse case, and both Starks and Oliver were detained for questioning. A
report from the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s office ruled Amilyia's
death a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head. Investigators
said Starks may have been the only adult with the little girl at the
time of her injuries, while her mother was at work. The incident
occurred at their home at the 400 block of Walker sometime in the
morning. Investigators said a statement to police by Oliver that a
babysitter was responsible for the abuse to the child could not be
substantiated, leading to the accessory charge. A seven-year old boy in the home has been placed in protective custody by the Department of Children’s Services.

Ya know? I could just write one story about boyfriends who kill their girlfriend's children and use it over and over and over again. Just change the name and location and it's the same story.
