Authorities are mulling new charges against the father of a 6-year-old girl who died from burns in a fire in a backyard fire pit in Lenox Township, police said this morning.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said Majd Mohammad Al-Shara remains held in the Macomb County Jail, unable to post $10,000 bond. He was already charged with second-degree child abuse, a felony, in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore, but that charge could be elevated by prosecutors to a homicide-related offense, Hackel said.
“We’re forwarding the information to the prosecutor’s office,” Hackel said.
The girl, Aliaa Al-Shara, died Wednesday. The sheriff’s department said Al-Shara and his daughter were sitting around a metal fire pit around 6:45 p.m. Sunday as the father tried to start a fire at the home on Deerwood. He added an accelerant to get the fire going, and a resulting explosion caught the girl’s clothing on fire.

A 6-year-old girl who was badly burned in a fire pit in northern Macomb County on Sunday was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon after relatives took her off of a life-support ventilator, according to police.
As a result, criminal charges filed against the girl’s father likely will be elevated, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said late Wednesday.
“We’ve already been discussing upping the charges and we will present our information to the Macomb County Prosecutor (today), Hackel said.
Majd Mohammad Al-Shara, 40, was arraigned earlier this week on charges of second-degree child abuse, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison upon conviction.
The sheriff said his office will recommend a charge of some degree of homicide, possibly negligent homicide, which could land the suspect in prison for up to 15 years.
Al-Shara is being held in Macomb County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond. If a more serious charge is authorized against him, it’s likely the bond will also go up.
According to police, the little girl and her father were sitting around a campfire outside of their home on Deerwood Street in the Quail Run mobile home park when the incident occurred.
Al-Shara allegedly used a mix of gasoline and some other chemical – investigators weren’t sure what the second liquid was on Wednesday – to fuel the fire.
It appears the liquid splashed onto the youngster, who was sitting a few feet away from the fire pit. The dangerous mix of chemicals caused an explosion that sent flames leaping out to both the girl and the father.
As the girl began screaming and her father fought to assist her, a number of neighbors rushed over to help, using clothing, blankets, and a chair cushion to douse the fire as Lenox Township fire crews were on their way.
The father, who suffered less serious burns, was rushed to a hospital where he was treated and released.
The girl, whose name was not released, suffered burns to 90 to 100 percent of her body. She was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where her family on Wednesday took the painful step of removing her from a life-support system.
“This is just an incredibly sad story,” Hackel said.

Attorneys in fire pit case to review test results

A pretrial was adjourned Tuesday in Macomb County Circuit Court for a man charged in the death of his daughter in a fire pit incident so that attorneys can review test results. His attorney said the results indicate the incident was an accident that could have been the fault of a gas can.
The report was good news to Richard Graving, attorney for Majd Mohammad Al-Shara, 41, who is charged with second-degree child abuse in the death of his 6-year-old daughter, Aliaa. Al-Shara was trying to stoke a backyard fire pit with gasoline when flames shot out and burned Aliaa on Sept. 19.
The U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement also placed a hold on Al-Shara, a Jordanian citizen in the U.S. illegally for nearly 10 years. He remains in the county jail.

A Jordanian man sentenced to one year's
probation for starting a backyard fire that killed his 6-year-old
daughter in suburban Detroit has been deported.
Defense lawyer Richard
Graving told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens that Majd Al-Shara
boarded an airplane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus on
Tuesday, and was bound for Jordan.

Graving has said Al-Shara didn't have a valid visa to be in the U.S.

Al-Shara pleaded guilty to
fourth-degree child abuse for starting the Sept. 19, 2010, fire that
killed his daughter Aliaa at their home in Macomb County's Lenox
Township.

He says he was trying to
stoke a fire in a backyard fire pit with fuel when flames shot out and
burned Aliaa. Al-Shara also was burned.
