"Baby Doe" - 5 Months - Pontiac MI
Pontiac police say suffocation is suspected in the death of a 5-month-old baby found at the edge of a bed and pinned against the wall.
Sgt. Steve Troy says the child was found by the grandmother about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the family's home about 20 miles northwest of Detroit.
Investigators say the 18-year-old mother and her child were sleeping together after both went to bed about 11 p.m. Monday. Troy said the woman left the home between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday to visit a friend's house.
Troy said the grandmother found the child unresponsive and noticed the mother was gone.
An autopsy is pending by the Oakland County medical examiner.
Prosecutor's will review the case for possible neglect charges.

A teenage mother is accused of leaving her infant daughter alone. That baby is now dead. “She’s probably going through a living hell right now,” said family friend Earl Brown. Friends are reaching out to a family that must be dealing with unspeakable grief. A five-month-old was found dead in a Pontiac home. “From the grandmother’s standpoint, she was getting ready for work at about 6:00 a.m., the grandmother was, and at about 6:15, she went in to check on her daughter and her grand-baby. She didn’t see her daughter, but did observe her grand-baby face down in between the mattress and the wall,” said Pontiac Police Sgt. Kevin Braddock. It was too late. The child had already suffocated. Pontiac Police say the baby was in bed with her 18-year-old mother until she decided to leave. “At about four in the morning, she decided that she couldn’t sleep and wanted to leave the household to go visit a friend, and she left the baby in the bed unattended,” Braddock said. Police say the mother could have put the infant in a nearby crib, but didn’t do that. Now, the baby’s life is over, but the questions are just beginning. “It was an unfortunate thing, but hopefully everyone can learn from this,” said Braddock. “You don’t leave (any) kid (alone) at that age. I’ll just say that,” Brown said. Pontiac Police say that once they finish up their investigation that information will be handed over to the prosecutor. The prosecutor will be the one who determines whether or not charges will be filed.
