Re: Trial Coverage and Discussion Only ~ Day 30 ~ June 28, 2011
Day 30 witnesses
Joe Jordan
The first witness called Tuesday morning was a former team leader of Texas Equusearch volunteers who searched for Caylee.
Jordan circled the approximate area where he and his team searched on an aerial map. It included nearly all of Suburban Drive, around the same wooded area where Caylee's remains were eventually found.
He did not find any human remains, but he did say he found a pink baby blanket in the woods. Jordan said he did not see anyone else in the area besides his team.
On his first search, Jordan said he went about five feet into the woods before he hit standing water. A second search included a dog handler, who sniffed the blanket and a nearby cooler.
—————————————————————————
George Anthony
Right off the bat, Baez asked Casey's father if he knew Krystal Holloway. He admitted he knew her both by that name and by the name "River Cruz."
During his opening statement on Day 1, Baez claimed George had an affair with Holloway.
On Tuesday, George explained that Holloway was "just another volunteer" who helped at the command center for the search for Caylee. He said he met her in mid-October 2008.
Then, when Baez asked if he was ever involved with her romantically, George quickly said no, laughing and replying, "That's very funny." He also denied borrowing money from Holloway.
George admitted going to Holloway's home, explaining that she told him and Cindy Anthony that had a brain tumor and was dying, and he went to comfort her because she had helped his family. He added many volunteers had become friends.
George also admitted sending Holloway a text message saying "I need you in my life." He explained that at that time, he needed every volunteer in his life at that time.
Baez then asked if George ever told Holloway "It was an accident that snowballed out of control," while the two were having an affair. He again denied having an affair, and then tried to bring up Holloway's questionable past before Judge Perry stopped him and told him to simply answer yes or no. George said since he did not have an affair, his answer was no.
During cross-examination, George also denied telling River Cruz that he threw Casey against a wall and asking her where Caylee was.
—————————————————————————
Cindy Anthony
Baez quickly called Casey's mother next, shifting the topic back to Suburban Drive. She said she never told private investigators to search there.
—————————————————————————
Lee Anthony
Casey's brother immediately contradicted his mother's testimony, saying that Cindy told him that she sent Dominic Casey into the woods off Suburban Drive after she received a tip from a psychic.
Lee recalled being angry, because it was the first time anyone in the family had brought up looking for a dead body, rather than trying to find Caylee alive.
Again, Lee talked about feeling left out of the loop.
During cross-examination, prosecutor Frank George asked Lee if at that time, he was still "sold on his sister's lies." He smiled, looked over to the defense tabled and replied, "Yes and no." Lee was then excused, and went to sit back down next to his mother.
—————————————————————————
Yuri Melich
The case's lead detective also quickly testified that Cindy Anthony told him about sending private investigators out to the woods off Suburban Drive.
Tuesday morning marked the sixth time both Melich and Cindy Anthony were called to testify. The only other witness called six times at that point was crime scene investigator Jennifer Welch.
—————————————————————————
Roy Kronk
All eyes in the courtroom were on the man who found Caylee Anthony as he entered the courtroom.
Kronk said he read all the meters on Hopespring and Suburban drives in August 2008.
When defense attorney Cheney Mason asked him to recall the events of Aug. 11 of that year, Kronk said he started his route alone, and came across a dead rattlesnake while going into the woods to use the bathroom.
He said he saw an object that looked like a skull, but never got closer to it than 20 or 30 feet. When two co-workers joined him later that day, he said they were too enthralled with the dead rattlesnake, and nothing else in the woods.
Kronk then said he called authorities three times, on Aug. 11, 12 and 13. The jury heard all three calls.
Kronk specified that he called a non-emergency line to Orange County Sheriff's Office, and was redirected to CrimeLine, which was handling tips in the Caylee Anthony case at the time. Kronk said he would rather not call CrimeLine, because he was a county employee.
When Mason asked Kronk what he did after making those calls, he said the first two calls were made from his home in St. Cloud at around 9 p.m., so he went to bed.
On the 13th, Kronk said he called during the day, because he wanted a deputy to come out and check out the scene. He recalled a male deputy going down into the woods and looking around, and then berating Kronk about wasting his and the county's time. That, Kronk said, was the reason why he let the matter go until December.
He also said he believed he was aware of a reward of about $250,000 to anyone who found Caylee. He acknowledged receiving $5,000 after Caylee's remains were identified.
When Kronk went back to the area in December, Kronk said he took his meter reader stick, stuck it into one eye socket of the skull to lift it up. He said he then put it back as softly as he could. Kronk said it was a horrific thing for him to find.
Mason asked him about statements Kronk allegedly made about "winning the lottery" and not letting his ex-wife know about any reward money. Kronk also admitted that he told a co-worker that the woods "would be a good place to dump a body." But he insisted that he said those things as a joke, and they should not be taken seriously.
When asked about talking to his son on the phone in 2008, Kronk said he talked to him about 12 to 15 times from November to December. He denied ever telling his son that he was going to be rich or famous.
During cross-examination, Kronk said he did not know the Anthonys personally, and had no access to the their home, car or garage.
—————————————————————————
David Dean
The defense's next witness was a meter reader who worked with Kronk in August 2008.
While on Suburban Drive on Aug. 11, Dean said he he told Kronk he thought Caylee's body might be in the swampy woods. Later, during cross-examination, he said he told Kronk, "I told you so," when he later heard that Kronk had found a skull.
When prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick asked about his statement, Dean said he recalled Casey Antony saying something about checking "close to home."
Dean said he didn't think Kronk was serious about finding a skull at first, because he did not push the matter. Dean said they did not talk about the skull at work after that, and Kronk never told him he called authorities multiple times.
The next time Dean said he heard about a skull was over the radio in December 2008. He said Kronk spoke "in a normal voice" that day when he discovered it.
Regarding the dead snake, Dean said he kept it and put it in his freezer. Orange County investigators came to collect it in December 2008.
—————————————————————————
Alex Roberts
Kronk's supervisor in 2008 said when he arrived at Suburban Drive after Kronk found Caylee's remains, he saw him smoking a cigarette.
Roberts said Kronk reported the skull in the morning, before he had read any meters. After that, Kronk had to be excused for the day.
—————————————————————————
Sgt. Dennis Moonsammy
Baez began questioning a corrections officer who worked in the section where Casey Anthony is held at the Orange County Jail, but the state objected, saying his testimony was irrelevant to the charges against Casey.
Judge Perry had to dismiss the jury for the day, telling them there was a "not-too-brief" legal matter to discuss.
After hearing Baez's examination of Moonsammy in proffer, the judge ruled his testimony, all concerning Casey's demeanor in jail, was irrelevant.
—————————————————————————
Witnesses under proffer
Judge Perry had Jose Baez question two more witnesses with the jury out of the courtroom.
Marlene Baker
Another corrections officer, Baker said she observed Casey Anthony for about a year and a half, describing her demeanor as "pleasant." Judge Perry ruled her testimony irrelevant as well.
Jesse Grund
Next, Baez called in Casey's former fiance, who recalled her telling him once that her brother, Lee, had groped her in the middle of the night.
Grund said he felt uncomfortable around Lee, and wanted nothing to do with him. Lee Anthony and Casey's parents were not in the courtroom during this testimony.
The state objected, saying Grund's testimony was hearsay. Judge Perry said he would rule on that Wednesday morning.
