Mother charged in toddler's meth overdose death

SPANAWAY, Wash. — Quick Facts:
○ Toddler died from acute methamphetamine poisoning
○ Child ingested enough to kill an adult
○ Mother has history of smoking meth around children
○ Alyia Iverson charged with manslaughter
The mother of a toddler who ingested methamphetamine in her Spanaway home and died was charged with manslaughter Tuesday.
Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said that on Dec. 6, 2012, several people were doing drugs inside the home of 26-year-old Alyia Iverson, where she lived with her 2-year-old son, Nathan Iverson.
According to charging documents, Iverson saw her son drink water from her marijuana bong, but she didn’t call 911. Instead, she swaddled him tightly in a blanket and placed him on the bed at 1 a.m.
Iverson said this irritated the boy, and he was “pissing and moaning,” so she “cleaned up the room enough that he had his own spot on the floor,” according to documents.
At 3 a.m., she discovered he was not breathing. When paramedics arrived, the boy had no pulse and he was taken to the hospital. The emergency room doctor noted that the victim’s body was stiff even though he had a temperature of 104 degrees. The doctor said the boy’s pupils were fixed and dilated, he had multiple bruises, and his feet, fingers and nails were extremely dirty.
He was pronounced dead shortly after.
According to the medical examiner, the toddler died from acute methamphetamine poisoning. Toxicology reports showed that he ingested THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and enough methamphetamine to kill an adult. The medical examiner said the toddler would have had a fever, convulsions and seizures before dying.
Witnesses said Iverson has history of smoking meth in her children’s presence, the house was dirty, and the children were not properly fed and were physically abused. Iverson’s cousin told authorities that she brought the victim to her home to care for him and he began to drink water from her dog’s bowl.
The boy and his sister were taken from Iverson’s home in 2011, but she was able to regain custody.
