New Orleans father arrested after infant daughter's death

New Orleans police
arrested the father of a 3-month-old girl who died after being found
face down in a pan with melted ice water earlier this week. Tommy White
Jr., 21, of the 3000 block of Pauger Street, is accused of negligent homicide, records show.

to going to sleep, White placed a pan containing a bag of ice next to
his bed so he could have something cold to drink in the event he needed
it, according to an investigation. He and his infant daughter Tariah
went to sleep, and about 7 a.m. Tuesday, the father woke to discover his
child with her face in the pan, which had filled with water when the
ice in the bag melted.


Tariah was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.


Autopsy results are pending, according to John Gagliano, the New
Orleans coroner's chief investigator. Gagliano explained that his office
is awaiting further testing to determine whether the child died from
drowning, hypothermia or some other cause.


Nonetheless, records said, the NOPD concluded White was negligent in
his care for his daughter "based on the information obtained" and booked
him.


Negligent homicide involving a victim younger than 10 is punishable
by between two and five years in prison upon conviction. White's bond in
the case was set at $25,000, and he remained in jail Thursday.

they really should raise the punishment for negligent homicide of a child. these ppl need to b punished severely.
