Reward for Kirwan increases

The reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Amber Kirwan has increased by $10,000.
Local businesswoman Sherry Blinkhorn originally posted a reward of $5,000 for information about the 19-year-olds October disappearance, but she decided to up the amount after getting support from community members who want answers.
“I had a number of people message me to up the reward after a couple of weeks,” she said. “Today is week four and I am confident we can raise $15,000. Other business people are just as upset as I am.”
Blinkhorn said she currently has pledges for $8,000. She said she is not collecting actual cash at this time, only pledges and such pledges can be made by contacting her at blink@ns.sympatico.ca. She said people will be asked for the name, address and phone number for her own documentation and they can remain anonymous on the donor list that will be given to police.
“I’ve said before that we don’t exist in isolation,” she said. “Someone knows something about something and if anyone is sitting on the fence, go and Google her poor mother and look at her making a plea on television.”
Police are continuing the investigation into Kirwan's disappearance that occurred in the early morning of October 9 as she left a downtown pool hall and walked to a local convenience store to meet her boyfriend.

Police and forensic identification specialists attended the scene to assist in the removal of the remains and a police barricade is up, blocking access to Heathbell Road.
Police have not released a cause of death, but they do say her death is being investigated as a homicide.
The Heathbell area was the focus of an intense search last month with police dogs and ground search teams taking part, after Kirwan disappeared over Thanksgiving.
She was last seen leaving Dooly's pool hall in New Glasgow around 1:30 a.m. on October 9.
She was supposed to meet her boyfriend at Big Al's, a nearby convenience store, but Mason Campbell says she never showed up.
Kirwan was seen leaving the pool hall and walking up the street towards Big Al's in a surveillance tape released by Dooly's. But Kirwan never appears on tapes released from the convenience store.
Police, ground search and rescue teams and RCMP conducted extensive ground and water searches for clues in Kirwan's disappearance over the past month.
Campbell's car was also seized, but it has since been returned and no charges have been laid.
Police in the area continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to contact Pictou County RCMP, New Glasgow Police, or Crime Stoppers.

A small town had its worst fears confirmed Sunday as remains found on a property in Pictou County were determined to be those of 19-year-old Amber Kirwan.
RCMP would not confirm the cause of death or who owns the property.
"At this time police are treating this as a homicide," said RCMP Const. Bill Rudolph. "The remains were transported to the medical examiner's office in Halifax."
"I will let the medical examiner speak to this, but what we have been advised is that it was through visual means that [determined] it was in fact the remains of Amber Kirwan."

Investigators were executing a search warrant Saturday in connection with the disappearance of Kirwan, when human remains were found on a wooded farm property.
The property is about a half hour drive from Dooly's pool hall in New Glasgow, where Kirwan was last seen.
She had told friends Oct. 9 at about 1:30 a.m. she was leaving to meet her boyfriend, Mason Campbell, at a convenience store nearby.
Campbell told police she never came.
Campbell has been interviewed twice by police about her disappearance, and his car was seized. The couple had lived together for four months.
On Sunday morning, both ends of Heathbell Road were blocked by police.

Heathbell Road has just a few houses and a sheep farm.
One neighbour told the CBC's Shaina Luck that behind barricades there's nothing but woods and an old lane along it.
The area was searched extensively for two days about three weeks ago.

