Tip Leads To New Search For Haleigh Cummings

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A new tip led to a new ground search for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings Friday and an army of deputies searched a wooded area just a few Hundred yards from her home (exclusive video | images).

Putnam County sheriff's deputies stopped all physical ground searches for Haleigh Cummings last Monday, but Friday morning Eyewitness News found a search team in Satsuma in a parking lot and followed behind them.

The tip that led law enforcement to the wooded area came in overnight.

Officers from all over, including Flagler County Fire Rescue, showed up early Friday morning to begin the search.

There were more than 70 searchers, some with walking sticks. Eyewitness News was the only TV news crew in the woods when the search began.

"We're going to move to the north, which will be to our right all the way down this road, double arms length apart. The go signal is going to be 'move,'" the search leader announced.

The group met briefly Friday morning and then lined up on a dirt road.

Haleigh Cummings has been missing for almost two weeks and, so far, no luck in tracking her down. There are new leads, though.

The FBI is investigating Misty Croslin's cousin in Tennessee about his possible role in the abduction. Croslin's cousin was in Satsuma the night Haleigh vanished and then went back to Tennessee.

Misty Croslin is Haleigh's father's girlfriend and the last one to see the 5-year-old. Friday morning, she told Eyewitness News she doesn't trust her very own family member (watch it | images).

"Why don't you trust him?" WFTV reporter Mark Boyle asked Croslin.

"I just don't," she said.

"Is their a specific reason?" Boyle asked.

"I am not going to put that on TV," she said.

"You say he's a life-time criminal. Is that true?" Boyle asked.

"He has had a lot of trouble his whole life," she replied.

Eyewitness News has confirmed that a woman called 911 in Knoxville, Tennessee a few days ago to report a possible Haliegh sighting. The woman told police she saw a man Shielding a little girl's face who looked like Haleigh while getting into an SUV.

There were also reports that Croslin's cousin and Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, got into some type of argument hours before the 5-year-old disappeared.

Eyewitness News asked Cummings about the reported argument.

"There was no fight with a cousin over a gun. I don't know where people are getting their information from, but people say a lot of things and they don't always know what they are talking about," he said.

At noon Thursday, 17-year-old Misty Croslin was escorted to a car with two detectives. She had to put out her smoke before getting into the backseat, but didn't answer any questions.

Minutes later, her boyfriend, Ronald Cummings, spoke out about her (watch it).

"I don't have any suspicions of anybody," Ronald said of Misty. "Anybody could have done anything. Obviously, if I knew what was going on, I would have my daughter."

New Searches, Larger Reward In Hunt For Haleigh


Reward Increased To $20,000 For Information About Haleigh's Whereabouts

SATSUMA, Fla. - Dozens of law enforcement personnel on Friday searched deep in woods south of the mobile home where 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings disappeared 11 days ago.

Neither that search, a result of a lead, nor a search conducted of the area where a sex offender visited after his curfew turned up anything useful, Putnam County Sheriff's Office Capt. Dick Schauland said Friday afternoon.

Investigators would not provide any specifics about either a possible sighting of Haleigh outside a Tennessee restaurant or interviews with a cousin of Misty Croslin -- the 17-year-old girlfriend of Haleigh's father and the last person to see the 5-year-old.

Family members told Channel 4 that a relative named Joe visited the Cummings' home and left hours before Haleigh disappeared.

Friday morning, Croslin told Matt Lauer on the "Today Show" that she doesn't trust that cousin and doesn't know if he's involved in Haleigh's disappearance.

"He's a criminal, pretty much," Croslin said. "He's been in trouble his whole life."

Investigators pressed for information Friday confirmed that Misty's cousin had been interviewed, but wouldn't say if they had officers in Tennessee.

"We're continuing to follow up any leads that are generated anywhere," Florida Department of Law Enforcement special agent Dominick Pape said. "All the relatives have been interviewed, and Joe is a relative."

In Tennessee last Sunday, a woman called 911 saying she saw a little girl who looked like Haleigh getting into a red Toyota Rav4 in the parking lot of a Carabba's restaurant.

The woman said it appeared that the man was attempting to shield the girl's face.

"I don't believe that she would go into a restaurant and not cry for somebody," said Teresa Neves, Haleigh's paternal grandmother. "I can only pray it was her because that means she's alive and eating well."

Knoxville police and the Florida Highway Patrol searched the area, but they could not find the vehicle.

The only major announcement at Friday's news briefing was that the reward was increased by $4,000.

