Police Say Toddler Smothered In Cabot
CABOT, Vt. -- Vermont State Police say a 15-month-old Vermont toddler was smothered to death.
In a statement released Thursday morning, police said they found the body of the little boy at a Main Street home in Cabot Dec. 21. The victim, identified as Ryah Douglas, was reported to police to be unresponsive in his crib at noon that afternoon.
Police said they interviewed several witnesses, including the little boy's mother Kirsten Hammood and her boyfriend Patrick Stacey, who both reported that they were at the Main Street residence when the little boy's body was found.
"The mother and the boyfriend were the only two people in the house that we're aware of, so that's the focus," Vermont state Police Capt. David Covell said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. ""The medical examiner determined that this was a homicide, that this was not an accident," he said.
The victim's body was brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and an autopsy was performed. Police have since considered the death suspicious and continued to investigate the case as further tests were conducted by the medical examiner's office.
On Tuesday, the medical examiner's office concluded the death was due to smothering and the manner of death was homicide.
No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate the case.
Anyone with information about the case should contact Vermont State Police at 802-229-9191 or call Crime Stoppers at 802-476-9999.
