PHOENIX -- A 22-year-old man is accused of beating his 3-year-old
stepdaughter because she was back-talking and not eating her dinner.


Corey Rasean Daniels was charged with four counts of child abuse
after Phoenix police say he severely beat the child with his fists and a
belt.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a home near 48th Street and
Warner Road late Thursday afternoon and found the child unresponsive.

The girl was transported to a local hospital. Doctors said she had
multiple skull fractures, bruises, retinal hemorrhages, and bleeding and
swelling in the brain. She is listed in extremely critical condition.

Detectives learned that Daniels was taking care of the child while her mother was at work.

According to court documents, Daniels admitted punching her in the chest, arms and legs.

Daniels told police he struck the girl because she did not want to eat her hot dog and was back-talking.

A 3-year-old Phoenix girl who was savagely beaten after refusing to eat a hot dog has died of her injuries, police said Sunday.

Dani Mayo was covered in bruises from head to toe, they said. She had
multiple skull fractures, retinal hemorrhages, bleeding in the brain
and bite marks on her buttocks.

Fire Department personnel who responded to a call Thursday in the
4700 block of East Warner Road said at the time that the girl’s chances
of survival were “dismal.” She died Saturday.

“The detectives told me it was one of worst cases they have seen, and
these are seasoned detectives,” police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said Sunday.

Dani’s stepfather, Corey Daniels, 22, was booked on four counts of
suspicion of child abuse Thursday but now is expected to face a murder
charge, Thompson said.

According to court documents, Daniels told investigators he punished
the girl for refusing to eat the food he prepared, beginning with his
fists and switching to a belt, lashing her more than 36 times, even
after she had fallen to the ground.

Police said Daniels, who is unemployed, had previously beaten and bitten the child.

The girl’s mother was working Thursday during the fatal beating, police said.

What an awful brutal killer. I pray that this man would get the death penalty or at least life. I hope he's not allowed out of jail as he will abuse and kill again.

PHOENIX - The grandfather of a 3-year-old girl is picking out a
casket in one of the most brutal cases of child abuse we've seen.
The toddler died in a horrific way, allegedly at the hands of her stepfather.
But Thursday, the unthinkable happened to 3-year-old Dani Mayo at the family's apartment.
Police
say while her mother was at work, the girl's stepfather, 20-year-old
Corey Daniels, beat her nearly to death. Court paperwork describes his
sickening attack on the girl, all because she didn't want to eat a hot
dog.
When she was hospitalized, the girl was covered with bruises
from head to toe. She had multiple skull fractures and bleeding to the
brain.
Her stepdad admitted to beating the toddler repeatedly using his fists and a belt, according to police.
After two days in the intensive care unit, little Dani passed away.
Dani's
grandfather is making arrangements to bury the little girl this
Saturday. He says the family is devastated, numb with grief.
Dani's mother, Ambreatte, is 8 months pregnant. She is so upset over her daughter's murder she's been hospitalized.
Ambreatte had been married to the suspect for about 6 months according to court paperwork.

A 23-year-old Ahwatukee woman was arrested Monday in connection with the beating death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Police found photos on Ambreatte Daniels' cellphone that showed the
injuries suffered by her daughter, Dani Mayo, who was physically abused
by her stepfather, 22-year-old Corey Daniels, according to Maricopa
County Superior Court documents.

Ahwatukee girl dies following beating

Between Sept. 3 and Oct. 27, police suspect that Ambreatte knew that
Corey was physically abusing her child, according to the court documents.
Authorities said they believe Ambreatte took the photos of her
daughter's injuries and stored them on her cellphone. The photos were
discovered by police after they served a search warrant on Ambreatte's
cellphone, according to the documents. The dates on the photos were from
Sept. 3 through Oct. 13.

A text message conversation between Ambreatte and Corey was also
discovered and showed that Ambreatte knew that Corey was physically
abusing Dani, according to the documents. The text message conversation
from Oct. 7 mentioned Corey's abuse of Dani and leaving bruises and bite
marks on the girl.

Corey also asked Ambreatte where the duct tape was so he could tape
Dani's hands together in front of her before he spanked her, according
to the documents. Ambreatte told Corey not to use the belt on Dani,
police said. Police have concluded the mother knew about the abuse but
did nothing to take the girl out of that environment, according to the
documents.

On Oct. 27, Ambreatte told police she knew that Corey whipped Dani
with a belt as his form of discipline, according to the documents.

The same day, fire personnel responded to a call in the 4700 block of
East Warner Road in Ahwatukee. Rescuers discovered that Dani suffered
multiple skull fractures, retinal hemorrhages, bleeding in the brain,
bite marks on her buttocks and was covered in bruises from head to toe.

Dani died of her injuries on Oct. 28, according to the documents.

An autopsy performed on Dani showed she had multiple blunt force
trauma injuries and brain swelling. A doctor also noted extensive
bruising in different stages of healing.

Corey told investigators he punished Dani after she refused to eat a
hot dog, police said. He began using his fists and later switched to a
belt, lashing her more than 36 times even after she fell to the ground,
according to court documents.

Corey Daniels was booked on four counts of suspicion of child abuse,
but now is expected to face a murder charge, Thompson said.

Ambreatte was working during the fatal beating, police said.