A wall that for weeks the community has gathered at to hope and pray for Amber Kirwan's safe return became a place of mourning on Sunday.
Friends and members of the community gathered to light candles and shed tears yesterday at the memorial site as word spread that the 19-year-old girl was found dead.
"It's just a sin," said one friend named Alcina. "I can't believe this could happen."
She said she knew Kirwan for about six years.
"She was the nicest person you'd ever meet. I've known her since her and Mason started dating - before that," she said fighting back tears. "They were the greatest couple ever."
Kerry Jackson went to elementary school with Kirwan and also came to light candles.
"She was sweet and kind," she said. "She'd get along with everybody."
While the news is very tragic, she said she's glad that Kirwan's remains were found.
New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan was quick to issue a statement expressing the town's grief.
"Our community is absolutely devastated and heartbroken with this terrible news. We had all hoped and prayed for Amber's safe return," MacMillan said.
"Amber has become Pictou County's daughter and the concern for her has been paramount in the hearts and minds of everyone each and every day since she went missing. Our deepest sympathies go out to Amber's parents, brother, family and loved ones. There is no greater loss than a parent losing a child. Pictou County has lost a bright light long before her time. We are in mourning as a community and it is a time of great sorrow."
Norma Green only knew Kirwan from shopping at Home Hardware where the girl worked, but when word of her disappearance spread, she volunteered to help pass out posters and every night would light candles at the wall near Dooly's.
"The community's come together with such love and compassion," she said, adding that needs to continue in the future as the family and friends grieve.
"Her story needs to be told," she said.
On social media friends wrote messages about Amber.
"I'm happy you're out of pain and misery Ambie and safe now," one friend said.
Another person wrote: "My heart is breaking today for the Kirwan family and friends of Amber ... she is Pictou (County's) Angel. She will be forever in our hearts."
Another wrote: "I am at a loss for words and my heart aches with sadness. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amber's family and friends at this most difficult time. Lord give them strength and comfort they need for these heartbreaking days that lie ahead. R.I.P. beautiful girl, you will NEVER be forgotten by all who knew you, those who didn't and the world that came together through your story."
Maria Leil Bowser and Katie McCullough, two women who have manned a volunteer centre that handed out more than 60,000 posters with Kirwan's face on them, said both the Kirwans and Mason Campbell's family are devastated by the news of her death.
"We went up to see Marj and Donnie today and we are here with Mason and Eva (Campbell) right now. Everyone is terrible."
The women made every effort possible to keep Kirwan's disappearance public, organizing poster distributions across the country, making green ribbons that symbolize hope and collecting money for the Kirwan family to use at their own discretion.
"The families are doing the best they can," said McCullough. "They are
trying to keep as much positive hope around as they can, but at the same time they are grieving for their loss. These are strong people. Marj and Donnie never gave up hope."
The women say they are unsure what they will be doing about all of the missing person posters that are currently around the county. Bowser said adecision that is in the best interest of the family will be made in the near future.
Although it is still early, Bowser added they are considering turning this tragic experience into something positive by possibly starting a missing children foundation in honour of Kirwan or holding a thank you event in the future that would also celebrate the 19-year-old's life.

RCMP Const. Bill Rudolph said the remains were uncovered in a wooded area on a Heathbell farm property.
"At this time no cause of death has been released, but we are advising the public it is a homicide investigation at this point."
Ground search and rescue crews as well as police continued to comb a blocked off section of Heathbell Road on Sunday, which is located a few kilometers outside of Lyons Brook, Pictou County.
This is the second time in three weeks a massive search has been conducted in the Heathbell area in relation to Kirwan's case.
Rudolph confirmed the general area was searched before on the weekend of Oct. 15. He said they came to search the area based on tips and their own investigation.
"It's not one of those 'ah ha' moments," he said. "It's something that builds."
He said it takes a considerable amount of time to build and process a warrant.
"There was sufficient grounds to apply to a justice for a search warrant to go onto that property," Const. Bill Rudolph said.
RCMP had the road blocked on either end of Heathbell on Sunday, stopping motorists and asking for identification before turning them around. Rudolph said the road will remained closed to thru-traffic as a long as it takes police to process the area for evidence.
When asked if Heathbell residents should be concerned about their safety, Rudolph said that was a difficult question to answer in light of the fact that they don't have anyone in custody for the murder as of yet.
"Everyone should use proper care when out and about," he said, adding he couldn't comment on whether this was a random act because the homicide investigation was only 24 hours old.
He said it was too early to say if the police had any suspects in mind.
Contrary to some rumours circulating online, there is no apparent connection between Mason Campbell and the property where the remains were found, Rudolph said.

He said for the integrity of the case the police are not disclosing what led them to the property. He could not confirm whether the home was owned or had a connection to the car that was seized Monday.
Rudolph said police seized a grey 2002 Chevrolet Impala vehicle Monday around 4 p.m. in connection with the case and it is currently being examined for evidentiary purposes. He would not say where the vehicle was seized from or who it belongs to.
Rudolph said it wasn’t a specific tip that led them to the vehicle, but rather it was part of the investigation’s totality.
He added that an autopsy was completed on a 19-year-old Pictou County girl’s remains, but they will not be releasing any details from the report.
Rudolph said the RCMP will not releasing any information that was gathered during the autopsy of Kirwan, including her cause of death, because it could compromise their investigation.
Kirwan’s remains were found in a wooded area in Heathbell Saturday afternoon and her death is continuing to be treated as homicide.
He said he doesn’t know if a $15,000 reward that was offered by the community for information leading to Kirwan’s whereabouts has been claimed.
He also stated there has been no connection made between Kirwan’s murder and the shooting death of a Trenton man two weeks ago.

