GREY VIGIL - Days old - Los Alamos NM
Los Alamos police officers were called by hospital officials on Tuesday to report a case of possible child abuse. Officers were informed that a child had been born Friday at his mother’s residence. The 25-year-old mother, Katrina Vigil, lived at the residence with her parents. It appears that Vigil hid the existence of the child from her parents until it was discovered in a closet on Monday by Vigil’s mother. Vigil’s mother made an appointment at the Los Alamos Medical Center for doctors to see the child. According to doctors, the baby was in "severe medical distress” upon arrival at the hospital. The child was air lifted to UNMH for serious medical conditions. He is currently listed as stable. A child abuse investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been filed at this time. The Los Alamos Police Department will remain in contact with the DA’s office to file future charges, if decided on.

A Los Alamos woman is under investigation after leaving her newborn baby in a closet for her mother to discover. This same woman was investigated in 2003 for leaving another newborn in a park. Los Alamos police were contacted by hospital officials Tuesday and informed that a baby boy born Friday at his mother 's residence was left in a closet only to be discovered three days later by the woman's mother. Authorities say she hid her pregnancy from her parents. This is not the first time she had managed to keep a pregnancy from her parents and sadly its is not the first time she has abandoned her newborn child. Court documents reveal that in 2003 the woman, alone in her dorm room at Eastern New Mexico University, gave birth to a baby boy. She testified that she did not know about the 2003 pregnancy until two months prior to the boy's birth. While she concealed the pregnancy from her parents she did tell the boy's father and he agreed to drop out of school in order to care for the child. Because she didn’t want the young man to drop out of school she later told him that she had miscarried. The day after giving birth, the woman took the newborn baby to a park and pretended she had found the child, according to court documents. From there, the state's Children, Youth and Families Department took custody of the boy. She eventually confessed to police that the child was hers and told the boy 's father. Soon after she agreed to allow a Portales Hospital nurse to adopt the baby boy. Later the mother and the boys’ father attempted, unsuccessfully, to overturn the adoption. It wasn’t until that attempt that the woman's parents learned of this first pregnancy. After discovering the most recent newborn baby boy in the closet the woman's mother took the baby to Los Alamos Medical Center for medical attention. Doctors say the child was in “severe medical distress” upon arrival. He was airlifted to UNMH for serious medical condition and is currently listed as stable. While the woman is in custody and under investigation authorities have not yet filed charges.

Re: GREY VIGIL - Days old - Los Alamos NM
A newborn baby whose mother hid him in a closet after giving birth to him secretly has died, New Mexico police said. Grey Vigil, born Sept. 24 in Los Alamos, died in a hospice Monday night, authorities reported. The boy's grandmother found him three days after his secret birth to Katrina Vigil, 25. But the family waited a day before bringing Grey to Los Alamos Medical Center, Los Alamos Police Capt. Randy Foster said. Doctors found the baby in severe distress and he was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Police and prosecutors are continuing the investigation. An autopsy was performed Tuesday in Albuquerque, but the findings have not been announced. This was the second time Vigil has hidden a pregnancy. Her first child, born in a dorm room at Eastern New Mexico University in 2003, survived and was later adopted. Vigil has not been criminally charged in either case. Foster said police have no sign of who the boy's father is or if he even knew Vigil was pregnant.

SANTA FE – Child abuse charges were dismissed against a Los Alamos
family accused of acting negligently in the death of a 10-day-old boy
last year.
Katrina Vigil gave birth to her son, Grey, at home, where she lived
with her parents. All the adults faced felony charges heading into a
preliminary hearing that began Tuesday. But on the second day of
testimony, a judge tossed out their cases.
“It doesn’t surprise me,” said Robert Vigil, Katrina’s father, who,
with his wife, Holly, also faced charges. “I didn’t think the state had
enough evidence to prove what was being charged against any of us.”
Katrina Vigil, 26, wept and hugged supporters after state District Judge Michael Vigil dismissed the case.
The judge said the baby’s life would have ended the same regardless of the family’s actions.
Katrina Vigil – who apparently never knew she was pregnant – gave
birth to Grey in the basement of her parents’ home in September 2010.
She kept the baby hidden from her family for an entire weekend, until
Holly Vigil found the infant wrapped in a sleeping bag on her daughter’s
bed the next Monday.
The family made an appointment to see a Los Alamos pediatrician the
next day, and the infant was then taken to University of New Mexico
Hospital in Albuquerque. Grey died days later at a hospice.
The infant was born with a rare brain malformation, which usually
leads to death, and an Office of the Medical Investigator autopsy report
ruled that he died from natural causes.
But prosecutors argued that Katrina, Robert and Holly Vigil all acted
negligently. Assistant District Attorney Judith Reed, who prosecuted
the case with co-counsel Stephanie Pauly, said that Katrina Vigil should
have sought immediate medical attention after the birth. The boy was
jaundiced and suffered from other health problems, according to
prosecutors and doctors who testified.
Prosecutors also said the mother abandoned her baby for five hours
the day after his birth during a trip to Santa Fe, and they argued that
Robert and Holly Vigil didn’t react with a sense of urgency in getting
the child medical attention after discovering him.
Also, in 2003, Katrina Vigil hid a previous pregnancy from the father
and told him that she had suffered a miscarriage. In fact, she gave
birth and “took the baby to a park and pretended that she found” the
child there, according to court records from that case.
That child was adopted by a nurse, and Katrina Vigil was not charged in that case.
