Suspect in teen's murder arrested after 12-year manhunt

CANADA • Poonam RANDHAWA, 18 (1999) ~ Vancouver BC Poonam14

Twelve years after 18-year-old Poonam Randhawa was killed outside her Vancouver high school, her ex-boyfriend has been arrested in the U.S.

Randhawa was on her lunch break when she was killed by a single shot to the head on Jan. 26, 1999.

After a search that lasted for more than a decade, Ninderjit Singh was arrested Friday in Riverside County, California. He faces a charge of first-degree murder in Randhawa's death.

"I can't remember when any announcement has ever given me more pleasure," Vancouver Police Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke told reporters.

"Police always suspected the killer was Ninderjit Singh, a man she knew who had apparently been stalking her for years."

Ninderjit Singh has been wanted for the Vancouver murder of Poonam Randhawa since 1999. Aug. 23, 2011.

Investigators believe that Randhawa got into a car with Singh outside Sir Winston Churchill Secondary and then he allegedly drove her to a quiet street where her shot her and left her body.

A warrant was issued for his arrest just three days after the killing, but Singh had already flown to Los Angeles, where he has family.

In 2000, investigators staked out a San Jose apartment where he was believed to be living, but he apparently became aware of police presence and fled.

Since 2001, Vancouver police have offered a $10,000 reward for Singh's arrest. The search for the wanted man was outlined on the TV show America's Most Wanted in 1999, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined the hunt in 2008.

Police say they learned of the alias Singh was using just a few weeks ago. He was allegedly using a false social security number and working as a truck driver in Irvine, California.

But his appearance had changed so much it was hard to confirm that he was the same person who has been on the lam since 1999. The once-slender Singh had ballooned to 300 lbs., grown a beard and started wearing a turban.

"Today, he looks nothing like the 1998 photo seen in local media reports," Insp. Brad Desmarais said.

On Friday, a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over Singh's truck, issued a ticket, and took his fingerprints to verify his identity. He was arrested at his home later the same day and taken to jail in Los Angeles to await extradition.

In the time since he disappeared from Vancouver, Singh was married and now has two young children. His wife told police that she did not know his real name or that he was wanted for murder.

Desmarais says police believe that Singh's family in the U.S. and Canada has been helping him evade capture.

He estimates that the hunt for Singh has cost the Vancouver Police Department more than $500,000, but would not reveal the investigative techniques used to find the wanted man.

"It was an extraordinarily challenging investigation," Desmarais said. "The investigators in this matter were really thinking outside the box."

Randhawa's family is not speaking with reporters, but Desmarais described them as "relieved."

The family issued a statement Tuesday evening, saying they are "pleased" to hear of the arrest.

"We are forever grateful to the Vancouver Police for never giving up on us over the past 12 years. Thank you also to the American authorities for all their cooperation. We hope he will be extradited in a timely manner," the statement reads.

Vancouver police are taking a second look at the 1999 murder of teenager Poonam Randhawa, and say more charges could be on the way.

CANADA • Poonam RANDHAWA, 18 (1999) ~ Vancouver BC Poonam15
Poonam Randhawa, 18, was killed by one shot to the head in January 1999.

The 18-year-old student was killed by a single shot to the head as she was driven away from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary during a lunch break on Jan. 26, 1999. Her ex-boyfriend Ninderjit Singh was arrested in California last week on a charge of first-degree murder after a 12-year manhunt.

Now that Singh is finally behind bars, investigators are re-opening the case files in the murder investigation.

"There was only evidence at the time to lay a single charge against Singh. We are now re-examining the case in its entirety in consideration of any further evidence that would support additional charges in the case," Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness said in an email to ctvbc.ca.

She did not respond to questions about whether the alleged wheelman in Randhawa's murder could find himself facing charges more than a decade after the slaying.

A man identified as Paul Aulakh is suspected of driving while Singh shot Randhawa as she sat in the back seat of the car. Her body was dumped on a quiet street, and discovered by a neighbour 45 minutes later.