"That brings the reward to $20,000 for any information regarding Haleigh's whereabouts and/or the conviction of the perpetrator of any crimes involving her," Schauland said.

Mother Pleads For 5-Year-Old's Return

With 11 days passing and no work on Haleigh, her mother said it feels like "her heart is being ripped out."

Thursday evening, both of the missing child's parents, Ronald Cummings and Crystal Sheffield, spoke out and asked for their little girl's safe return.

Haleigh's parents stood close to each other at the evening's candlelight vigil, praying for their missing daughter. They said they are not giving up on Haleigh.

After the vigil, Sheffield had a message for the person who has her child.

"I hope you're watching this every day and see how much it hurts our families, and I hope it eats your heart out your chest," Sheffield said. "She's just a baby. It's torn my heart out of my chest, and I hope it's doing the same to you."

Both Cummings' family and Sheffield's family have been sleeping in tents near the home from which Haleigh disappeared in order to be around whenever news breaks about the girl's whereabouts.

"I feel helpless, but I'm here and I'm not leaving until she's home," Sheffield said.

Earlier in the day, Cummings' girlfriend, Misty Croslin, was taken to the sheriff's office once again for more questioning. Detectives have remained tight-lipped about what was discussed with the 17-year-old.

"I hope she's telling the truth … because my kids they love her. I hope she wouldn’t do nothing to hurt them," Sheffield said.

The Sheffield family said they plan to make buttons, T-shirts and hats to try to add to the $16,000 reward for any tip that leads investigators to Haleigh.

Sex Predator Arrested; Police Say Arrest Not Linked To Haleigh's Disappearance

A registered sexual predator who lives one mile from the mobile home where Haleigh disappeared 10 days ago was arrested Thursday, but Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said there's no direct link to the girl's disappearance.

Timothy Randolph Loucakis, 50, was charged with violating the terms of his probation after officials said he was not home at 10 p.m. Wednesday night, which violated his curfew.

"We know where he was, by GPS, and we do have a team going down to that area just to do a preliminary search of that area," Hardy said Thursday afternoon.

Hardy said Loucakis was interviewed two hours after Haleigh was reported missing early the morning of Feb. 10. Deputies searched his home and checked his GPS monitoring bracelet, which showed he had not left his "home zone" during the time Haleigh disappeared.

Later that day, officers with the Florida Department of Corrections also visited Loucakis the same morning the Amber Alert being was issued for Haleigh.

"I'm not going to exclude anybody," Hardy said. "This man is a sex predator -- that means he's a dangerous individual."

Channel 4 learned that Loucakis was sentenced to five years in prison in 2001 on a conviction of promotion of sexual performance by a child and was to remain on probation with GPS monitoring until December of this year.

Hardy also confirmed Thursday that detectives received unconfirmed sightings of Haleigh in Tennessee and they have questioned a Tennessee relative of Misty Croslin -- the girlfriend of Haleigh's father who was the last person to see the 5-year-old.

"We're questioning a lot of people," Hardy said. "We have polygraphs going on as we speak."

Croslin herself was brought to the sheriff's office for additional questioning on Thursday, but Hardy said her interview was routine and she will be returned to her home later in the day.

On Wednesday, Cummings and Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh's mother, were each brought to the sheriff's office for interviews.

"As leads develop, we will always be going back to the family members," Florida Department of Law Enforcement's agent in charge Dominick Pape said. "As this case goes on and we feel the need to bring them in, we will. They've been very cooperative with us."

Having a bad feeling about this, just so worried about little Haleigh. I can't help but believe somebody in her family knows something and it's heartbreaking. I'm just praying she is found safe, and alive.

On Geraldo tonight it was stated that they found court records against a "Jeremy Miller" who might have molested Misty. Court records don't indicate Misty's name but do have her mother's name in the records. Allegedly Jeremy Miller is in prison and/or jail so I don't know what this new has to do with Haleigh missing, but maybe gives more insight into Misty???

