Law & Disorder: 5 St. Johns County teens fall ill after ingesting what might be bath salts

Police say 5 St. Johns teens were hospitalized after downing substance.

Five boys between the ages of 15 and 17 in Northwest St. Johns County were taken to hospitals over the weekend after ingesting what the sheriff's office said could be a type of bath salts.

Deputies were called to a home in the 100 block of North Lake Cunningham Avenue on Saturday afternoon to try to subdue a 17-year-old who was beating his father, a report said. The teen punched one deputy in the face and threw three others off him before repeatedly being Tasered and hit with batons, deputies reported. After 15 minutes, they said they were able to subdue him and he was sent to Baptist Medical Center South for treatment.

Three other teens were found to be exhibiting similar symptoms - but didn't fight - and were sent to Baptist South. Deputies were told that the subjects had received a substance called 2C-I from another teen, also in the 100 block of North Lake Cunningham Avenue.

At the other house, deputies said they found a 16-year-old in the backyard, also out of control. The report said he told deputies he had received the substance over the Internet from China and had taken it.

He, too, was taken to Baptist South; all five were sent to Wolfson Children's Hospital for further evaluation.

Deputies said they found a bag that contained a white, powdery substance; it tested negative for methamphetamine and LSD but was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement lab for more tests.

Charges have not been filed.
