The FBI is planning a public update on the case of a 3-year-oldLewisCountygirl who vanished more than six months ago.

The supervisory special agent in charge of the Clarksburg office,
John Hambrick, will lead a briefing Thursday in Weston with state and
local authorities.

Aliayah Lunsford disappeared from her Bendale home Sept. 24, and
there has been no sign of her since. Her mother,Lena, has told police
the child was in bed around 6:30 a.m. but gone when she checked on her
later.

Last week, Lena Lunsford's attorney said she believes there is no way her daughter wandered off.

Authorities are treating Aliayah's disappearance as a crime, but
they've named no suspects, made no arrests and refused to say what they
think happened.

The FBI held a press conference Thursday morning in Lewis County to mark six months since Aliayah Lunsford, 3, went missing.

A small crowd of community members were in
attendance. Some said Aliayah's disappearance on September 24 has torn
the Lewis County community apart.

"It's taken a really bad toll because
everybody has put their lives on hold. Every body is concerned about
this baby. When you have a missing baby and you have children or grand
children the same age, every body comes together," Patricia Rager said.

Officials said they've received about 150 tips and that two FBI agents and two state troopers work on the case everyday.

"He reassured us that it's every single day. I know that made people feel a lot better," said Margie Blake of Weston.

Despite that, investigators did not have much new to report.

They were able to dispel one theory in the case.

"We have found no evidence to support that
there was a break-in that led to Aliayah's disappearance," FBI Agent
John Hambrick said.

Investigators said the information is out there and believe that someone in the community can help resolve the case.

"If we had the evidence to make an arrest we
would," Hambrick said. "The bottom line is the judicial system is what
it is. We're held to certain standards."

Investigators also said they're looking at a ‘small universe of people' and still avoided using the word "suspects" in the case.

Hambrick wouldn't comment on the role of either Lena or Ralph Lunsford in the investigation.

"I know it's not a big update, but we want
you to know we continue to pursue this matter. If we had the evidence
to make the arrests we would," he said.

FBI investigators encouraged people to call the W.Va. Fusion Center at 866-WV-WATCH if they have an information about the case.

The FBI has offered a $20,000 reward for
information leading to the discovery of Aliayah Lunsford or the arrest
and conviction of those responsible for her disappearance.

Just days after a memorial candle lighting for lost ones in Lewis
County, extended family members of Aliayah Lunsford are planning another
one in her honor.

In two weeks, Aliayah will have been reported missing 7 months ago.
Therefore, on the night of the 24, extended family will hold a candle
lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. at the State Road Parking Lot in Bendale.

Since the three year old was reported missing, no one has been named a
suspect and investigators won't say if they believe she is still alive.
They have a working theory but won't elaborate on it.

If you have any information regarding her disappearance, you're asked to call the West Virginia Fusion Center at 304-558-4831.

ELKINS, W.Va. — The mother of a 3-year-old girl who vanished more than six months ago will be sentenced for welfare fraud next month.

U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey entered an order Thursday scheduling the sentencing of Lena Lunsford for May 22 in Elkins.

Last month, agent John Hambrick said the FBI has a theory about what happened but won't disclose details.

Lunsford pleaded guilty in January to selling $114 worth of credit on her food stamp card for $50 cash. She had been indicted on multiple counts in October, accused of swapping for cash five times in two months.

Her daughter Aliayah disappeared from their Lewis County home on Sept. 24, 2011.

Last month, agent John Hambrick said the FBI has a theory about what happened but won't disclose details. Nor would he say whether he believes Aliayah is still alive or predict when an arrest might be made.

Lunsford Sentenced

05/22/2012

Lena Lunsford was sentenced to eight months in prison and one year of probation Tuesday.

Lunsford, 29, previously pleaded guilty to federal welfare fraud charges. She was sentenced in the U.S. Northern District Court of West Virginia.

Lunsford had been charged with six counts of federal welfare fraud for selling her Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program or SNAP card. As part of the plea agreement five of those counts were dismissed. Prosecutors say she sold $114 dollars worth of welfare benefits.

The welfare fraud came to light during the FBI's investigation into the disappearance of her three-year-old daughter Aliayah. Aliayah disappeared from her Lewis Count home in September and there has not been any sign of her since. Authorities have had very few leads, no suspects, made no arrests and have refused to speculate as to what may have happened to the little girl.

