A former Attleboro police sergeant pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to a charge of attempting to receive child pornography after he posted an ad asking people to “perv on your daughter” and send him photographs of their child.

Richard F. Woodhead, 54, appeared in US District Court in Providence. Investigators in Rhode Island assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force discovered the ads and then launched an undercover investigation where a detective posed as the guardian of a child.

“During these [tape-recorded] conversations, Woodhead requested a photograph of the child and described in explicit terms the types of sexual relations he wanted to have with the child,’’ federal prosecutors said in a statement.

Investigators searched Woodhead’s home in Attleboro, finding a “secret compartment” and electronic storage devices with images of child pornography.

Woodhead had posted the ad numerous times between September and January, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty to a single count of attempting to receive child pornography and will be sentenced Nov. 3, federal prosecutors said.

Woodhead was a 32-year member of the Attleboro force.
