UPDATE: Police are continuing to follow up on leads in the case of a missing Temperance teenager.
Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone addressed the media at Bedford Township Hall this morning.
“This is an active investigation and officers are following up on active leads,” the sheriff said.
About 10 p.m. Thursday, Hayley Marie Turner, 18, of Temperance told her family she was going to rent movies from the Family Video at Lewis Ave. and Dean Rd.
While driving home, Ms. Turner was on the phone with a friend. She told the friend she was at the intersection of Dean and Crabb Rds. when she noticed a man in a ditch.
“Hayley told her friend she was going to get out of the car to check on him,” the sheriff said.
The sheriff said Ms. Turner got out of her car and then told her friend the man had a gun.
At that time, the friend called Ms. Turner’s family and her father went to the area and found his daughter’s car unoccupied.
About 9:30 a.m. today, the sheriff said a citizen called to report seeing a man and woman walking about 4 a.m. near the Erie Post 3925, Veterans of Foreign Wars, hall at 1944 E. Erie Rd., Erie.
The caller said the man was 18 to 24 wearing khaki shorts and a blue shirt. The woman appeared to be about 18 and her clothing matched the description of what Ms. Turner was last wearing. Police said she was wearing an orange T-shirt and black yoga pants.
Christy Turner pleaded for her daughter to call.
“Hayley, please call. Call anybody,” she said. “We miss you. We want you home."
Sheriff Malone said K-9 units from the sheriff's office and Michigan State Police along with the sheriff's helicopter, Raptor, spent several hours Thursday night looking for Ms. Turner.
The K-9 units and Raptor were deployed again this morning to search.
Ms. Turner, a recent graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, is white, about 5 feet tall and weighs about 130 pounds. She has brown eyes and long brown hair just below the shoulders.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office detective bureau at 240-7530 or 240-7700.

MISSING TEEN HAYLEY TURNER FOUND, MAY BE CHARGED WITH FAKING HER OWN ABDUCTION
August 12, 2014 by Terri Osborne
The alleged abduction of 18-year-old Hayley Turner of Michigan may not have been what family members, searchers, and police were initially led to believe. Turner alleged that she had been abducted by a man with a gun last Thursday evening while coming home from a local video store shortly after 10:00 p.m. According to Turner’s story, while she was also talking to a friend on her phone, she saw a man lying in a ditch. She told her friend she was going to check it out, but within moments told the friend that the man had a gun. The phone call ended right after that gut-wrenching moment.
According to police, that as-yet unnamed friend called Turner’s father, and he drove to the scene. Police state that he found his daughter’s car unoccupied, but with the motor running. Police were quickly called in, and the search was underway. Using police helicopters and search dogs, the department combed the area in search of Turner. Turner later told police that at one point a hood was shoved over her face, and she was taken to a house, where another man waited. She claimed one of them men was as tall as the door, which began setting off red flags for the investigating officers. When she told them that they had mysteriously given her a puppy as well, that was one of the final straws. How could she have jumped fences from yard to yard after getting out of the car as she’d claimed while carrying a puppy?
Around 2:30 p.m. the next day, there is a report of a driver in Ecorse, MI saw a girl jump from a slowly moving vehicle. That vehicle then quickly fled the scene. The driver pulled aside and checked on the girl, who had worked her way to her feet and was walking along the road. That girl was Hayley Turner. And there were no reports of any puppy.
Police interrogated Turner further, and she did finally admit to the sheriff’s office that the story was not true. However, she is also not telling police what actually happened during the approximately 16 hours she was missing. The sheriff’s office is contemplating felony false report charges and would like to recover the monies spent on the search effort.
