Re: LINDSEY J BAUM - 10 yo (2009) - McCleary WA
Authorities have conducted two new searches related to the disappearance
of Lindsey Baum, who was 10 years old when she
vanished June 26, 2009, while walking home from a friend's
house in McCleary, Wash.
Investigators with the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office and the FBI
grew suspicious after they found inconsistencies in information
provided a year ago by a 47-year-old man, whose name they will not
release.
Some of the man's account failed to match other information the
investigators had obtained independently, according to Grays Harbor Undersherriff
Rick Scott.
"We found that what we were being told and what we now believed to be
true were two different things," Scott said. "Those inconsistencies gave
birth to some concerns that we needed to explore further."
The Sheriff's Office obtained search warrants and carried out searches
on the man's residence and a shared storage unit Tuesday, seizing some
items and speaking to the man at length.
Investigators planned to search his car this morning.
Scott downplayed the new search, emphasizing that this man was one of
many persons of interest in the case and has not become a suspect.
"A lot of what we were concerned about has been somewhat explained,"
Scott said.
"We found nothing yesterday that clearly links him to Lindsey's disappearance.
"We've looked at over 4,000 leads so far," Scott said. "Even if it
eliminates someone from further scrutiny, it's a step in the right
direction."
Investigators will submit the items they seized from the man's residence
and storage unit for forensic testing, but Scott said it may be some
time before they learn anything. It has been more than a year since Lindsey disappeared on the 10-minute
walk from a friend's house. Witnesses spotted her shortly after 9:30
p.m. on that day last June, but when she did not return home by 10, her mother, Melissa, went to look for her. When
Lindsey did not turn up, her mother notified police within the hour.
Lindsey would have celebrated her 12th birthday a week ago, on July 7.
Even though a year has passed, Scott still holds hope his office can
find Lindsey and "bring her home.
"You have to remain optimistic," he said."It's a painstakingly slow
process, but we are making progress."

McCLEARY, Wash. - State prison work crews have cleared a large patch of
overgrown land in McCleary where searchers have been looking for a girl
since June of last year.
Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott said removal of the brush gave investigators a closer look at the
area. A number of items were collected and sent to a lab for examination as possible evidence.
Scott says none of the items are sending
up "red flags" in the disappearnce of Lindsey Baum, but he says it's
worth the closer look.
Lindsey vanished while walking home from a friend's house at dusk on June 26, 2009. She was 10 years old at the
time of her disappearance.
No arrests have been made and police have never identified a suspect in connection with the case.
Investigators have released several video clips to the public hoping to generate new tips and are offering a
$30,000 reward for information in the case.
Hundreds of people also have been interviewed as part of the investigation and searchers
have combed woods, fields and properties all around the small mill town where she lived.

Vanished: Lindsey Baum Case Heartbreaking for Family, Frustrating for Police
Authorities Hoping Surveillance Video Will Bring Leads on Case of 10-Year-Old Who Disappeared Blocks From Home
After thousands of tips and just as many dashed hopes, police in Washington state are using a year-old surveillance video to try to track down anyone who may have information about the disappearance of 10-year-old Lindsey Baum.
The frustrating case has hit one dead-end after another, but authorities say they're waiting for that one piece of information that will lead to an answer.
"That piece of information that someone may have that to them is completely meaningless, that's going to be the one little nugget that will unravel this mystery," said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott.
The surveillance video, recently released to the public, shows two men -- one in a plaid shirt, another with a young boy -- that the police are hoping to talk to. They were at the Shell gas station around the time that Lindsey vanished on her way home from a friend's house in June 2009.
It was a mile-and-a-half-long route she'd taken nearly every day. A woman who drove her car down the street made eye contact with Lindsey just a few blocks from the little girl's McCleary home. But she never made it.
"I know somebody took her," Lindsey's mother, Melissa Baum, said. "I believe it was somebody she knew or thought she could trust. Meaning somebody she would see as safe."
Baum said she has walked the route her daughter took that night hundreds of times.
"I want to feel her," she said.
"To the person who took my daughter -- if they're a parent and they have any idea what a parents love feels like," Baum said, crying, "I just have to appeal to their heart and to their morals and stop this."
Lindsey's disappearance has hit many hard in this tiny town. Her best friend Michaela Kampen, whose house Lindsey had visited the night she vanished, said she watched her friend leave that night, just like she had dozens of times before.
"She said she has to go and I got up and opened the door for her and I watched her walk past that pole," she said, indicated a spot near her house. "That was the last time I saw her."
No Arrests or Sign of Lindsey Baum After More Than 4,000 Tips, 30 Persons of Interest
Michaela, who described her best friend as "very sweet" with a "loud voice," said she sometimes thinks she sees Lindsey in the street, but it's never her.
"I see someone and they look like a completely different person. They don't look the same," she said, blinking back tears. "They look exactly like Lindsey and then I blink and she's not there anymore."
More than 100 law enforcement agents have hunted for Lindsey with dogs, horses and helicopters. Specialized search teams have been called in and neighbors have been questioned, some of them multiple times.
Over the summer, police and the FBI took a closer look at a 47-year-old man they said had numerous inconsistencies in his story. In July, they searched his car, his home and a storage unit, taking with them several items. Though the man, whose name police declined to release, was added to the list of 30 persons of interest, there still has been no arrest.
"I am never going to stop and I'm not going to let this drop. Ever," Baum said. "And when my time's over, I'll haunt them from my grave."

