October 4, 2010
Police were called to this apartment building in Indian Brook
Nova Scotia RCMP are investigating the "suspicious" death of a three-year-old child in Indian Brook.
RCMP responded to a 911 call late Friday night reporting a child in cardiac arrest.
Matthew Peter Paul was rushed by ambulance to the Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro, where he was pronounced dead soon after. His funeral is set for Wednesday.
"An autopsy did take place Saturday afternoon by the Nova Scotia medical examiner's office. At that time the information was exchanged back to the major crime unit and we're treating the death of the three-year-old as suspicious at this time," RCMP spokesman Sgt. Joe Taplin said Monday.
Police have questioned the boy's father and his girlfriend. The girlfriend's children have been placed in the care of Mi'kmaq Family and Children's Services.
The boy's mother recently left the Indian Brook reserve and moved to Ontario.
Indian Brook is about 30 kilometres southwest of Truro and is the second-largest First Nations community in Nova Scotia.

An Indian Brook, N.S., man has been charged with second degree murder in the death of a toddler last fall.
RCMP say James Joseph Peter-Paul, 29, was arrested at his home Friday morning.
On Oct. 1, Indian Brook RCMP received a 911 call just before midnight reporting a three-year-old child in cardiac arrest.
The child, Matthew James Raymond Peter-Paul, who was known as "Tucker," was taken to Colchester Regional Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
RCMP are still not revealing the cause of death.
"When this child died back in October, the circumstances surrounding the death of this child were deemed suspicious at that time," said Sgt. Brigdit Leger. "So this matter has remained under investigation and has been actively investigated the entire time. Based on the totality of the information gathered throught the investigation, grounds were obtained to support a charge of second degre murder."
