ANDERSON —
A man accused of slamming a 23-month-old child into a door jamb appeared in court Tuesday and was denied bond.

The child, Christopher Jayden Agnew, died hours after being injured in May
while he was being watched by babysitter Mamie Shirley Strickland and her boyfriend in a Honea Path apartment.
Police were initially told by the sitter and her boyfriend that
Jayden had fallen out of a crib or playpen on his head. Investigators
said the child was the victim of a homicide.

The babysitter’s boyfriend, Joshua Byron Babb, 30, was charged May 10
with homicide by child abuse. He was initially jailed because of
failure to pay child support but is now being held for the homicide charge.

Babb has pleaded not guilty to the charge, said his attorney, Scott McElhannon.

In court Tuesday, McElhannon asked Judge Cordell Maddox to set a bond so Babb could be released from jail.

McElhannon said Babb had been jailed for four months with no bond and
asked for a $100,000 bond to be set along with strict house arrest and GPS monitoring.

“Josh is 30 years old; his mother is here,” McElhannon said. “He is
not a flight risk. He lives in Honea Path and has lived in Anderson
County his whole life. He is not a danger.”

Prosecutors testified Tuesday that Jayden’s injuries were more consistent
with intentional damage than an accident.

A written statement Babb gave to investigators was handed over to
Maddox in court Tuesday. The statement was not read to the court but
Maddox said the contents of the one-page statement formed the basis of
his decision to deny bond.

Maddox said Babb could reapply for a bond in two months.