Drama Heats Up Over Firefighters Refusal to Hand Out Missing Girl Flyers During Separate Charity Event
Thu., Dec. 16 2010 @ 10:35AM
Lindsay Baum, an 11-year-old from McCleary, went missing
18 months ago on her way home from a friend's house. Her mother has
been blanketing the town with flyers and searching everywhere for a clue
of where she might be ever since. But when she asked the McCleary Fire
Department to help her hand out flyers during an upcoming charity event
they put on that benefits a different family, the firefighters said
"sorry, can't do it." Now folks is pissed.
The event in question is called "Santa Through Town," and it includes
a parade, decorated fire engines and lots of candy canes being handed
out, with money being raised to benefit a single sponsored poor family.
Baum wanted the candy canes that the firefighters hand out to be wrapped in rolled up flyers with Lindsay's picture on it.
The
firefighters rationale for refusing to do such a thing is that it would
take away focus from the family that they are sponsoring. They say
they'll gladly hand out info and pictures some other time.
The story,
reported Wednesday by KING 5 has led to quite a battle between those
who agree with the firefighters and those that think the Baum family is
in the right. Both sides have good arguments, but only one side has the
better one.
First off, it would be impossible to fault Baum for wanting the
firefighters to hand out flyers. Most mothers would likely be asking the
entire city worker staff to hand them out 24 hours a day.
And one can also understand why the firefighters wouldn't want to be
perceived as snubbing one poor family by making their event about
another grieving family as well. But that perception would likely be
sparse at most. And unless the slightly modified candy canes would
somehow hinder the fund raising abilities of McCleary's bravest, it
seems impossible that the needy family being benefited by the parade
would be any worse for it.
Besides, if the firefighters really don't want to get involved with
the Lindsay Baum search on that particular day, they can just let the
girl's mom and a couple of her friends or family hitch a ride on the
fire truck and hand out their own flyers. Problem solved.

Kiwi said that this is only 50 miles from Karli Gaston, and wondered if the two might be connected through a common pervert.
LE has been notified and we can only wait and see.
Stranger abductions are relatively rare, another reason for Kiwi's thoughts.
Would be good if we could see some closure on this case.