Aulakh was never charged for his alleged role in the killing.

According to court documents filed by a U.S. district attorney this week, he stowed the bloody vehicle in a garage on East 61st Avenue.

It wasn't until three days after the murder that Aulakh called police, the documents allege, but by then, Singh had fled the country for Los Angeles.

Investigators have been searching for him ever since. Police came close to catching him in San Jose in 2000, but Singh was apparently tipped off and fled before an arrest could be made.

When he was finally arrested in San Jacinto last week, investigators discovered that Singh had married and fathered two young children. He'd also gained a significant amount of weight and grown a beard, altering his appearance so drastically that police needed his fingerprints to be sure they had their man.

Investigators say they believe that Singh's family on both sides of the border wasinstrumental in his 12-year-long evasion of justice.

The accused killer appeared in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday, and said he would not fight extradition to Canada.

Accused Killer Of Indo-Canadian Teen Makes First Court Appearance In Vancouver
September 12, 2011

Poonam Randhawa’s Accused Murder Ninderjit Singh Soos Brought Back To Face Charges

CANADA • Poonam RANDHAWA, 18 (1999) ~ Vancouver BC Poonam16

VANCOUVER – There is a saying – you can run but you can’t hide for long – and that aptly applies to Ninderjit Singh Soos, the accused killer of bright young Indo-Canadian teen Poonam Randhawa, who was brought back to Vancouver to face charges.

Wearing the same blue golf shirt seen in photos from American authorities, Singh made his first appearance in B-C Provincial Court Friday morning.

A number of Randhawa’s family members were in court, just a day after Singh was brought back to Canada to face a second degree murder charge, reported CKNW news.

Speaking outside the courthouse, Randhawa’s great uncle, Avtar Randhawa, told the media the family is very upset but also feels relief Singh will face justice after almost 13 years on the run.

Singh didn’t make eye contact with the handful of Randhawa’s family in attendance and spoke only once when the judged asked him if he understood the brief proceedings.

“Yes, sir,” Singh said to the judge.

Singh was also in court on an unrelated charge of attempted murder relating to an incident in 1997.

Roger Manhas, 37, told The Province newspaper he was the victim in that incident. He said he was shot four times while sitting in a movie theatre on Kingsway.

He, too, was happy Singh had finally been arrested.

“I’m glad, finally,” Manhas said.

Singh’s next court date is on October 7th.

Singh was escorted back to B.C. Thursday morning after being extradited from the U.S., police say.

He is facing a first-degree murder charge in the 1999 shooting death of 18-year-old Poonam Randhawa. He is also charged with attempted murder in an unrelated shooting outside a Vancouver movie theatre in 1997.

Singh was arrested in California on Aug. 19 after a manhunt that lasted more than a decade. He had been living under an alias in San Jacinto, along with his wife and two young children.

He is accused of murdering Randhawa — possibly an ex-girlfriend or general acquaintance– during her lunch break at Sir Winston Secondary on Jan. 26, 1999. He allegedly shot her once in the head as she sat in the back of a friend’s car and then dumped her body on a quiet street.

The alleged killer fled the country for California immediately after the slaying, and police in Vancouver and the U.S. have been searching for him ever since.

Police have said they are taking a second look at the murder case files to see if more charges are warranted. That might include some charges against Paul Aulakh, the man driving the car in which Randhawa was killed.

A warrant for Singh’s arrest was issued three days later, apparently after Aulakh called police on the advice of a friend. But Singh had already flown to Los Angeles, where he has family.

Aulakh had stowed his bloody car in a garage on East 61st Avenue. Police have said that they are looking at all the evidence and new charges could be laid against those who allegedly helped Singh escape.

Since 2001, Vancouver police have offered a $10,000 reward for Singh’s arrest. The search for the wanted man was outlined on the TV show America’s Most Wanted in 1999, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined the hunt in 2008.

Police say they learned of the alias Singh was using in early August.
