GUSTINE – The drowning death of a two-and-a-half year-old child in
the back yard pool of a home in the 900 block of Brentwood Avenue last
Tuesday, March 27, remains under investigation, Gustine police said
earlier this week.
Police Chief Doug Dunford said authorities were still piecing
together information about the series of events which led to the death
of Michael Angelo Tovar.
Dunford said the boy was not breathing when police officers and
emergency medical personnel responded to the 12:38 p.m. 911 call.
Responders began CPR on the child, who was transported to Emanuel
Medical Center in Turlock and transferred to Children’s Hospital Central
California, where he was pronounced dead.
According to Dunford, the child and his father live in the Westley
area, and his father had apparently left Michael in the care of an adult
female friend who lives at the Brentwood address and was not present
when the tragedy occurred.
“We believe that the child wandered outside to the back yard and fell into the pool,” Dunford said Monday.
Investigators believe that Michael was last seen about 20 minutes
before he was discovered in the water and removed from the pool by an
occupant of the home, Dunford stated.
He said authorities had not determined if charges will be sought in the case.
