A Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy could face suspension and a pay cut over the search for a missing girl who turned up dead.

Seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera
was missing for nearly three days before investigators found her in a
Dumpster earlier this month. She was raped, stabbed and beaten by a
maintenance worker, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"I'm very disappointed that I have to stand here and discipline this police officer," said Sheriff Roger Garrison.
The
deputy faces a 36 hour suspension and will get a five percent pay cut
for one year after a mistake he made with a trainee during the search
for Rivera. Authorities said the pair cleared a vacant apartment at the
River Edge Apartment complex that turned out to be where Rivera was
killed. Neither told anyone about the blood they saw inside, Garrison
said.

Ryan Brunn, the man that was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in the murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, revealed graphic details about the day he killed her.


On Dec. 2, Brunn said he saw Rivera playing on the playground at the apartment complex where he lived and worked as a maintenance man.

Brunn said he had seen Rivera roller skating around the apartment complex, but never talked to her. Brunn took one of the skates from outside the girl's building and planted it in the vacant unit. He said he then took a picture of the skate, and when Rivera returned to her building, he asked her if it was hers.

Brunn said Rivera followed him to the empty unit and saw her skate inside. Brunn then shut the door behind them and told the girl to lay down on the floor and perform a sexual act on herself.

According to Brunn, Rivera then said she had to go to the bathroom and Brunn followed her there. He said he began to get nervous because the 7-year-old asked when she would be able to go home.

Brunn said he then told Rivera to lay down in the bathtub and he tied her hands together and duct taped her mouth shut. He again told her to perform a sexual act on herself.. Moments later, Brunn said he "freaked out" and cut her throat with a razor blade. He then said he got the skate and hit her five times on the head with it.

Brunn said he put the girl's body in a bag, put her in a trash compactor on the property and clocked out of work.

Over the weekend he hung out with friends, smoked pot, and watched football.

By Sunday, Brunn said he began to get nervous because of the GBI agents on the property and wrote a note on the back of a McDonalds receipt that read, "Child in trash compactor," and taped it to the trash compactor.

"I never had the idea of killing a child in my life," said Brunn.

When asked if he was mentally stable, Brunn said, "I know right from wrong."

Brunn did say he never actually touched Rivera himself. Police found child porn on his computer.

After reveling the details of the murder, Brunn said, "I would like to apologize for everything I have done. I'm sorry."

A statement from the girl's mother, Joselinne Rivera, was read in court.
'The rest of my life I am going to feel terrible and destroyed because of the harm you did to my daughter," Rivera said in the statement. "I desire this man the worst possible of the world, and that they do to him the worst so he suffers."

Brunn's defense attorney David Cannon addressed reporters after the sentencing.

'He was remorseful. A child's life was lost and he was sentenced. And that's the bottom line ladies and gentlemen. It's over,' Cannon said.
Authorities found the child's body three days after her mother reported her missing from the Canton apartment complex. After getting rid of the body, Brunn said he returned to his apartment and then went out with friends to Walmart before returning home to smoke pot and meth.

Two days after the killing, Brunn began 'freaking out' and wrote a note on the back of a McDonald's receipt saying the girl's body was in the trash compactor and taped it to the bin, he told the judge. When the judge asked why he did that, he responded, 'I was high.'
Police say Brunn snatched the girl as she walked from the playground to her apartment to get sodas for her friends.
Brunn was being held without bond at the Cherokee County jail. His family has said he is innocent. The charges carried the possibility of a death sentence if convicted, but prosecutors had not decided yet whether to seek it.
Brunn has no known criminal past and he cleared background checks by the company that runs the apartment complex where he had been working about a month. Authorities say Brunn had keys to the apartment and the trash compactor bin where Rivera's body was left.

Wow, this must be the fasted a murder case has ever been resolved! This just happened a month ago and the murderer has already pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to life. That's great as it will save a lot of money...except that constituents will be paying for him to sit in jail. At least it's over for the family and they don't have to listen to all the gory details over and over. I'm glad justice has been served for the sweet little girl.

He said he did not have sex with the girl.

Next, Brunn put Jorelys' body in a plastic bag and loaded it into his
maintenance golf cart. He put the body in the trash compactor and
operated the machine. He then went home and hung out with friends.
Later, he again operated the compactor.

Increasingly, Brunn told the court, he grew concerned about what he
had done. So he took a receipt, wrote on the back of it, "She is in the
trash can," and taped it to the compactor. He admitted lying to
investigators who had questioned him about the case. Brunn said he knew
right from wrong.

During his testimony, relatives of the slain girl were visibly upset, crying and shaking.

"I would like to apologize for everything I have done," Brunn told her family in court.

Last week, he was indicted on 13 counts including murder, aggravated
assault, cruelty to children, aggravated child molestation, enticing a
child for indecent purposes, false imprisonment, abandonment of a dead
body, making a false statement and sexual exploitation of children.