Volunteer search efforts have continued, including Joe "The Bloodhound" Nick and Hunter Glass coming to West Virginia in effort to find the girl.

Lena Lunsford was facing a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 and restitution. She will report to serve her prison sentence June 28.

Aliayah Lunsford: Will Lena Talk in Prison?

ALIAYAH LUNSFORD - 3 yo (2011) - Lewis Cty/ Weston WV - Page 4 LunsfordAliayah320
Question for Readership: Will Lena Lunsford talk while in prison?
If she were to talk, Aliayah would likely receive the burial she deserves and the quest for justice can begin.

What do you think?

I am of the opinion that she will not talk. Here is why:

1. Loss of soul
Life
is more than just a ham sandwich. It profits a man nothing to gain the
whole world but lose his ability to enjoy what he has. It is like having
the perfect Prime Ribs of Beef dinner, without taste buds.

Drugs
destroy the soul. Drugs steal the ability of its victim to enjoy
anything but the momentary high and relief from depression, and even
this is a bait and switch game, where it takes more and more drugs to
obtain a lesser and lesser euphoria. This is called "tolerance."

Lena
Lunsford has used drugs for many years and eventually turned to
different drugs, including 'bath salts' which have, quite likely,
conspired with all the other drugs to leave her in a state of "zombie";
where she feels little, and simply exists. It is difficult to imagine
her being sober minded and clean, even while detoxing in prison.

The
loss of soul is also seen in the process a parent goes through, in her
mind, to be able to abuse her children. Whether or not Aliayah died of
neglect, or by way of unintended death where someone lost his or her
temper on Aliayah, Aliayah was the "pariah" or unwanted one of the clan
of children.

At an age where most children
are boundless in their energy's requirement for social life, Aliayah
was reported to have been a loner who had to fend for herself, even at
such a young age. I have met parents who boast of such "independence"
claiming they are preparing a child for life. While work is something
all children should be required to do in order to prepare them for life,
and learn to gain satisfaction from work, it must be age appropriate.
We often find neglectful parents making servants out of their children,
to satisfy their own abdicating laziness. Jaimee Chamberlain comes to
mind.

2. Depression:
Addicts
often have depression which is why they seek to self medicate. In
prison, her apathy, already a strong part of her personality, may
actually increase as she is brought three square meals a day and does
not have to take care of anyone, including herself .

3. Self Interest
In
order to Lena Lunsford to talk, it would have to be in her self
interest. Specifically by "talking", I mean official disclosure, not
conversation with other inmates which is easily discredited by defense
attorneys.
Lena Lunsford would have to be
offered something that specifically appeals to her selfishness. The deal
would have to be something enticing to her.
If the deal does not benefit her, she won't go for it.

A deal that significantly benefits Lena Lunsford would be met with an angry response from the public.

Meanwhile, Aliayah's remains continue to be open prey to the elements.
Lena
Lunsford is not likely, even under prison conditions, to talk. This is
not the norm, but should be the expected due to her extensive drug
background.
In other cases, I believe
results would have been gained had law enforcement and prosecutors
agreed in arresting suspects, whether named or unnamed, on lesser
charges. These cases include:

Baby Lisa,
Ayla Reynolds,
Hailey Dunn
Some
mothers, like "Jhyesse's mother, and Lena Lunsford, simply do not care
enough about anything to come clean. Others are hardened, like Josh
Powell and Terri Horman, though in the latter case, it should have been
attempted, in the least, on charges of attempting to hire a killer for
Kaine Horman. It would have given Desiree Young a slight hope for
justice.

Yet, in these cases, weeks turn into months, and months will turn into years, but still nothing.

Hailey Dunn case was about the most complete case of overwhelming evidence that I can recall where no arrests have taken place.

Will Lena Lunsford talk while in prison? She has been there for a few weeks now...

July 12 update:
A Lewis County woman sentenced on May 22 for welfare fraud, reported to a federal correctional institution Thursday, June 28.

Chief
Judge John Preston Bailey sentenced Lena Lunsford, 29, to eight months
in prison, followed by one year of supervised release. Lunsford pleaded
guilty on January 10 to one count of knowingly selling portions of her
SNAP benefits. Lunsford also must pay $522.82 in restitution to the
United States Department of Agriculture - Food and Nutrition Service,
according to the United States Attorney's office.