Police search of home relates to homicide investigation
A mobile home located five kilometres up the Hardwood Hill Road from Lyons Brook continues to be the focus of a police search in relation to the death of 19-year-old Amber Kirwan.
RCMP Const. Bill Rudolph said a search warrant was executed on the residence late Tuesday afternoon and police investigators are expecting to be there until today.
The home, which sits on a little more than two acres of land, is located about a kilometre from the end of Heathbell Road where Kirwan’s body was discovered this past weekend. Kirwan went missing Oct. 9 from downtown New Glasgow after she left a local pool hall and walked toward Big Al’s Convenience Store to meet her boyfriend for a drive home.
Rudolph said a number of resources are on the scene, including New Glasgow Police, RCMP, police dogs and the forensic unit. An RCMP mobile command unit has been set up at the scene. Police will not comment on who lives in the residence or what items they are searching for.
Forensic officers were scouring the home’s outside property Wednesday afternoon before pulling five vehicles and the command unit into the home’s driveway. A travel trailer is located next to the home in the same lot.
Meanwhile, police are continuing to process a grey Chevrolet Impala that was seized on Monday in connection with the Kirwan investigation.
Rudolph also confirmed that as of Wednesday afternoon, there was no one in custody in relation to the case.
“This is a homicide, and in order to protect the case, we do not discuss details publicly,” he said. “We do understand there is a high level of interest and we asking for the public’s support and patience as everything unfolds.”

Heathbell man arrested on parole violation: police

Police have confirmed they arrested a Heathbell man in New Glasgow yesterday afternoon on a parole violation.
Christopher Alexander Falconer was one of two men convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of cab driver Robert LeBlanc on Heathbell Road in 1998, but he was released on full parole in May.
Falconer was 15 years old at the time of LeBlanc's murder.
Under conditions of his release, Falconer was ordered to avoid anyone known to be involved in criminal activity.
Police have not said what led to Falconer's arrest, but they have confirmed he will be transferred to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth today.
Witnesses say Falconer was walking down Brother Street when he was approached by police and patted down Wednesday afternoon. They say he was then taken away in a police vehicle.
"It was pretty quiet, he went willingly," says area resident Stephanie Fanning. "They took him and they put him in his cuffs and they put him in the car."

Car seized by police belongs to Falconer: neighbours

There is new information tonight about a car that was seized by police in New Glasgow on Monday.
Police say they seized the 2002 Chev Impala in connection with the Amber Kirwan homicide investigation, but they won't reveal who owns the car.
However, people who live in the neighbourhood where the car was seized tell CTV News the car belongs to Christopher Alexander Falconer.
"I always knew it as Chris' car…because Chris was always in the car driving around on the roads," area resident Wayne Desmond tells CTV News.
Falconer was one of two men convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of cab driver Robert LeBlanc on Heathbell Road in 1998, but he was released on full parole in May.
Chris Falconer was transferred to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth today.
Police say they arrested Falconer in New Glasgow Wednesday afternoon on a parole violation. He was transferred to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth on Thursday.
"Yesterday afternoon police arrested an adult male on Brother Street, New Glasgow as a result of a correctional service apprehension and suspension of a full parole warrant," confirms New Glasgow Police spokesman Const. Ken MacDonald.
Falconer was arrested just under a kilometre from where police seized the car on Monday, but police say his arrest is not related to the Kirwan murder investigation.
RCMP say no one has been arrested in relation to the Kirwan case.
Police have not said what led to Falconer's arrest, but under conditions of his release, Falconer was ordered to avoid anyone known to be involved in criminal activity.

"If it is deemed that there is still evidentiary value and the police still have the scene secured, the search will continue," says RCMP spokesman Const. Bill Rudolph.
Police haven't confirmed who owns the home, but neighbours say Alice Meier, the stepsister of Falconer, lives there.
The home is roughly three kilometers from where police discovered Kirwan's body on Saturday.

However, people who live in the neighbourhood where the car was seized tell CTV News the car belongs to Christopher Alexander Falconer.
"I always knew it as Chris' car…because Chris was always in the car driving around on the roads," area resident Wayne Desmond tells CTV News.
Falconer was one of two men convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of cab driver Robert LeBlanc on Heathbell Road in 1998, but he was released on full parole in May.
Chris Falconer was transferred to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth today.
Police say they arrested Falconer in New Glasgow Wednesday afternoon on a parole violation. He was transferred to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth on Thursday.
"Yesterday afternoon police arrested an adult male on Brother Street, New Glasgow as a result of a correctional service apprehension and suspension of a full parole warrant," confirms New Glasgow Police spokesman Const. Ken MacDonald.
Falconer was arrested just under a kilometre from where police seized the car on Monday, but police say his arrest is not related to the Kirwan murder investigation.
RCMP say no one has been arrested in relation to the Kirwan case.
Police have not said what led to Falconer's arrest, but under conditions of his release, Falconer was ordered to avoid anyone known to be involved in criminal activity.
Witnesses say Falconer was walking down Brother Street when he was approached by police and patted down Wednesday afternoon. They say he was then taken away in a police vehicle.
"It was pretty quiet, he went willingly," says area resident Stephanie Fanning. "They took him and they put him in his cuffs and they put him in the car."
Meanwhile, the search of a property in Heathbell in connection to the Kirwan case continues.
RCMP were back at the mobile home on Hardwood Hill Road where they first executed a search warrant on Tuesday.
They won't say what exactly they are looking for, or how long they plan to search the property, but they believe they will be there at least until Friday.
"If it is deemed that there is still evidentiary value and the police still have the scene secured, the search will continue," says RCMP spokesman Const. Bill Rudolph.
Police haven't confirmed who owns the home, but neighbours say Alice Meier, the stepsister of Falconer, lives there.
The home is roughly three kilometers from where police discovered Kirwan's body on Saturday.