According to the indictment, Jorelys was severely beaten and stabbed repeatedly in the face, neck and chest.

Brunn's attorney had said previously he planned to plead not guilty.
Brunn had no known criminal history, authorities have said.

Thank Babyj. I thought he claimed to have made her play with herself but didn't touch her himself. He is a monster regardless. Georgia knows how to treat POSs like him.

Ryan Brunn commits suicide in prison

Ryan Brunn, the apartment groundskeeper who pleaded guilty Wednesday to the molestation and murder of a 7-year-old Canton girl, committed suicide today, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

"I can confirm that Ryan Brunn did commit suicide," said Kristen Stancil, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.

Brunn was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:15 p.m. and was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. The case has been referred to the GBI for further investigation.

Brunn was being housed at the Georgia Diagnostic & Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga. Stancil would not say who found Brunn, or how he died, or whether he was under suicide watch at the time. GBI investigators were on their way to the prison to investigate.

Wow! That didn't take long. I can understand why he did this. He was a coward. He attacked a young child who couldn't defend herself from an adult his size. The police chief of a north Georgia town resigned after a scathing
report found he took a "laid back" approach to the search for a
7-year-old girl whose body was found days later in a trash compactor,
the city's manager said Thursday.

Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance stepped down after the 17-page review
revealed his department of about 50 officers violated several of its own
policies and made many mistakes in the search for Jorelys Rivera, said
city manager Scott Wood.

The girl was reported missing at her apartment complex about 7:30 p.m.
on Dec. 2. Days later, Ryan Brunn, a 20-year-old maintenance worker at
the complex, was charged with her killing. Brunn pleaded guilty Tuesday
to molesting and killing the girl and explained his actions in chilling
detail. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A call to Lance for comment was not immediately returned.

A 17-page review by LaGrange Police Chief Louis Dekmar said Lance and his department made a host of mistakes.

The inquiry said there was little doubt that Rivera was already dead by
the time Canton police received the missing child report. But it said if
another such report were handled in the same manner, police "may indeed
miss an opportunity to save a victim's life."




The review found that the officer who responded to the initial call
treated the case as a routine one that "would be solved in the same
manner as dozens of other such cases that the agency had handled in
2011."

Local officers arriving to search for Rivera failed to activate their
dash-board cameras to record the scene, failed to immediately determine
if any sexual predators lived or worked nearby, and didn't report her
case to a national registry until almost a day after she went missing,
the report said.

The report said Lance didn't arrive at the apartment complex in the town
of about 23,000 until around 10:15 a.m. the next morning — about 17
hours after the child was last seen. When he did arrive, it said he was
talking to several other officers about the "Georgia game" and
eventually turned the TV to a football game.

"Personnel present at the scene frequently characterized the chief's level of concern as 'laid back,'" the report said.

Lance failed to launch a separate criminal investigation or heed advice
to process Rivera's home as a crime scene, the report said.

"There was a clear absence of leadership by the agency head predicated
on the assumption that this was a routine 'runaway or missing child, and
she would turn up,'" the report said. "The police chief failed to act
after he was placed on notice of the incident, in a manner that
galvanized the available resources and communicated a sense of urgency
to his personnel and assisting outside agencies."

Other problems with the investigation surfaced earlier. A Cherokee
County deputy who failed to immediately report seeing drops of blood in
an apartment during the search for the girl was earlier ordered to
undergo additional training. That was not included in the latest report.

Wood, the city manager, said the review should answer questions that were raised about the department's policies and procedures.

"Although sadly the family must still deal with the heartache and loss
of this young child, from a legal perspective the matter has now been
fully concluded," he said in a statement.

Brunn was charged with the Dec. 2 killing of Jorelys Rivera at the apartment complex where she lived. He pleaded guilty to various offenses, including murder and child molestation charges.

Brunn appeared in a Cherokee County courtroom on Tuesday and coldly recounted how he committed the crime. Brunn said after he molested the child, he slashed the girl's throat with a knife and beat her in the head with her own roller skate. Brunn wrapped the girl's body and dumped her in a trash compactor.


"I never had an idea of killing a child in my life ... I was just so terrified and scared. I didn't want her to tell her mom and dad on me and I just ... I cut her," Brunn said.

Thursday, Canton Police Chief Jeff Lance resigned following an investigative report that was released saying his department violated its own policies while searching for the missing Canton girl.

An autopsy is expected to be done on Brunn Friday to determine an official cause of death.

I was giving the chief the benefit of the doubt and thought, why should he be fired if someone below him didn't report blood in the apartment? Then, I read how things were handled and what the chief screwed up. If LE had arrived after a reasonable 5 - 10 minutes (not 2 hours later), they very well may have saved her, IMHO! They could have gone to the staff of the apartment complex and found that the monster was missing if he was working that day or at least have been combing the area and empty apartments.