Federal
prison records indicate that Lunsford has reported to Federal Prison
Camp Alderson, located in Monroe County and Summers County. It is not
currently known if she will stay there for the duration of her sentence.
Lena
Lunsford's daughter Aliayah disappeared from the family's Bendale home
in Lewis County on September 24, 2011. The FBI has described Aliayah's
disappearance as a crime. It considers homicide and concealment as
possibilities in her disappearance.

The FBI
has offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the discovery
of Aliayah Lunsford or the arrest and conviction of those responsible
for her disappearance.

I wonder where Lena's other children are. I hope they are in a safe place and not with family that will let her or her husband see them. Otherwise they would be in danger. I hope Aliayah is found one day and justice is served to her awful parents.

It's now been ten months since Aliayah Lunsford went missing from her Bendale home.

Keeping true to their word, Aliayah Lunsford's family is having vigils on each anniversary of her disappearance.

On Tuesday, balloons were released and candles were lit- to remember the missing toddler who would be turning four this Sunday.

The vigils are held on the Bendale Bridge in Lewis County, where her scent was previously picked up by search dogs. No new clues have emerged in the case since then, and that's not sitting well with her family.

They last got an update from the FBI back in March, and that was only to say they hadn't found anything, but were still investigating.

The family wants more from law enforcement.

"More updates on what has been found and everything-if we need to keep on searching anymore," says family member Sean Smith.

Her great aunt Vickie Bowen says,"I think it would be a good idea if people that own property in the county, searched their own property. You know- just go out. You never know what you they might find."

They will be holding a birthday for Aliayah on the bridge this Sunday and ask that everyone come out.

Please call the West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center at 304-558-4831, if you have any information on her whereabouts.

It's been more than ten months since Aliayah Lunsford went missing from her Bendale home and sadly, today marks her fourth birthday.

Aliayah disappeared from her bed last September, and authorities haven't had any luck finding her.

Today, she would've celebrated turning four years-old, but this situation isn't stopping Aliayah's family from honoring her birthday.

They released balloons on the Bendale Bridge in Lewis County Sunday evening.

Authorities continue to search for Aliayah, and the FBI has asked for any help that you can offer.

There's also a 20,000 dollar reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in this case.

You can call the WV Intelligence Fusion Center at 304-553-4831 if you have any tips.

Aliayah Lunsford Missing: West Virginia Family Wants Answers In Case Of Vanished Daughter

09/22/2012

ALIAYAH LUNSFORD - 3 yo (2011) - Lewis Cty/ Weston WV - Page 4 S-ALIAYAH-LUNSFORD-largeMORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Her mother is in prison for welfare fraud. Her
stepfather is lying low. Her six siblings, some just infants, are in the
custody of child welfare authorities. And Aliayah Lunsford, the
brown-eyed 3-year-old who vanished from her West Virginia home a year
ago Monday, is still missing.

"It just seems like everybody's forgotten her," said Aliayah's great-aunt Vickie Bowen, "but we're never going to forget."

In the year since Aliayah disappeared from her family's
rented house in the Bendale section of Lewis County, Bowen has concluded
the girl is probably dead, though she avoids using the word.

"But we still need to know. We need that closure," Bowen said. "We need to take care of her."

Aliayah's mother, Lena Lunsford, told police her daughter was in bed,
wearing purple pajama pants and a pink sweat shirt, at 6:30 a.m. Sept.
24, 2011. But she said the child was missing when she checked on her a
few hours later.
Six months later, an FBI official said investigators had a working
theory about what happened – and it didn't involve a break-in. The
agency has since refused to say what agents believe happened to Aliayah
or whether they think she's still alive, though it is offering a $20,000
reward for information leading to her recovery or an arrest.

Authorities have made no arrests and named no suspects, only describing the people of interest as "a small universe."

Lewis County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. David Parks declined to discuss
details of the investigation this week and referred questions to the
FBI, which didn't return several messages. However, local authorities
have put information about Aliayah in a brochure for people attending a
hunting and fishing expo this weekend.

"It's something that stays in our minds all the time here," Parks
said. "It's not something you can forget: There's a little girl
missing."
Parks said the case is still active and tips are still coming in, though relatives complain they've had no updates in months.

"If there were more to do, we'd be doing it," he said. "Unfortunately, right now we're doing what we can with what we have."

Aliayah Lunsford's case has gotten little attention beyond the
boundaries of her small home state, failing to resonate with the public
in the way that Caylee Anthony's story did even though both girls were
toddlers with chubby cheeks and brown hair.

