MARIAH RITTER - 3 yo (2010) - San Juan County TX includes also CA, AZ, & NM

Sheriff's officials in San Juan County say a 3-year-old girl who rode
for hours in the back of a pickup with a camper shell is recovering from hypothermia.
Sheriff's Lt. Tyler Truby says deputies were called after the child
was found unresponsive in a makeshift bed. The truck had arrived at a
home in northwest New Mexico following a four-hour ride from Holbrook, Ariz.
Truby says the child was taken to the University of New Mexico
Hospital. She was in serious condition late Friday.
Truby says the girl was with her father's girlfriend on a trip from
California to San Juan County. He says the girlfriend told deputies the
child was tired, so she made up a bed in the pickup bed during a stop in
Holbrook and put her to sleep.
An investigation has been launched, but Truby says deputies are
uncertain if criminal charges will be filed.

FARMINGTON, N.M. (KREZ) - Police found a 3-year-old girl just north of Farmington, N.M. who was unresponsive. Turns out the little girl was riding in the camper shell in the bed of a pickup truck during a road trip and got so cold she contracted hypothermia.
Thursday night, Mariah Ritter, 3, went with her father's girlfriend in Bakersfield, California and drove straight to Holbrook, Arizona when the girlfriend stopped for fuel at about 5:30 a.m. Ritter was tired and wanted to lie down to sleep. since the pickup truck had a camper shell, the girlfriend decided to make a bed for Ritter in the back of the pickup using comforters and blankets for cushioning. Ritter went to sleep in the camper and the girlfriend drove further. The girlfriend would periodically check on Ritter by opening a sliding rear window.
The girlfriend arrived at the family home on County Road 1788 north of Farmington. When Ritter's father went to get her from the pickup, he noticed she was pale and unresponsive. He called an ambulance immediately.
It is not known at this time whether criminal charges will be filed.
