TERRY LYNN TERSAK 36, ASHVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
MISSING WOMAN ALERT: ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA:
One day in June 2009, Terry Lynn Tersak planned to visit her family in
Raleigh and bring her 5-year-old son along. Tersak told family
she would arrive that night. The family waited and waited, but the
mother and son never arrived. Stephan Tersak, Xander’s father,
eventually took the child to Texas, where they live now. But no one has
heard from Terry Tersak in almost three years. “It’s like she’s dropped
off the face of the Earth,” city police Det. Kevin Taylor said.

The exact day she was last seen is unclear because no one reported her
missing until May 24, 2011 — nearly two years after family last had
contact with her.

Stephan Tersak told police his wife started
using drugs after Xander was diagnosed as autistic. He said she
abandoned them in June 2009 because of the stress of dealing with an
autistic child.

He said he didn’t report her missing because she left on her own accord and he thought she would come back at some point.
Thomas Pendergraft, Terry Tersak’s father, and other family members dispute the husband’s story.
They do not
believe she would abandon her son and think her husband knows more about
her disappearance than he claims. They said Terry and Stephan Tersak
were having marital problems at the time of her disappearance.

Pendergraft, 67, initially didn’t think anything was wrong when his daughter didn’t show up in Raleigh.

He eventually filed the police report after family members urged him to do so.

“She has not contacted me before for several months and then sometimes
she’ll show up,” he said. “But three years is just not right.

“Everyone here in the Raleigh area misses her and keeps asking me if I’ve heard anything.”

Tersak, who is originally from Raleigh, moved to Asheville with her
husband and son in 2008. Taylor said the Tersaks moved here for Xander,
and they enrolled him in an autistic program at Asheville City Schools.

They lived in a couple of places in West Asheville, Taylor said. But, apparently, they did not get to know many people here.

Terry Tersak didn’t work and Stephan Tersak did freelance work with
computers, Taylor said. The husband told police his wife had no friends
here, and her family members weren’t aware of any friends, either.

“In the year and a half that Terry was here in town, I don’t really
know of anybody that knew her,” Taylor said. “Maybe someone will come
forward that I’m not aware of yet. I’d like to think that there’s
somebody here in town that had some sort of dealings with her.”
Pendergraft
last saw his daughter in April 2009. Tersak, 36 and born on April 8, is a
white female with blue eyes. She stands about 5 feet, 1 inch and weighs
about 100 pounds.

Taylor has been working on the case for almost a year now.

The vague timeline for her disappearance hasn’t helped. Stephan Tersak has said he has no idea where his wife is.

“I think he knows more than what he’s telling me,” Taylor said. “He’s
indicated and feels like the family has harassed him all throughout
this. He wasn’t happy when I contacted him to begin with.”

Taylor recently filed a search warrant to review Terry Tersak’s credit
report in an attempt to determine her location, or if she is possibly
the victim of foul play. He found no recent activity on the report. His
other attempts to trace her location have come up empty as well.

“Her driver’s license is expired, and I can’t find any new driver’s
license,” Taylor said. “She’s got no bank account information that I can
find anywhere. According to the Social Security Administration, she’s
not employed anywhere. We’re obviously concerned something is up with
her.”

Police collected DNA samples from Tersak’s father and
brother. Taylor submitted them to the University of North Texas, which
does DNA testing in missing persons cases and tries to match samples
with unidentified remains that may be found somewhere.

Taylor hasn’t heard anything from the university. The family continues to hold out hope Tersak is alive.
“Things look
pretty slim on her behalf, but we keep our hope up,” Pendergraft said.
“I’d really like to find her safe and sound.”

North Carolina mother now missing for 3 years: Part I

06/07/2012
This is the first in a series of articles re-opening the
three-year-old cold case of missing North Carolina wife and mother Terry
Lynn Pendergraft Tersak.

Editor’s Note: The article earlier indicated a May 2009
apartment rental in Texas by the victim’s husband, Stephan Tersak. This
was an error, and has been removed. We apologize to Mr. Tersak for any
confusion it may have caused, and regret the error.

(MPN) The last time anyone other than her husband reported seeing
33-year-old Terry Lynn Pendergraft Tersak was at the family’s home in
Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday, June 1, 2009.

MPN has been asked by the missing woman’s friends and family to
increase awareness in this case. As part of a new investigative aspect
into cold cases, we have begun a series of interviews, research and
fact-finding to help bring Terry Lynn Pendergraft Tersak back to her
friends and family.

Terry called a cousin one evening in June 2009 in Garner, North
Carolina (in the Raleigh area) to say she would visit with her young
son. She never made the 250-mile, five- hour trip east to Garner.

There has been no activity on her credit cards. Her vehicle was left
in Asheville. No bank activity or cell phone use has been indicated, and
there have been no sightings of her since June 2009 by anyone other
than her husband.

At the time of her disappearance, Terry weighed 100 pounds, standing
5’1” tall. The report states she has brown hair, but MPN has determined
it was usually dyed an almost magenta red as in the above photograph. At
the time she went missing, she was living in Asheville, North Carolina,
with her husband and son.
If you have any information about her, please contact Detective Kevin Taylor of the Asheville Police Department at 828-259-5945.