The body of the 2-year-old Florida girl was found a month after she
was reported missing in 2008. Anthony's mother, Casey, was charged with
murder after telling a string of lies to police but was later acquitted.

However, Aliayah's case is different in several ways: Neither the
immediate family nor the police sought national media attention.
Investigators have been tight-lipped about the case, the family and
their working theories from the start.

Aliayah's parents were also poor, and their family relationships were
splintered before the girl vanished, so there has been no prominent
spokesman.
And Aliayah has never been found, dead or alive.

The girl's mother was indicted weeks after Aliayah's disappearance on
charges she illegally swapped welfare benefits for cash five times in
two months. She was sentenced in May to eight months in prison after
pleading guilty to selling $114 worth of credit on her food-stamp card
for $50 cash and reported to prison in late June.

Attorney Mike Woelfel, who has represented Lena Lunsford in unrelated
civil matters, has said Lena doesn't believe her daughter wandered off
and has cooperated with investigators. She's also certain "no blood
relative of Aliayah knows what has happened to her," though Woelfel has
never elaborated.

Woelfel said he spoke to Lena Lunsford on Friday, and she told him she still believes "Aliayah is out there, alive."

"She's told the FBI everything she knows," he said, "so she's basically powerless to do anything other than sit and wait."

Lena Lunsford filed for divorce from her husband, Ralph Keith
Lunsford, after her daughter's disappearance, and is still waiting for
it to be finalized. She'd been ordered by a judge to live apart from
Ralph after he acknowledged buying and using synthetic drugs called bath
salts.

Both parents have repeatedly refused to comment on Aliayah's
disappearance, but in a court proceeding, Ralph Lunsford acknowledged
police had considered him a person of interest and repeatedly questioned
him in the case.

Lena Lunsford gave birth to twins after Aliayah disappeared and
before she went to prison. Bowen, their great-aunt, has never met them.
Nor does she know where the other children are.

"Until we find answers for Aliayah," she said, "there's no chance of seeing them."

After a year with no solid leads, Bowen is frustrated – but she and a
group of about 10 people still search regularly for Aliayah.
"If we hear anything, anything at all, we're there. No matter how unbelievable it seems to us, we go check it out," she said.

On Monday, Bowen and others will plant flowers near the welcome sign
in Weston to honor Aliayah. They'll distribute flyers with her picture
and post them at area businesses. They're even planning a small
afternoon demonstration at the Lewis County Courthouse.

"We're not giving up," Bowen said. "There's no way we're going to give up. A child does not simply disappear."

New Lewis County sheriff reviewing missing girl case

Posted: Sunday, January 6, 2013 2:05 pm
Updated: 2:14 pm, Sun Jan 6, 2013
by Jim Davis, Staff Writer

WESTON — In office less than a week, Lewis Sheriff Adam Gissy is familiarizing himself with the case of a missing child that has confounded county residents and law enforcement alike.

A second new year has arrived since Aliayah Lunsford disappeared Sept. 24, 2011, from her home in Bendale, south of Weston.

Gissy said he and Chief Deputy Randy Hyre are going over the case file to become acquainted with the ongoing investigation and hopefully notice something others may have missed.

“We’re going to heavily and intensively investigate and do our best to bring about some closure, if at all possible,” Gissy said.

Gissy — whose father, Mike, was sheriff when Aliayah disappeared — also will give plausible tips his full attention.

“As information comes in, it will be handled aggressively and intensively,” he said.

Federal authorities also continue to investigate the case, which they have labeled a homicide, concealment or abduction.

But FBI spokeswoman Kelly Kochamba said investigators have nothing new to report.

“We’re still investigating it actively,” Kochamba said.

Kochamba said the FBI was “dedicating the appropriate amount” of manpower to the case, but couldn’t elaborate.

“It changes day in and day out,” she said.

Kochamba also declined to discuss if there were any suspects.

Aliayah was living with her family when she disappeared almost 16 months ago. She was 3 years old, 3 feet tall and 35 pounds at the time.

Professional and volunteer search teams scoured the area for days before the FBI took over the investigation.

Searches by various groups resumed last year.

Last February, authorities released a flier with a photo showing Aliayah with her hair closely cropped and what looks like a bruise extending from below her left eye down her cheek.

A month later, FBI agent John Hambrick said the bureau had a theory of what happened to the girl, but would not elaborate.