Also, Geraldo was able to divide bio mom and Ronald Cummings on national television, let Crystal and her family voice concerns regarding his alleged drug use and alleged abuse of Haleigh and alleged abuse Crystal (when they were together). I'm sure that given what must be a highly intensified emotionally charged situation, Geraldo should have turned down the offer to report such allegations Haleigh needs her family united not divided

But the family on the mother’s side tells a much different story and a much different image emerges of Ron Cummings. Crystal, is not a fact that he was abusive to you?
CRYSTAL SHEFFIELD, HALEIGH'S MOM: Yes he was. He — when I first got pregnant with Haleigh, he punched me in the back of the head and before then, he was verbal. I mean he was just very abusive.
RIVERA: What did he call you?
SHEFFIELD: Stupid *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. You stupid *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. You *EXPLETIVE DELETED*. I mean you name it, he said it.
RIVERA: Describe when he punched you when you were pregnant.
SHEFFIELD: We were living in Leesburg at his mother’s house. And I had just found out I was pregnant. We were both doing cocaine and I stopped and I walked in the bedroom and he was doing it.
And I was like, you know, how are you gone do this in front of me after I just found out I was pregnant and I just stopped? And he got very pissed off and I had my — I was facing — I had my back turned to him. He punched me in the head and then I turned around and he kicked me off the bed.
RIVERA: And he knew you were pregnant when he kicked you?
SHEFFIELD: Yes he did. He knew.
RIVERA: And was he abusive, basically, throughout your relationship?
SHEFFIELD: The whole time. I mean his mother knew, his granny knew. His granny even told me once, um, I don’t know why you’re with him.
RIVERA: Why did you stay with him?
SHEFFIELD: Because I was scared to leave.
RIVERA: Are you frightened of him even today?
SHEFFIELD: Yes I am.
RIVERA: Why?
SHEFFIELD: Just because of all the things he’s done to me.
RIVERA: Are you fr— frightened that he’ll come after you?
SHEFFIELD: Sometimes I am. I mean he’s called and wanted me to come back several times and I have went back a couple times just to be with my kid and he was still the same and I left. It hurt to leave em but I’m not gonna put myself through that.
RIVERA: Do you believe his story about what happened?
SHEFFIELD: No, I don’t. I mean I know he loves Haleigh and — [PAUSES] — his temper, I mean it could get bad enough for him to hurt Haleigh. But I do know he loves Haleigh. Haleigh is his heart and everybody knows that.
RIVERA: Has he ever hit Haleigh?
SHEFFIELD: Um, my cousin, Candice, told me when we got down here for this incident, that, um, he come to her house — it was Ronald, Haleigh, Junior and Misty. And Haleigh bumped into him or smarted off to him and she said he just backhanded her. And she fell flat on her face on the porch.
RIVERA: Marie, you have a picture of Haleigh.
MARIE GRIFFIS, HALEIGH'S GRANDMA: Yes.
RIVERA: Do you want me to see it?
GRIFFIS: Yes. You get it.
RIVERA: Alright this is a picture, a disturbing picture, that shows Haleigh with an obvious black eye, a cut on her nose and the — a bruise that goes from the top of her left eye all the way down to the left side of her cheek.
Now I understand the school records indicate that she had an accident at school. Are these injuries the result of that accident?
GRIFFIS: Uh, that’s what we were told, that she fell at school and — or who was pushed at school by — by another child and that she fell catching the sidewalk and that was the results of it. But if you fall on the sidewalk, why didn’t her hands get skinned, her knees get skinned?
SHEFFIELD: [OVERLAP] The nurse said that all she had was a scratch on her nose.
RIVERA: So you — you — do you believe that Ron Cummings hit this child?
SHEFFIELD: I don’t know if he hit her or if she fell down or any other incident happened. But that did not happen at school. The nurse said she had a scratch on her nose.
RIVERA: And you have witnesses that he has hit this child?
SHEFFIELD: Yes.
GRIFFIS: Yes.
RIVERA: Do you believe that Ron Cummings knows who took Haleigh?
SHEFFIELD: Yes. I mean he’s told my brother and my fiancé that he knows — he’s 75 percent sure he knows where his daughter is. He said on TV that he had no enemies.
RIVERA: Is that true?
SHEFFIELD: No. He’s got plenty of enemies.
SHEFFIELD: I know when he’s really crying, that is fake.