Missing girl's mom: 'Not giving up till we find her'
Published: Jun 26, 2011 at 7:45 PM PDT
Melissa Baum wipes away a tear as she talks
about her missing daughter, Lindsey.
McCLEARY, Wash. - The mother
of a young girl who vanished without a trace two years ago on Sunday
says she sometimes dreams about her daughter coming home.
"Different scenarios, but she's home, and I can hold her," says Melissa
Baum, mother of missing Lindsey Baum, through her heartache and tears.
"I look forward to her coming home," Melissa says.
"I still believe she's out there - not giving up till we find her."
Lindsey Baum vanished while walking home from a friend's house on June
26, 2009, in the small town of McCleary in Grays Harbor County. It was
only a 10-minute walk from one house to the other, but Lindsey was never seen again.
The search for her continues. In the 730 days since then, Lindsey's mom
has seen her life turned upside down. But she has not lost hope that her
daughter will one day return.
"Two years ago, I was a single mom, working mom, raising two kids and
that's not the case anymore," says Melissa. "The only thing that hasn't
changed is my determination to find Lindsey and the love that I have for her."
Today, there's yet to be any trace of Lindsey. Melissa says it's not just her daughter who's missing, it's her best friend.
"We did everything together," she says.
Melissa doesn't live in McCleary anymore. But on Sunday she and some
friends and family members met at the town's lone park, marking the
somber day her daughter disappeared.
The visit brings mixed feelings, but it helped her to remind others to keep looking for Lindsey.
A donor recently added another $5,000 to the reward for finding Lindsey - making it $35,000 for anyone who knows where she is.
And in just a couple of weeks, her family and friends invite everyone to
come back to the park in McCleary - to celebrate what will be Lindsey's 13th birthday.

It's too long for nothing to have shown up. Like Brittanee Drexel, I have a feeling that when all is said and done we are going to find another case of the "Garrido" syndrome here.
She was spirited away by some less than stable pedo who has kept her prisoner and brainwashed her into some sort of servitude.
LE should concentrate on a 50-75 mile radius with those individuals who may already have had some brushes with arrest or investigation in the past. Has anyone from her school left employ with haste since this happened?
It's just mind-boggling that nothing has come of this investigation yet.
Another reason why we must, despite recent events, continue our quest for justice.

Police search jewelry store, man's home in connection with Lindsey Baum case
Updated: 6:10 pm PDT October 18, 2011
McCLEARY, Washington -- Police and federal agents searched two locations in McClearly on Tuesday in connection with missing child Lindsey Baum.
KIRO 7 South Sound Bureau Chief Richard Thompson first reported the news of the searches on his Twitter feed.
Detectives from the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office along with agents from the FBI, officers from the Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and King County Sheriff's Office served search warrants at a jewelry store and the home of a man who lives in town.
The man spoke with Thompson and said he has no alibi for the time of Baum's disappearance, so police think he had something to do with it. The man said he didn't and his friends agree.
"I don't think he had anything to do with it," said David Belcher. "I think they are grasping at straws myself, but we'll see."
There were no arrests, and police said they were just following leads and working their way through evidence.
Baum disappeared while she was walking home in McCleary more than two years ago. She was 10 years old at the time.
"I hope they find something," said Haley Messenger. "It's been too long without answers."
"My hope is like everyone else's, that she would come home safe and sound, but two years? There's hope and there's reality," Jan Mullin said.

Searchers are looking in woods north of McCleary Tuesday and Wednesday in the
Lindsey Baum case. Steve Shumate with the Grays Harbor sheriff's office
tells KBKW the FBI and Washington State Patrol are assisting in the
search of an area cleared by state prison work crews. Shumate say
investigators have no new leads in the case, they are merely taking
advantage of the work crews to perform a more thorough search in the
area. Lindsey was 10 years old when she vanished June 26, 2009, while
walking home from a friend's house.

