Suspicious death of a 3-year-old ~ Sherbrooke QC
February 21, 2011
Officials of the Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS) are investigating the death of a 3-year-old toddler on Sunday in Sherbrooke. The mother of the child had in turn attempted to kill herself.
Police went to 947 rue Léo-Laliberté, in the borough Jacques-Cartier, at 18: 30 am, following a 9-1-1 call by a third person. According to reports, it would be a 16 year old. The latter could be the sister of the child who would have come upon the scene after the sad events.
"We found the body of a young child of three years, and a 36 year old woman who has attempted to commit suicide. She was taken to hospital where she is in critical condition, "said Martin Carrier, publicist for SPS.
The woman is now considered an important witness. She will be questioned as soon as her condition permits. According to Mr. Carter, at first sight, the child's body bore no marks of violence. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
A crime scene has been erected on the site as service forensic identification services attempt to establish the sequence of events. "All hypotheses are being considered. It could be a murder-suicide attempt. The mother could have found the body of her lifeless child before trying to commit suicide, "said Martin Carrier.

SPS waits for autopsy on toddler
February 25, 2011
Local police are still waiting for the results of an autopsy on the body of a 3-year-old Sherbrooke boy who was found dead in his Jacques-Cartier home last Sunday.
The incident began at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when the Sherbrooke police (SPS) received a frantic 911-call from a residence at 947 Léo-Laliberté Street. The 16-year-old caller, the sister of the deceased infant, is the one who made the sad discovery after she returned home.
Police rushed to the residence where they found the toddler’s lifeless body and the unconscious 36-year-old mother who had just tried to kill herself. She was quickly rushed to hospital.
According to René Dubreuil in an interview with The Record on Thursday, the status of the mother remains unchanged, as she is still in intensive care in critical condition. Police investigators are hoping she regains consciousness, as she is considered an important witness in the incident.
A number of witnesses, including friends, colleagues, and family members have been interrogated.
Police are awaiting the autopsy report to decide whether the mother killed the infant before trying to take her own life, or whether she discovered the dead body, leading her to the suicide attempt.
The dead boy’s father has pointed the finger at the woman, writing in a posting on his Facebook page that “(m)y ex-wife just killed my little three-year-old prince.”
SPS spokesperson Martin Carrier would not confirm the father's scenario earlier this week, saying that "all of the doors are still open" regarding the investigation.

Three-year-old Nathan Garneau laid to rest
March 2, 2011
The funeral of Nathan Garneau, the three-year-old Sherbrooke boy found dead in his home on February 20, was held Monday morning at the Saint-Charles-Garnier Church.
The funeral took place in the shadow of the Sherbrooke police (SPS) investigation that is still looking into the boy’s death. The SPS are awaiting the results of the autopsy report from the coroner’s office in Montreal.
The funeral was also held without the presence of the boy’s mother, who remains in hospital after she tried to commit suicide shortly following the death of her son.
Discovered next to the deceased toddler on the night in question, investigators consider the mother to be the principal witness to the incident, but have been unable to interrogate her, as she is still in the hospital’s intensive care unit in critical condition.
Without the mother’s statement or the autopsy report, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
At around 6:30 p.m. on February 20, the SPS received a frantic 911-call from a residence at 947 Léo-Laliberté Street. The 16-year-old caller, the sister of the deceased infant, is the one who discovered her brother and mother.
Police rushed to the residence where they found the toddler's lifeless body and the unconscious 36-year-old mother who had just tried to kill herself.
Investigators are awaiting the autopsy report and/or the main witness to regain consciousness to confirm whether the mother killed the infant before trying to take her own life, or whether she discovered the dead body, leading her to the suicide attempt.
Reports from the funeral on Monday indicate it was an emotional affair attended by more than 100 people. The boy’s father gave an emotional homage to his dead son, saying that he loved him and that the two would be reunited one day.
Calls to the SPS on Tuesday were not returned by press time.

Nathan Garneau case still unsolved
March 30, 2011
The Sherbrooke police (SPS) are still waiting for the report from the province's coroners office in Montreal regarding the autopsy on the body of three-year-old Nathan Garneau – the toddler found dead in his home on February 20.
It has been over five weeks since the boy and his 36-year-old mother were discovered in their Léo-Laliberté Street residence. While Nathan was deceased by the time police arrived, the mother was still breathing after having attempted to commit suicide.
According to SPS spokesperson Martin Carrier earlier this week, the mother is still in hospital in stable but critical condition. She has been lying unconscious in the intensive care unit since the day she was found.
Discovered next to the toddler, investigators consider the mother to be the principal witness to the incident. The investigation has ground to a halt however, as detectives have been unable to interrogate her due to her present condition.
With an autopsy report yet to be completed, police have not confirmed whether the mother killed the infant before trying to take her own life (this is the opinion of Nathan’s father, the mother’s ex-husband), or whether she discovered the dead body, leading her to the suicide attempt. The autopsy report should help pinpoint the cause of death.
Authorities have not divulged the injuries that the mother is suffering from, as they do want to impede the work of the investigators.

Re: CANADA • Nathan GARNEAU, 3 / Accused: Nancy Landry (mother) ~ Sherbrooke QC
snipped from French report.....
October 26, 2011 - Nathan's father, Eric Garneau says he relieved with the outcome.
"It's a relief because there were still many people, including family, who believed she had done nothing. For me, it just proved what I thought from the beginning, it's she who ended his days."
Nancy Landry was taken to the police department for questioning, then appeared before Judge Helen Fabi Wednesday afternoon. She seemed somewhat confused.
She will have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she is fit to stand trial. She will be back in court November 21.

Re: CANADA • Nathan GARNEAU, 3 / Accused: Nancy Landry (mother) ~ Sherbrooke QC
It's been reported that Nancy Landry remained in critical condition for more than 3 months and didn't regain consciousness until mid June.
Furthermore, the autopsy on little Nathan's body has never determined an exact cause of death.
