Campbell River RCMP say a seven-year-old boy is dead and his father is in custody following an incident early Wednesday morning.

Police say they were called out to assist an ambulance crew at a residence in the northern Vancouver Island town on Alder Street at around 2:30 a.m. PT.

"On arrival officers determined that a seven-year-old male was suffering from serious injuries. This male was transported to hospital via ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries," said Sgt. Craig Massey.

The boy's father is in police custody and the investigation is ongoing, Massey said in a statement issued on Wednesday morning.

Police are awaiting the arrival of blood spatter experts from Edmonton to aid in the investigation.

No charges have been laid.

Neighbours say the boy and his father have lived in the house for more than six years, with no previous signs of trouble.

But neighbours told CBC News they noticed the father dancing strangely in the front yard, his son riding a bike nearby, at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

"He was acting kind of weird, maybe like he was drunk or on drugs or something," said neighbour David Tayler. "He was just dancing around, being kind of weird."

Father charged with murder in 7-year-old's death

A Vancouver Island man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his seven-year-old son.

Forty-three-year-old Brent Allen Warren of Campbell River appeared in court on Thursday afternoon.

Mounties were called to a home on Alder Street early Wednesday morning to find Warren's son Jonathan in medical distress. The boy died in hospital.

As forensics investigators surveyed the area, drips of blood could be seen on the front door of the home where Warren and his son had lived for five years. Blood splatter experts from Edmonton are being brought in to assist with the case.

Neighbours described Warren as a loving father who behaved strangely the night before his son died, flailing his arms and dancing around outside the house.

Police have yet to say how the boy was killed.

Warren remains in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Father remains in custody after son killed

A Campbell River man remains in custody facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his seven-year-old son.

At court proceedings on Monday afternoon, Brent Allen Warren, 43, was ordered to appear for an arraignment hearing on the afternoon of Sept. 12.

Police were called to assist ambulance attendants at the family's home at 2: 30 a.m. July 27. Jonathan Warren, 7, was rushed to the Campbell River Hospital suffering from serious injuries. He died a short time later in hospital. Police took his father into custody at the scene.