A funeral service for Amber Kirwan on Saturday will be open to the public.
Mariea Leila Bowser, a spokeswoman for the Kirwan family, said parents of the 19-year-old girl whose remains were found in Heathbell last weekend, are concerned that people will believe rumours circulating throughout the county that her funeral will be a private event.
"The Kirwans want everyone to know Amber's funeral is open to the public,"she said.
She also added that rumours circulating that another memorial service will be held after the funeral Saturday are false.
"There is no memorial service planned in Carmichael Park or any park," she said.
Amber Kirwan was born in Antigonish on Aug. 21, 1992, to Donald and Marjorie (Mason) Kirwan of Stellarton.
She was a graduate of Northumberland Regional High School and was currently attending the Nova Scotia Community College in Stellarton. She had dreams of becoming a nurse and had recently been accepted into the Licensed Practical Nurse Program.
Amber Kirwan was employed with Proudfoots Home Hardware in New glasgow, where she enjoyed working with her co-workers and helping customers.
"Her family was very important to her and she never missed an opportunity to express her love," states her obituary. "Amber will be forever remembered as Liam's 'Umba', mom's 'beautiful daughter' and dad's 'little girl'."
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton, with Father Bill Rankin presiding. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.

As mourners entered Our Lady of Lourdes Church Saturday morning to lay Amber Kirwan to rest, her family sent a message that this was a time to honour her life.
Kirwan's cousin, Tara Costen, read a statement on behalf of the family prior to the start of the funeral.
"Words cannot express our heartbreak, our sorrow, or our profound sense of loss," she read from a prepared statement, as mourners entered the church, many wearing green ribbons, a symbol seen many times over the past month to mark the search for Kirwan, on their lapels.
"Amber was a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend and girlfriend." she said. "Today we remember Amber's warmth, her vitality, her love of life and the joy she brought to all of us."
Kirwan went missing on Oct. 9 and was last seen as she left Dooly's in New Glasgow, headed towards Big Al's, where she was planning to meet her boyfriend, Mason Campbell. She never arrived.
Her body was found in a wooded area of Heathbell last Saturday, sparking a homicide investigation. No charges have yet been laid in relation to the case.
Just two days before Kirwan was found, the family received an acceptance letter from the Nova Scotia Community College that signified Kirwan's desire to become a nurse was about to come true.
"Amber's acceptance to the Practical Nursing program at NSCC arrived just two days before her body was found by police," Costen said. "It was a painful reminder to us of how much promise and potential Amber had - and how much life had in store for her."
Kirwan, she said, was a warm, compassionate and caring girl who loved her family, her friends and her boyfriend.
"She worked hard, had fun, stayed out of trouble and was making plans for a bright future."
New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan recently referred to Kirwan as "Pictou County's daughter," she added.
"We are proud to share Amber's legacy with the community and we'd like to thank everyone for their support during this extremely difficult time," Costen said. "Thank you for being here today and for helping us remember a truly special girl who will never be forgotten by those who knew her - or by those who came to know her through the most tragic of circumstances."

RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Leger said Monday morning that the search of 976 Hardwood Hill Rd. in Heathbell, Pictou County, which started last Tuesday, wrapped up on Sunday evening. Leger would not elaborate on the evidence discovered at the site, saying only that the investigation continues.
Police also continue to examine two cars seized in the last week, said Leger. A grey 2002 Chevrolet Impala was seized last Monday while police picked up a blue 2008 Hyundai Elantra late Thursday evening.
Leger said police have made no arrests in connection with Kirwan's murder.
Police also say there is no connection between Kirwan's death and the murder of Eddie Phalen. Phalen, 44, was shot outside his Trenton home on Oct. 25. Leger said police continue to investigate Phalen's death and they ask anyone with information to come forward.
