Re: IRYANA VAUGHN - 2 yo - Racine WI / Chicago IL alerted
RACINE — Police were working Wednesday to extradite a Racine man
back from Chicago amid an investigation into the fatal stabbing of
a woman with whom he lived and his alleged abduction of their
2-year-old daughter.
An Amber Alert was issued early Wednesday morning after Racine
police were called at about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday to the apartment of
27-year-old Gwynevere L. Wright. A neighbor called 911 to report an
assault had occurred at the upper-level apartment at 900 Racine St.
and Wright’s toddler was missing, Police Sgt. Marty Pavilonis said.
The alert was canceled within hours after Chicago police found
the Racine toddler, Iryana Vaughn, and her 25-year-old father,
Iryin Vaughn. She was found unharmed with him at about 5:47 a.m. at
a residence on Chicago’s South Side in the 9800 block of Yates
Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
“I understand it’s a relative’s residence,” Perez said, adding
they were found inside. “(Iryin Vaughn) is in police custody.”
Perez and Pavilonis said Vaughn is expected to be extradited
back to Wisconsin, but Pavilonis said it is unknown when Vaughn may be returned.
Wright’s death is being investigated as a homicide, Pavilonis
said. Vaughn remains a person-of-interest in Wright’s death, he said.
Rich Chiapete, Racine County deputy district attorney, said it
is unlikely Vaughn could be charged as early as Thursday.
Wright’s 12-year-old son reportedly was in the Racine apartment
during the alleged Tuesday night attack and ran to a neighbor’s for
help after Vaughn left with the boy’s younger sister. Pavilonis —
who declined to comment on the person inside the apartment with
Wright and Iryana during the attack — said only that this person wasn’t harmed.
“We’re still working through that part of the investigation. I
don’t have any details that we can release at this point,” he told The Journal Times.
Wright’s landlord, Larry Zamba, said he was shocked when he
heard about the slaying at about 1 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a
call from the tenant who lives below Wright and her two children.
He said they had lived in the flat for about a year and he
remembered talking with Wright’s son when he went to the apartment to make repairs.
“I tried to be a positive role model. I would say, ‘Hey can you
help me hold the screwdriver,’” Zamba said. “The little girl, she
was really cute. She would always come up with a smile or a wave.
(They were) very nice people. I felt just terrible when I heard
about it. You kind of establish a relationship with them.”
Investigators say Vaughn left the Racine Street apartment with
his daughter shortly before officers were summoned.
Iryana was checked Wednesday morning at Comer Children’s
Hospital at the University of Chicago “as a precautionary measure,”
Perez said. She was in good health and returned to Wisconsin,
Pavilonis said. Her whereabouts were not disclosed.
A woman reached Wednesday evening — at a Chicago number once
listed for Wright — declined comment.
Pavilonis told The Journal Times that police have been called to
the couple’s address several times this year already.
Zamba said he didn’t learn of Wright and Vaughn’s troubled
relationship until August, when Vaughn allegedly ran Wright over
with his Ford Explorer, hospitalizing her for several weeks.
Afterward, Zamba said he asked Vaughn to stay away from the property.
Cook County court records also show that in the past few years,
Vaughn has been convicted of a variety of offenses, including
domestic battery, aggravated assault, resisting a peace officer and retail theft.
“Does it surprise me? No. Am I am shocked by what happened? Yes,” Zamba said.