Geraldo Rivera Banned After Interview With Haleigh's Dad


Investigators Sifting Through 1,600 Leads In Case

PALATKA, Fla. -- Tension boiled over Saturday night during an interview between the father of a missing 5-year-old north Florida girl and Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera.
Rivera's discussion with Ronald Cummings, the father of missing 5-year-old Haleigh, escalated during questioning about Cummings' private life, including allegations he abused his daughter, WJXT-TV reported.
"Never, ever have I ever hit my child," Cummings said in the interview. "Me and my child have an agreement. Daddy, daughter. She has been spanked on her behind the way DCF (Florida Department of Children and Families) says that you can take care of disciplining your children."
Rivera asked Cummings about allegations he hit Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, and whether he used illegal drugs. The line of questioning resulted in a disturbance call for Putnam County sheriff's deputies, and Rivera was issued a warning that he would be charged with trespassing if he returned.
"I knew it was going to fester and explode," said Marie Griffis, Haleigh's maternal grandmother.
Griffis then turned the focus to where both sides of the family want it to be: "Whoever has Haleigh, just bring her home."
Meanwhile, for the first time since Haleigh disappeared nearly two weeks ago, there was no official update on the investigation, although deputies were visible in the neighborhood as they continued whittling through more than 1,600 leads received.
While the official ground searches were suspended, volunteers spent the weekend looking for the missing kindergartner on horseback around the Satsuma home where Haleigh lived with her father and his girlfriend, Misty Croslin.
Both Cummings and Sheffield have pleaded for information or for whoever took the girl to bring her home. Each night, the families have help prayer vigils -- sometimes together and sometimes separately.
Stories and rumors about Croslin's cousin in Tennessee -- who left Satsuma hours before Haleigh disappeared -- and Cummings' private life have fueled a growing tension among family members.

Haleigh's Father Questioned On Past Drug Use

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- During a national television interview on the show Crimetime, featuring Geraldo Rivera, Haleigh Cummings' father, Ronald Cummings, was questioned about allegations of abuse and drug use in the past. Cummings defended himself saying he never hit Haleigh or her mother in an abusive way. Ronald said he spanked Haleigh by the Department of Children and Families' standards of disciplining a child.

However, it was questions about alleged drug use that pushed Cummings over the edge.

"What about allegations of cocaine use, meth use?" asked reported Geraldo Rivera.

"There's nothing, I do not do drugs," Ronald responded.

"You don't do drugs? What about all those arrests?" asked Rivera. "Do you work for the police, are you an informant?

""No I am not an informant; I do not work for the police," he responded.

The news crew was then chased off the property by the Cummings and his family, but before they left, Cummings made a plea into the camera for the return of his daughter.

There is a $20,000 reward for information on Haleigh's whereabouts. She has been missing for nearly two weeks after she was allegedly taken from her home in Putnam County.

Investigators Speak With Haleigh's Father Again

SATSUMA, Fla. -- The Putnam County Sheriff's Office canceled its daily news conference on Monday in the search for Haleigh Cummings.

The sheriff's office said it canceled the news conference because it had no new information or leads to share.

Haleigh, 5, was reported missing from her Satsuma home early in the morning of Feb. 10 by her father's girlfriend, Misty Croslin, 17.

Despite the canceled news conference, investigators were still hard at work in Satsuma on Monday.

Investigators spoke with two people related to the case on Monday -- Haleigh's mother's fiancé, Chad Griffis, and Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings.

Haleigh's maternal grandmother, Marie Griffis, said Chad Griffis has nothing to hide. Marie Griffis is also Chad Griffis' stepmother.

"No, no. I know his whereabouts. He lives 500 feet in front of me," Marie Griffis said.

Haleigh's paternal grandmother, Teresa Neves, said the focus should be on finding her granddaughter.

"And for people to be dragging up dirt, and trying to turn this into something that it's not…this is about Haleigh. It's all about Haleigh.

All we want is for Haleigh to come home," Neves said.

Also on Monday, a donor added $25,000 to the Crime Stoppers reward for Haleigh, Crime Stoppers Executive Director Dr. Suzanne DeWees said. The total is now up to $41,000.

Haleigh's Brother Says "Man In Black" Took Her



Tuesday, February 24, 2009 – updated: 7:36 am EST February 24, 2009PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- There were new clues in the search for 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings Tuesday morning. The family said Haleigh's younger brother may have witnessed her abduction.

"I want to find my sissy. And he said something about 'the man in black took her,'" said Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield.

The 4-year-old boy gave the description to his mother nearly two weeks after his sister disappeared from her father's Putnam County home in Satsuma on February 9.

Investigators are no longer conducting ground searches, but said they're following up on over 1,600 tips. The reward for information that leads to Haleigh's safe return is $20,000.

Tip Leads Detectives To St. Augustine In Haleigh Search

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Detectives
following a tip, searched in St. Augustine near some railroad tracks
around SR-16 and US-1, but nothing turned up. Putnam County
investigators told Eyewitness News Tuesday that an anonymous donor gave
$5,000, bringing the reward to $25,500.Volunteers continue to search
surrounding areas for the little girl.Investigators are no longer
conducting ground searches, but said they're following up on over 1,600
tips.