LIndsey Baum: Video of person of interest released by police
Grays Harbor sheriff's office have located two women that were seen
talking to a person of interest in the case of missing Lindsay Baum.
Authorities did not release the video to the public before this, but decided to do so in order to find the women.
The man that is seen in the video says he was no where near McCleary,
and the video shows he was. In the video, I think he is saying something
like hello to the woman that walks up next to him, and then something
else, like possibly have a nice day, when he left. What do you think he
is saying? It also looks like he bought a bag of chips and maybe a
drink, but he seems to be carrying a police scanner, and he has fire on
the back of his shirt.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -
Investigators identified a local jewelry store owner Thursday as a
person of interest in the June 2009 disappearance of Lindsey Baum - but
the store owner himself denies having anything to do with it.
Tim Hartman, owner of Hartman's Jewelry and Repair in McCleary, admits
he "unintentionally" gave false information to authorities about his
whereabouts on the night Lindsey vanished. But he maintains his
innocence, saying he knows nothing about what happened to the girl and
actually helped in the search for her.
The identification of Hartman as a person of interest in the case
coincided with the release Thursday of a video from a convenience store
in the area that was recorded the evening Lindsey vanished while walking
home from a friend's house.
The video shows Hartman making a purchase in the store at about the same
time Lindsey vanished, around 9:15 p.m. on June 26, 2009. Hartman had
previously told investigators he wasn't in McCleary at that time.
Also seen in the video are two women, one of whom can be seen speaking
briefly with Hartman. Investigators want to interview the women, and
asked for the public's help in identifying them.
Within hours of the video's release, the women were identified as two
sisters living in McCleary, and detectives said they were planning to
interview them.
Hartman's car, home and his shop were searched in October as part of the investigation into Lindsey's disappearance.
The shop, Hartman's Jewelry and Repair on Fourth Street, is on the route
that Lindsey would have taken to get back home on the night she disappeared.
Hartman earlier told police he was not in the McCleary area at the time
of Lindsey's disappearance - but the newly released video shows that he actually was there.
In an interview on Thursday, Hartman told KOMO News that he had nothing to do with Lindsey's disappearance.
He admitted he initially told police he was not at the convenience
store, but said he honestly doesn't remember being there at the time in question.
He says he showed investigators a "certificate" showing that he had been
in a class in Belfair until 9 p.m. on June 26 and couldn't have made it
to McCleary by 9:15 p.m. But he says FBI investigators then determined
that the class actually had ended at 8:15 p.m.
"I still don't remember being here the night Lindsey disappeared, but
they have me at Mike's (Market) at 21:15 on their camera, 'cause I
looked at the picture, and I said, 'Yeah, that is me.' But I still don't remember being here at that time."
Hartman tells KOMO News he made an ambulance run later in the evening of
June 26, and when he returned to McCleary, the search for Lindsey already was under way.
He says Chief George Crumb of the McCleary Police Department then asked
him to join in the search, which he did. But Chief Crumb now says he
doesn't remember asking him to take part, Hartman says.
After joining in the search for a while, Hartman says he returned home
but couldn't sleep, so he went out searching again. It was then, at
about 1 a.m., that he says he ran into Lindsey's mother, and says he
drove her to a local creek where Lindsey sometimes went to play, in hopes they would find her there.
He says he searched there, and he left some markers to show where he had searched, but they were gone the next day.
"I don't have a clue what's going on," he told KOMO News. "They got to
do what they got to do. ... They're wasting a lot of money investigating me."
Hartman says the search of his home and business has "done damage to my reputation."
"Don't accuse me of something I didn't do," he says. "All I can do is
tell them what I know, which is nothing about the little girl."
Hartman also says he was interrogated by police for about eight hours in January, and has taken two polygraph tests.
He says he initially was told that he passed the first test, but later
was told that he had failed it. So he took a second test, which investigators told him was "inconclusive."
Lindsey Baum was 10 years old when she disappeared. A $35,000 reward has been offered in the case.
At the time of her disappearance, Lindsey was 4-foot-9, 80 pounds, with
brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a light blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans.

I found this 2009 post at WS. Interesting I thought!!!!
Right after snapping this photo i was approached by 'Mark the (apparent) local drunk. He was quite intoxicated & slurry.
He asked what i was doing and i told him.
He was a bit 'chatty' and slurred out a few things.
Mark portrayed 'Peter' (iirc) (the owner or worker of the Jewelry shop ^, on Maple) as not having a 'great opinion of Lindsey &/or the Baum family. "~That girl was up to 'things'" (Lindsey)
Mark also didn't have such a great opinion. Mark mentioned being aware
Lindsey was on the internet. He generally & repeatedly came off
disliking Lindsey &/or the family.
Mark added one other thing. Mark said he believes 'Eric' (who lives
(according to Marks pointing) in the North-Eastern part of town)
'probably did it' (as in abducting Lindsey) Mark said Eric had conversed
with him (@ an unknown time) about 'young girls.
The conversation was strange.. but you couldn't expect much else. At one
point he stopped talking almost like he'd just realized he's telling
all this to a stranger & briefly thought twice.
If nothing else i'd suggest an interview with persons from this ^ Jewelry shop.
