In a stunning revelation, Cindy Anthony, the mother of accused child killer Casey Anthony, testified today that she is the person who searched for chloroform and other suspicious terms on her family computer. She also said the stain in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car was there when they purchased it.

Day 26 witnesses

Susan Mears

In another very brief appearance, the Orange County Sheriff's crime scene supervisor identified two pieces of evidence collected from the crime scene where Casey's daughter, Caylee's remains were discovered in December 2008.

On Wednesday, the jury saw photos of a Gatorade bottle found at the scene. Thursday morning, the actual bottle, along with a syringe found inside it, were in the courtroom and submitted into evidence by Baez.

Stephen Shaw

Next up was a familiar face, a hair and fiber expert from the FBI, who was one of the prosecution's final witnesses.

Thursday, Shaw was called to explain to the jury how postmortem root banding works, and showed what his study revealed in regards to several hairs taken from the trunk of Casey's white Pontiac Sunfire, where prosecutors contend she placed her 2-year-old daughter's dead body before dumping it in the woods.

The defense said among the hairs Shaw studied, only one had a so-called "death ring" on it, a sign of apparent decomposition.

But both sides spent the morning trying to prove whether or not the fairly new science of postmortem root banding can even be proven as reliable.

Dr. Barry Logan

A new face on the witness stand, Logan is a chemistry director at NMS Labs, in Pennsylvania. He was accepted as an expert in forensic toxicology.

Logan was brought on board by the defense to refute the air sample tests conducted by Dr. Arpad Vass at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

In his own report, Logan said those tests "lacked organization and planning, [were] poorly documented, and did not follow even minimal standards of quality control."

He also wrote in a report that a byproduct of chlorinated swimming pool water is chloroform, which would support Baez's claim that Caylee drowned.

Defense attorney Dorothy Clay Sims tried to ask Logan's opinions on Dr. Vass' test notes. But prosecutor Jeff Ashton repeatedly objected, claiming Sims was going out of the witness' area of expertise: Toxicology.

With the jury out of the courtroom, Ashton said Sims' line of questioning shifts the burden of proof to the defense.

Judge Belvin Perry agreed, warning the defense to "tread lightly."

When the jury returned, Ashton asked if Logan or his lab performs air samples. Logan replied no.

Jennifer Welch

The Orange County crime scene investigator returned for a sixth testimony.

Baez quickly asked Welch if she collected any socks or shoes belonging to Caylee. She said no, and was quickly excused.

—————————————————————————
Cindy Anthony

For the first time in the nearly three year investigation into her granddaughter's disappearance and death, Cindy said she turned to the Web for information on chloroform. She said she did so after noticing that her dog seemed sleepy.

Witnesses for the state had testified that someone had searched for chloroform in March 2008. But Cindy said she told both law enforcement and prosecutors about her own search before.

Cindy recalled conducting the search at that time, because there had been discussions at her workplace about hand sanitizer scares with children. She admitted she first searched for chlorophyll by mistake, misspelling it at first.

She did not, however, recall searching for the phrase "how to make chloroform," which was among the results one of the state's witnesses found around the same time period.

Cindy affirmed she also searched for "chest injuries" and "head injuries" around the same time after a friend of hers was in a car accident.

Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick furiously cross-examined Casey's mother.

Cindy's work records had showed her on the clock at the times of those searches. But Cindy claimed she went home early, saying she put in for more hours than she actually worked because she was a salaried employee.

As to the search for "neck breaking," Cindy said she recalled a pop-up ad containing a video of a skateboarder and a reference to "neck breaking moves."

Burdick asked if Cindy's her memory had improved since her deposition because her medication had changed. She said yes.

When asked if the computer was password protected, Cindy said she did not recall ever having to put in a password, saying it was always left on when she went to use it.

Cindy's attorney, Mark Lippman, said at a news conference Thursday that her testimony matched what was in her deposition.

"She indicated she did not research 'how to make chloroform,' she did not research 'neck breaking'," Lippman said. "She testified as truthfully as she did when she testified for the state of Florida."

—————————————————————————
Sandra Osborne

The defense then called back the Orange County Sheriff's computer examiner for more questions about the Anthonys' desktop.

Osborne identified deleted Internet files from the computer and turned them over. Baez showed her a report, but she said that was completed by Sgt. Kevin Stenger, not her.

Baez then had Osborne confirm that a password is not necessarily needed to use a computer that was left on. She said it depends on the computer's settings.

—————————————————————————
Sgt. Kevin Stenger

Stenger was then called in and asked about his report on what was found in the computer's Internet history, which both he and software developer John Dennis Bradley previously testified on during Day 13.

The defense pointed to differences in two computer reports about what was searched and deleted. Stenger said the reports are accurate, but different programs may have interpreted the results differently.

He also said the report does not show how long a page was visited, what other pages were open in other tabs at the same time, or what was done on each page by the viewer.