In an unrelated case, Aliayah’s mother, Lena Lunsford, is completing an eight-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges of federal food stamp fraud.

Lena Lunsford is scheduled to be released Feb. 26 from a community corrections facility in Maryland, according to the federal Bureau of Prisons website.

Anyone with information about Aliayah should contact the FBI at (304) 624-6200 or the West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center at www.fusioncenter.wv.gov or (304) 558-4831.

Mother of missing W.Va. girl out of federal prison

02/27/2013

MORGANTOWN (AP) - The mother of a 3-year-old West Virginia girl who vanished in September 2011 is out of prison.

U.S. Bureau of Prison records showed Wednesday that Lena Lunsford was released from a Maryland facility after serving eight months for welfare fraud.

It's unclear whether she's returning to West Virginia. Lawyers who have previously worked with Lunsford won't return phone calls or emails.

Lunsford was living with her mother before she went to prison. Her mother has since died, and Lunsford filed for divorce from husband Ralph.

No one has been charged in the disappearance of Aliayah Lunsford.

Lunsford's other six children are in state care. Earlier this month, the state Supreme Court unanimously upheld a Lewis County judge's order terminating her parental rights.

CLARKSBURG — Thursday’s arrest of two people in connection with a 14-year-old Lewis County double homicide case is giving renewed hope that the Aliayah Lunsford case will be solved.

Tuesday will mark two years since 3-year-old Lunsford disappeared from her Bendale home, south of Weston. State and local law enforcement and volunteers searched the area for days before the FBI took over the investigation.

Arabelle Butcher of the Jackson’s Mill Baptist Church said she believes it is important to keep reminding the public that Lunsford is still missing, especially after recent arrests in the case of two missing Jane Lew women.

The church, located on Chapel Street, will host a candlelight vigil, along with family members, at 7 p.m. today. The Dazzling Diamonds Dance Group will perform and the Simmons Sisters will have a special tribute song. Refreshments will be served.

Lewis County Sheriff Adam Gissy is scheduled to attend, Butcher said. Anybody who would like to speak will be welcome to do so, she said.

“We need to do something to keep the story in the news so nobody forgets. We hope and pray she is still out there somewhere,” Butcher said.

In addition, a candle-lighting ceremony is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis County Courthouse, according to County Administrator Cindy Whetsell.

The public is welcome, and anyone may speak.

Meanwhile, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is once again asking for the public’s help in locating Aliayah, who would be about 5 years old now and attending school.

Bob Lowery, senior executive director of the Missing Children Division, said their records show 65 calls have been made to the hotline regarding the Lunsford case.

“We have stayed in constant contact with sheriff’s office and FBI since Aliayah went missing in 2011,” Lowery said. “Her story was featured on CNN, CBS and Nancy Grace. A lot of calls were generated by those and referred to the FBI and sheriff’s office.”

On any given day, 2,000 missing children are reported to law enforcement. There were 800,000 reported to police each year. The hotline has handled more than 3,810,000 calls, he said.

“Most are found within hours or days. We do have long-term cases like Aliayah’s that go on for years. It will continue until she is physically located no matter how long it takes. The longer it goes on, the hopes of recovering her safely do grow dim. But it does happen and that’s why we never stop looking,” Lowery said.

About 98 percent of children reported missing are found. Although some are tragic outcomes, the large percentage are found safe and reunited with families, he said.

“Someone has a piece of information that will be helpful in leading law enforcement or us to where she may be,” Lowery said. “The law enforcement follows all leads and we always maintain hope that we will find the child alive.”

The FBI is still actively investigating the case, according to Kelly Kochomba, FBI spokeswoman.

“We have a Crimes Against Children Task Force, made up of state, local and federal law enforcement partners. We work on a daily basis with these partners on all crimes against children. It is a collaborative investigation effort,” Kochomba said.

In an unrelated case, Aliayah’s mother, Lena Lunsford, is on supervised release after serving several months in prison for federal food stamp fraud.

She violated her release by associating with a male felon who professes to love her and says he is the father of the child she is now carrying, according to court documents.

The public is urged to call the 24-hour hotline 1-800-THE-LOST (843-5678) with any information concerning the disappearance or current whereabouts of Aliayah. Calls can be made anonymously.

Information also can be reported to the FBI at (304) 624-6200 or the West Virginia Fusion Center at www.fusioncenter.wv.gov or (304) 558-4831.
